Ariën van Tuijl was born in Felda as the youngest of four children, but only lived in the city until he was five years old. His father was a diplomat for the Kingdom of Forrintia and because of that he grew up in Wiwaxmouthe, Nerschach and Nekkar. From 1972 to 1978 he studied Florescentian and from 1976 to 1978 International law at the university of Westmonde.
During his year in the Royal Forrintian Army as a conscript Van Tuijl served as a communication liaison to the Karvaland army. He also earned his Ingerish Translator Certificate during this year. After his conscription he remained a military reserve officer for over 25 years.
In 1980 he began working at the Forrintian Ministry of Foreign Affairs en followed an education program to become a diplomat. His first post was as secretary at the Forrintian embassy in Malojdeh, where he met his wife, the Neo-Deltese Saresa Movinia. They married in 1983 and their first daughter was born 1985. In 1988 the family moved to the Karvaland where Van Tuijl became the vice-consul of the Forrintian consulate in Duncaster. A second daughter was born 1989 and a son 1991. In 1992 Van Tuijl was promoted to consul in Bourg-d'Est in Triaquia. A big change in his career happened in 1996 when Van Tuijl was asked by the Forrintian goverment to become adviser to Pieter van Bruynesse, the first Secretary General of the SWAEA. During the two years that he held this post Van Tuijl became familiar with the inner workings of the SWAEA and helped build a lot of the current political structures of the organization.
After Pieter van Bruynesse's term as Secretary General of the SWAEA ended in 1998 Van Tuijl also resigned from his post as adviser and decided to aid the AP (Labourers Party) in the 1999 election and run for a seat in parliament. Being number 45 on the candidate list of the AP, he gained a seat when the party got 81 seats in the election. He was reelected during the elections in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2013. As a member of parliament Van Tuijl was mainly involved with subjects concerning the SWAEA and foreign affairs and served as chairman of the Forrintian parliament's 'Commission for Foreign Affairs' from 2002 to 2010. During his time as a parliamentarian he became known as a fierce proponent of internationalism and a strong and able defender of the multilateral treaties that were voted on in parliament.
After the elections in 2010 brought the AP (Labourers Party) back to power Van Tuijl was asked to become minister of foreign affairs in the new Cabinet. He reaped an unusual amount of applause in the otherwise very restrained Forrintian parliament, when during his first speech as a minister he condemned the divisive and hate spreading rhetorics of the FF (Formatie Forrintië), who managed for the third election in a row to acquire a growing number of seats and went on to criticize the resurfacing tendencies to blame vulnerable minorities and global cooperation for economic downturns and cultural upheavel, both domestically and abroad. "One of the the plagues that keeps casting its cold shadow over our continent, is that in times of crisis and change men feel the need to find a scapegoat to blame for their misfortunes and complaints, instead of reflecting on our own shortcomings and embracing one another in an ever stronger resolve to create a brighter more prosperous future with our neighbours. This is in fact the darkest part our Forrintian and Astrasian souls," according to Van Tuijl. The speech also gained some praise and attention in other Astrasian countries.
Van Tuijl became one of the most well travelled ministers of foreign affairs in Forrintian history when he visited 92 different countries in his first term. This together with his well known admiration of foreign languages and cultures and defensive speeches about multiculturalism made him the favourite target the far-right FF, whose leader Henk Eisgaden dubbed him "the minister of expensive vacations" and "that dangerous xenophile", and accused him of being "the largest waster of Forrrintian tax money" and "a hater of anything Forrintian".
After the elections of 2014 Van Tuijl's AP formed a coalition with the confessional DDU and the staunchly secular and progressive DHP. After again becomming minister of foreign affairs his numerous passionate speeches about the merits of internationalism and intercultural cooperation started to cause friction within the coalition, as politicians of the DDU, DHP and major opposition party LVP feared this would drive some voters into the arms of the FF. They considered Van Tuijl's actions counterproductive to their goal of reducing the number of votes for the FF to less than the election thresshold, the 2,5% of the total votes necessary for getting any seats in parliament.
During the latter half of 2015 a opportunity to address this situation arrived, when Forrintia had to nominate a candidate for the position of Secretary General of the South-West Astrasian Economic Alliance. Van Tuijl was clearly suited for the job, not only did he built a large network abroad, he also acquired a lot of goodwill through his many travels, speeches and fluency in many different languages. His nomination for the 2016-2018 term was quickly approved by the other member states and while the AP was proud to supply the 11th Secretary General, the other coalition members were secretly relieved that Van Tuijl could be replaced by the more conservative and less outspoken Johan de Roos as minister of foreign affairs.
As Secretary General Van Tuijl focusses mainly on expanding the number of members and improving relations with other economic blocs and countries outside Astrasia, in order to create new business opportunities for Astrasian compagnies. Multilateral infrastructure projects are another point of attention, since travel and transport between countries within the Alliance is sometimes still unnecessarily difficult, because some parts of the continent still lack a lot of modern Infrastructural connections. His personal interest and believe in the merits of multiculturalism and internationalism and his progressive left-wing views have let to frictions with member states on numerous occasions. Van Tuijls rigid views on human rights and personal freedom let to several falling outs with Yazinci Mustafa Paşa, the grand vizier of Demirhanlı Devleti, a nation that is joining the SWAEA in 2018, the last year of Van Tuijls term as Secretary General.
