Pactone(/pæktoʊn/), officially the Republic of Pactone, known natively as Pecton (/pakton/), is a country in northern Antarephia, on a peninsula jutting out into the Strait of Lyc, specifically the Sima Channel. It is bordered by Geare to the east, AN136 to the south, and Camolia to the west. Its native language is Salofang, however, it has a very strong Ingerish influence, with almost all the population speaking it as a second language, many using both at home, and many places having Ingerish names. Its largest city is the capital, Edgewater, and there are 3 other "city provinces," Seskiavikh Bay, Mocking River, and Chenoa. The country is densely populated, with over 30 million inhabitants. Most are Tenafa, a mix of Salofang and White.
Pactone has traditionally been inhabited by the Salofang people for thousands of years. In the mid 1600s, Ingerish explorer Henry Lawrence landed in the area around Caswhim, and the country was colonized by the Ingerish. Besides some minor conflicts, the Salofang and Ingerish got along well, due to the peaceful Salofang culture, forming the unique, hybrid Salofeng and Ingerish culture of Pactone. However, starting in the 1700s, tensions arose as the Ingerish raised taxes and used most of Pactone's natural resources, and in the late 1790s to early 1800s a small war was fought, with Pactone ultimately gaining their independence. Pactone lagged behind Ulethan Countries during the industrial revolution, however an industrial boom happened during the early 1900s, and Pactone became an important trade center along the Strait of Lyc, with mines in the south of the country rich with minerals ideal for making technology. Today, Pactone has a strong technology industry, centered in the Techno Coast between Virena and Seskiavikh Bay, and is the origin of the multinational corporation Navisco. Today, it is one of the most developed countries in the world, due to its strong tech and service industries, its low taxes which make it favorable for business, and its liberal government. Its prosperity is often considered to be a wonder due to its tropical climate and mixed population. It is a center of tourism, with sandy beaches, marshy coasts, and rugged mountains, and iconic landmarks such as the Capitol Building in Edgewater.
The area which is now known as Pactone was first settled by nomadic hunters, the ancestors of the Salofang, around 20,000 years ago. They settled and started farming the warm, fertile land. A few small tribes formed, however, the Salofang in the flat coastal plains to the north prevailed, and soon migrated throughout Pactone. The Salofang had a peaceful culture, due to their religion, and did not fight most of the tribes to the south, instead inegrating them into their culture. The Salofang never had a centralized government, rather having several city states and small kingdoms. At the time of Ulethan colonization, their population was around 300,000.
The first Ulethan country to explore Pactone was Castellan, in 1657. They did minor exploration on the west coast of Pactone and in the Talhena Mountains, founding a few settlements, 3 of which still exist today: Santa Maria, Tora Altea (then called Tierra Alta), and Netar (then Xalateret). Many Castellan names were Castellanized versions of Salofang names. They interacted and traded with the Salofang, however they did not have immunity to the Ulethan diseases the Castellanese brought, and over 60% of Salofang on the west coast died, leaving them to drive the Castellanese out. However, they brought news of a land rich in culture and resources back to Uletha, leading the Ingerish to colonize them years later.
In 1664, Ingerish explorer Henry Lawrence landed in Pactone, in current day Caswhim, and founded the town of Lawrence. After this, many other colonists came for the warm climate and rich, arable land. The Salofang, who now had some level of immunity to the diseases they brought, were wary of them, but welcomed them, and only a fraction of the amount of people that had died from the Castellanese died from the Ingerish. The Ingerish traded with the Salofang before making permanent settlements. In 1692, Pactone was officialy made a colony of Ingerland.
Many Ingerish moved to the new colony for its warm climate and fertile land. Many of these had children with the local Salofang, creating a new race of mestizo known as the Tenafa. Due to the colony's fertile climate, it was a favorable place to grow crops such as rice, indigo, sugar, and cotton, and many white plantation owners became wealthy off of growing these crops.
The Ingerish and Salofang initially got along well, however, that soon started to change. Like other Ingerish colonies, Pactone had little representation in government, especially the poorer Salofang, and they felt that the Ingerish colonists were taking advantage of them. Many Salofang who were working as farmers for plantation owners were stuck in cycles of debt, and some plantation owners even went as far as to enslave the Salofang. The Salofang were also not allowed to vote or do many other things. They also felt that the Ingerish were using all their resources and destroying sacred lands. This, combined with growing tension between the Ingerish and white colonists, lead to war breaking out in 1798. Despite the strong army of the Ingerish, they were not focused on the war, and instead were focused on political conflicts in Uletha, and the Pactoneans won the war in 1802, leading to their Independence in 1803 with the treaty of Winburgh.
After its independence, Pactone had a major economic decline. Its economy was still dependent on agriculture, however, Ingerland and other Ulethan countries were unwilling to buy cotton and other products from them when they could get them from their colonies at much lower prices. Slavery was also illegal in Pactone, unlike in the Ingerish colonies, meaning there was reduced crop yield. However, this all started to change in the late 1890s, when the industrial revolution came to Pactone.
Around 100 years after Uletha started to go through the industrial revolution, Pactone started to industrialize. In the last few years of the 19th century, several textile mills were built in Edgewater and Seskiavikh Bay, booming the economy. These mills meant that Pactone didn't have to trade with Uletha anymore and had use for their cotton, and also provided many Pactoneans with jobs. During this time, Edgewater became one of the most important cities in Antarephia.
In the 1930s, coal and precious metals were found in the ___ mountains in the south, and oil was found off the coast. These boosted Pactone's economy to the level of some of the poorer Archantan states. Edgewater and Seskiavikh Bay also became important port cities to export these materials. Due to this newfound wealth and its low taxes, several businesses started to move to Pactone in the 1950s. Due to this, more and more Pactoneans started to move to cities and their suburbs, and many Archantan-style suburbs were constructed. The real estate industry also boomed, as many foreigners moved to the country for its favorable, subtropical climate.
In 1972, technology company Navisco was founded by Erhes Monce in Seskiavikh Bay. At first, it remained small, developing software and in its later years, computers, until 2006, when its smartphone, the NavPhone, was released. One of the first devices of its kind, it blew up worldwide, and Navisco became one of the largest corporations in the world, boosting Pactone's economy. After, they also developed apps and programs. Today, it is the 4th largest technology company in the world. After Navisco's success, many technology companies were started in the Technology Coast, between Seskiavikh Bay and Edgewater. This economical boost has fueled new growth in Pactone.
Pactone is located on the Pactonean Peninsula, which juts out into the Strait of Lyc. In the north is the Edgewater Peninsula, a smaller peninsula which is topped by Cape Edgewater, which forms part of the Sima Channel. The Pactonean Peninsula was formerly underwater, which formed flat, marshy coastal plains which are suitable for agriculture.
In the center of Pactone are the Talhenos mountains (plural of Talhena), an ancient and deeply eroded mountain range, with its highest peaks around 7,000 feet. Many resort towns are located in the mountains, and they are a popular summer vacation destination due to their cooler climate and proximity to Pactone's major cities.
In the south are the ___ mountains, which run all the way from Camolia in the west to Geare in the east. These mountains are higher and younger than the Talhenos, but still eroded, with the highest peak in Pactone, Mount Miriad, being located in them. They are separated from the Talhenos by the Great Valley, which seperates the Mocking River valley in the west to the Lafort River's valley in the east. The lowest pass between them is Alharet Pass, meaning great pass in Salofang, at 1,264 feet.
Most of the population lives in the northern part, where major cities such as Edgewater, Virena, Seskiavikh Bay, and Lafort are located. The south is much poorer and more rural.
