Collab:Federal States/History

From OpenGeofiction
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This page is intended for discussion and consensus on the history of the Federal States. For each era below, there are two options: more broad, national-level conversations are marked as general committees, where all FSA mappers are welcome to contribute and discuss ideas; and eras with more local impacts are marked as regional committees, where the primary decision points should be determined by the region most affected by the selected history.

Committee Structure

UPDATE 7 Jun 2020: The initial committee sign-up period has ended. Committees should now meet and discuss in the "Discussion" tab to identify one committee chairperson who will facilitate discussions, collaborate with committee members, and determine how the committee will create their draft recommendations.

There are no limits to how many committees any FSA mapper can serve on, although it's generally advised that mappers should not spread themselves too thin, or do any work that could be considered overwikification.

General Committees

General Committees are open to all FSA mappers to discuss. If you would like to be part of the committee, please sign up (with a hyphen and ~~~~) in the relevant section below. Committee sign-up periods will run through 5 Jun 2020; at that time, each committee will determine how they would like to organize and create their era's history. (FSA mappers who sign up for General Committees after 5 Jun 2020 should still be able to contribute and help develop the history, but may not be able to decide the structure of the committee.)

Regional Committees

Regional Committees function similarly to General Committees, except committee leadership is restricted to mappers in the identified region. While any FSA mapper should be welcome to offer ideas in Regional Committees, the decision-making process should be determined by those whose mapping is most affected by the outcome.

Committee Procedures

Committees are intended to be somewhat self-governing; as such, there are no formal requirements for how each committee should be structured or what procedures they should be using, provided progress is being made and all committee members are able to contribute productively to the conversation. Committees should be able to present a final draft of a recommended timeline and key milestones for their particular topic that the larger FSA community can use to create a unified history ("canon") of our nation. Since events may have to be altered or changed to fit the larger national history, please be aware that committee drafts may not be final canon, although every reasonable effort will be made to keep as much as possible.

Space is provided in the Discussion page of this article for each committee to meet, although committees may also find it useful to do some coordination off-wiki (Google Sheets, Discord, group emails, etc.).

History

Existing Consensus

The entries in this section are generally accepted as part of the official history of the FSA's development and are not up for debate.

  • The original Federal States of Archanta began as Ingerish colonies, concentrated in the southeastern portion of the current country.
  • The Federal States of Archanta declared independence from Ingerland.
  • Following independence, the FSA expanded to the west and northwest.
  • Indigenous peoples were common throughout the FSA prior to colonial settlement; however, most were either forced out of their ancestral homelands or assimilated into the culture of the colonists.
  • Previously, the Lakes region was settled by the Franquese.
  • Previously, what is now the northwestern FSA was settled by the Castellanese.
  • In modern times, the Federal States is a developed, modern nation and global military power.

Note that many of the eras listed below may overlap. Committees should be in regular contact with each other to ensure all portions of the FSA history can peacefully coexist.

Era 4 Committee

Era 4 Ideas and Topics

  • The FSA should not have a civil war, but should have taken a more militaristic approach to expansion in its history. -TheMayor (talk) 22:03, 24 May 2020 (CEST) Upon further reflection, I've gamed out a potential civil war concept that isn't based on slavery. -TheMayor (talk) 00:20, 22 September 2020 (CEST)
I like this idea for the civil war. I think a stalemate would make the most sense, and should be what we end up deciding on. Let's make this canon! --Lithium-Ion (talk) OGF 02:17, 22 September 2020 (CEST)
  • I have started a major overhaul of Apawiland and am decreasing the population (plus density) greatly. It's now going to be based off of the Dakotas much more. Anyways, I was thinking for Apawiland to be some sort of Oklahoma, since I am creating native reservations all over the state. More space is now available since the population has gone from around two-and-a-half million to around a half-of-a-million. I have some Dakota and Mohawk reservations, and am creating a Powhatan reservation, too, with permission. If anybody would like a reservation for their tribe, please contact me, and I will find a suitable spot for the tribe. I may ask for certain pieces of information, like where the tribe originally lived so I can find a good spot for the reservation. A name does not need to be supplied for the reservation; I merely need the language and I'll find the name. If the tribe uses a conlang, please supply me with a name. --IiEarth (talk) 10:04, 25 May 2020 (CEST)
  • In the case that we are not going to be having a civil war, slavery must have been resolved some other way. I've heard someone mention the possibility of a Wilberforce figure leading an early nationwide abolition, and that could work. This could be made easier if slavery was becoming less profitable, like it was in the United States before the invention of the cotton gin. --Fluffr Nuttr (talk) 23:24, 24 August 2020 (CEST)

Era 5: 19th Century Industrialization and Transportation

Era 5 Committee

Era 5 Ideas and Topics

  • Before working out transportation one should "define" (better map) industrial centers, especially heavy industries. Current approaches remind me of this.
  • I do know that Gramercy, SN is started as a sort of Flint-Gary hybrid (95K pop steel and auto town) and some aspects of Miller, WA when the Walkegan collaborative will be similar but in a larger city. Happy to work with others to figure out how to make the details realistic --Ernestpcosby (talk) 20:06, 2 June 2020 (CEST)

Era 6 Committee

Era 6 Ideas and Topics

  • The Federal States will occupy Hexagonia City in Tigeria from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century to influence trade and politics over the Strait of Lyc. Chazeltine (talk) 21:37, 25 May 2020 (CEST)
  • Womens Suffrage in the 1920s - CartographerKing (talk)
  • Civil Rights Movement for Natives in the 1950s - CartographerKing (talk)
  • Economic Recession in the late 1960s - CartographerKing (talk)
  • Economic Recession in the early 1880s - CartographerKing (talk)
    • All these are also present in American history during the same years provided, so I say that we remove some events, add some, and change the dates instead of making it too similar to the United States. --IiEarth (talk) 07:51, 3 June 2020 (CEST)
  • The lack of civil war and proposed earlier and smoother ending of slavery should mean that some degree of acceptance along racial lines came earlier than in the US and minority politicians and such were elected earlier akin to the short era of black state congresspeople during Reconstruction but without the cut off - --Ernestpcosby (talk) 19:52, 2 June 2020 (CEST)
  • Changed Previous - CartographerKing (talk)
  • Suffrage For Natives in the 1960s. - CartographerKing (talk)
  • Suffrage doesn't need to be an all or nothing proposal. Often it's been part of a granular change responding to certain groups growing power/economic independence within society. Additionally voting rights can be granted and then mechanisms put in place to restrict those rights such as literacy tests or requirements to own property. Originally it could have been only men of the a certain religion and age from the property owning class that could vote, extended later to all men of property regardless of religion but excluding certain races/cultural groups, then extended to all men. I would propose suffrage for native men earlier (perhaps around the time all men are given access but make it that only natives with property and aged 30+) and then having a more complicated suffrage movement mid-century that spotlights issues of sex (so complete women's suffrage), age (reduce the age limits to 18+), race (whatever racial restrictions are still in place) and voting system reform (so removal of discriminatory laws and practices). Perhaps some of these suffrage changes could be linked to the various recessions/depressions as social unrest due to the economy spills over into politics. Ruadh (talk) 09:20, 4 June 2020 (CEST)
  • Controversial Idea: 'Casta' System until the early 1800s. - CartographerKing (talk)
  • Late 1970's, mid 1980's oil crisis between Arya and the Federal States. Paradigm Shift in relations between Arya and the FSA, which will cause a fairly large recession in Arya and a noticable recession in the FSA. Followed by bombing of certain key places in Arya. π•Ώπ–π–Šπ•½π–šπ–‘π–Šπ–— π•―π–Žπ–˜π–ˆπ–šπ–˜π–˜π–Žπ–”π–“ 23:08, 6 July 2020 (CEST)
    • Wouldn't bombing be a reason for war? The rest sounds nice. --IiEarth (talk) 02:20, 7 July 2020 (CEST)
