Names for 335

We'll need to come up with names for:

  • the territory
  • the islands
  • big town (capital)
  • villages
  • hills/volcanoes

We can either decide these as a community between all the mappers, or give more leeway to the mapper(s) of the different areas to name choices, as the one going to actively map the area. I would suggest that the territory name, big island name and name of the big town be decided as a community, as these are key common features, otherwise I'm tempted to give more freedom to mappers of each area to select names for other features. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 15:18, 31 May 2020 (CEST)

I agree with Brunanter. I've named, and hopefully finished my two islands, and will start on the naval base etc soon. The issue is that I don't quite know what culture/place I should draw on while naming. I assume that their were no native peoples, so perhaps more colonial names after the first explorers to discover it and some plain descriptive names, like "Lush Harbor" and the like. That's likely what I'll do, but does anyone else have any thoughts on the matter? For the name of the territory, something like "Winged Islands", "Lizard Islands", "Isles of Grace", or "the Nectar Islands" would seem appropriate to me. What do you all think? --Lithium (talk) 19:54, 31 May 2020 (CEST)

I'm tempted to have the islands be uninhabited for the most part. Historical presence through voyages by peoples from Commonia may be possible to a degree, and perhaps presented through some mapping, but we could easily model the local population on that of places like the Falklands, Ascencion, St-Pierre & Miquelon, which although of European origin, are fairly distinct from their "original homeland". As for the names, I'm not a huge fan of using islands or isles in the name, rather a single name instead. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 21:18, 31 May 2020 (CEST)

Alright, so a distinct, though of FSA/Ingerish/Other origin population. Perhaps there was a small settlement of Commonian natives that died out for some unknown reason, and the remains have been converted into a museum? As for the name of the island, if you want it to be a single name, how about Roseidele? It evokes flowers in the name. I will admit that naming is not something I'm great at, so I think I'll leave that to you.--Lithium (talk) 21:37, 31 May 2020 (CEST)

We don't need to come up with a name just yet. Once we have editors for all parts of 335, then we can come up with that. Other names (like ones you added) can be placed down, but they can always be changed down the road as this is still early development phase. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 21:41, 31 May 2020 (CEST)
Alright, sounds good.--Lithium (talk) 21:48, 31 May 2020 (CEST)

Don't use Commonia for any naming, language or culture inspiration. /wangi (talk) 22:50, 31 May 2020 (CEST)

Wouldn't dream of it! --Lithium (talk) 23:37, 31 May 2020 (CEST)

For the territory name, once suggestion could be derived from Arecaceae, the family of palm trees, perhaps corrupted to Arcacia. Palm trees are very likely to be the dominant tree in the territory. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 00:16, 1 June 2020 (CEST)

Ernest suggested "Arecales", derived from palm order of plants, and avoiding the ____ia name style, which does seem to appear a lot. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 06:49, 1 June 2020 (CEST)
By consensus, Arecales has been chosen as name for the territory. Name can now be used on the map, and linked to FSA and other wiki pages to eventually allow for an actual Arecales page. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 19:56, 1 June 2020 (CEST)

Volcano (area 1)

Infrarrojo done some amazing work here, and is largely complete, so may be a good idea to come up with a name. Not sure about you guys, but as Infra has done the work, would be a good idea to let him decide the name. I will try and think of a few suggestions as well (anyone can propose). BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 22:32, 10 June 2020 (CEST)

Yes, I think that letting infra come up with the name would be fine. --Lithium (talk) 23:44, 23 June 2020 (CEST)

Plan for Naval Base

Here's the plan for the Naval base, or at least what my thoughts are. What do all of you think? --Lithium (talk) 23:37, 31 May 2020 (CEST)

It's definitely a good framework to start work off of. The port will likely have to come out of part of the island near that peninsula, and then breakwaters/jettys can be added to help shelter the harbor. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 23:49, 31 May 2020 (CEST)

Air facilities

I'm doing rough work on the air facilities for 335 (Airport/Air Force base). A combination of the air force/airport facilities into one area was discussed, so I'm thinking of placing the military/civil runways perpendicular to each other, within the same rough area. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 00:14, 1 June 2020 (CEST)

That would be a unrealistic layout. Historically airfields had a variety of runway directions so planes could take off into the prevailing wind; for example see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class_A_airfield
That's much less of an issue with modern planes; hence you now see parallel main runways and occasional crosswind runways.
It's unrealistic for commercial and military planes to differ in the wind requirements.
Here, I think you just need a wide single runway. You can have dedicated taxiways either side for commercial or military. /wangi (talk) 12:32, 1 June 2020 (CEST)
A wider runway can work. One of the military runways was meant to serve landing aircraft, so that can easily be made to be perpendicular, or angled in relation to reworked civil/military main runway. Only a single runway is needed for the civil/military aircraft during normal operations. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 16:04, 1 June 2020 (CEST)

Flag

For the time being, we can use the Federal States template for name/flag for Arecales, but eventually, given the unique nature as an overseas territory, would be nice to have a flag as well. We could either do like the US/Dutch fashion, with the territory having an entirely different flag, the UK model, with a small FS flag in the top left, and a distinct design in the rest, or just follow the French and mandate the FS flag as the only official one. Any thoughts? BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 20:23, 1 June 2020 (CEST)

I've added a proposal below. Erupting heraldic volcano, representing the volcanoes of Arecales, and its blue waters. Other flag proposals are welcome as well. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 03:55, 14 June 2020 (CEST)

I think either 1 or 3 would be the best, although I don't have a strong preference either way. --Lithium (talk) 23:44, 23 June 2020 (CEST)

I'll leave it to the end of the month to allow time for other proposals; given that we have a few we'll hold a vote or discussion between all Arecales mappers to select one. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 00:02, 24 June 2020 (CEST)

Voting

Voting is now open. All mappers of Arecales are asked to please select your preferred choice from either Option 1 or Option 2 and mention it below attached to your signature. Choose only one option.

  • Choice #1. --IiEarth (talk) 23:27, 13 August 2020 (CEST)
  • ...

Let the voting begin! BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 18:28, 19 July 2020 (CEST)

There were three proposals, but really only two designs - a recipe for a split vote. Please remove either 1 or 3 so the voting is between the two designs. /wangi (talk) 18:48, 19 July 2020 (CEST)
I'll choose option one. However, since it's basically the same as three, I'm fine with either option 1 or 3. --Lithium (talk) 19:24, 19 July 2020 (CEST)
Ok, I will eliminate three and go with 1 or 2 for our vote. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 19:39, 19 July 2020 (CEST)

Ok, I'm ending the vote. Its been long enough, only two responses but its 2-0 for the volcano flag, so approving that one as the flag. BRUNANTER [talk to me] Sierra Barzona 17:18, 4 October 2020 (CEST)
