Duncanheim, (officially The Commonwealth of Duncanheim or Ne'en Denkhenheum in Dunkish) is a sovereign nation in eastern South Archanta, bordered by Unesia, Ainciria, and the Ardentic Ocean. It has an area of 73,894 km² (28,530 sq mi), and a population of slightly over 4 million people.
It is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy, with some aspects of governance delegated to direct local democracy. The Monarch, officially referred to as the Theytheda, has been Wolfrik IV since 1988. The capital and largest city (by population) is Kattenden, the metropolitan area of which has an estimated population of 2 million, accounting for nearly half of the total population of the nation.
Duncanheim has been inhabited since time immemorial, with the oldest petroglyphs in Tatheyuneheim National Park dating back at least 90,000 years. Denkhish civilization appears to have originated in the Katten and Pola River Valleys at least as early as 1500 years ago. The modern entity known as Duncanheim began as the Denkhish Empire, which controlled most of eastern South Archanta approximately 1200 years ago. Theytheda Wolfrik IV is said to be a direct descendant of the first Theytheda of that era. Various wars and skirmishes shrunk the Denkhish Empire over the years; this was compounded by the arrival of the Castellanese and Ingerish in the region in the 16th century.
In 1794, with Castellanese colonial expansion having very nearly reached Kattenden itself, a sudden and dubiously convenient marriage between Theytheda Dagoza II's daughter Datsahaidi and Captain Wolfrik Vanderzee (an Scandmarkan-Ingerish privateer and second cousin of the Ingerish King) led Duncanheim to become a quasi-protectorate of the Ingerish Empire, though technically, it did remain independent. This alliance with the Ingerish additionally helped Duncanheim to avoid further territorial losses, with the nation's modern borders established by a series of treaties and truces agreed to thereafter.
Subsequent Theythedas descended from Datsahaidi III and Wolfrik I (who ruled jointly after Dagoza II's death) implemented various policies of Ingerisation of the ancient civilization, some of which remain to this day (such as the use of Ingerish as a lingua franca, and the implementation of railroads in the late 1800s), and some which were very short-lived (such as Christification of ancient temples).
Since 1979, Duncanheim has seen rapid modernization and an economic boom based almost entirely on the technology industry. While this has led to significant improvements in quality of life and education, there is some concern in the present day that this has largely been limited to coastal cities, with some rural areas appearing unchanged since the turn of the 20th century. Duncanheim's citizenry is still divided nominally into historical tribes, some of which pre-date even the Denkhish Empire. The complexities of the tribal system are as numerous as the years they have existed.
