Akin to systems such as E-roads, Asian Highways and the Trans African Highways, after some discussion with Tarephian mappers on the OpenGeofiction Central discord server it was established that a Tarephian road network should be introduced spanning the main international road traffic arteries for passengers and cargo.

The system should span the entire continent and be a project of the Assembly of Nations and Tarephia Cooperation Council together, though it's not necessary to be a TCC member to have roads of this system. For a road to be eligible as part of the system, it should be paved (exceptions tolerated for isolated regions)

This system covers almost every country, yet focuses on having logical routes, following existing mapping where possible. Vertical routes, marked in red, have odd numbers; horizontal routes, marked in blue, have even numbers and concurrencies (two routes overlapping) are marked in purple. The wider lines are the main, ‘trunk’ roads of the network; the thinner lines are secondary connecting roads. The name for the system would be T-roads or Tarephian roads, referenced with T..., for example T1 or T411.

For tagging, I propose the following:

  • int_ref as the tag for only T-roads, similarly to how E-roads are tagged on OpenStreetMap. For example, to the A8 motorway in Brocéliande, the tag int_ref=T2 would be added. Concurrencies are mapped as usual, for example int_ref=T5;T10.
  • ref is optional, though recommended. Each mapper may choose if on their roads, the tag is simply added (for example tagging that road in Brocéliande as ref=A9;T2), if it replaces national references entirely (for example giving it the same ref value as its int_ref) or they may just not add it.
  • The ref tag can be adapted to local formatting (for example ref=T136, ref=T 136, ref=T-136 etc.), however the int_ref tag should follow the same format of the letter T and then the numbers directly, without a space (for example int_ref=T136).

As for the course of the roads, the lines on the map are a rough sketch. Mappers may decide how to route the routes through their territory, but the general course of the roads should be the same and have the same ending points. Here, it is important to collaborate with your neighbours.

I would like to hear what you think about it and hear suggestions and if it should be implemented or not. Thank you!

Looking at the OSM wiki, it seems that the int_ref doesn't render on the map. I would prefer that we only use ref for our T routes so that the T routes show on the map. That way, we make it clear on the map that we actually have a Tarephian Road Network. Chazeltine (talk) 14:26, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
No way to enforce that. int_ref=* is a good way to do it because it can be used for overpass queries, but also specifically because it doesn't show on the map - lower barrier to entry, so to say. Anyone is still free to put the ref=* on, but you really can't, and don't want to, force it on anyone. Taka (talk) 16:00, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
