AN331 - Vitunea

An overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country. It is advised to also create a sketch, you can add a link to this (hosted on imgur or similar)

Vitunea is comprised of one main island - Vitunea Levu Rava - and a number of much smaller islands. The main island is of volcanic origins and is formed around the remnants of an extinct volcano in the centre of the island. This gives Vitunea a mountainous interior that gentle slopes to fertile coastal plains towards the coast of the island. This is similar to several real-life Pacific-island countries (based off of Samoa, Tahiti, and Fiji). The islands are mountainous, with a marine subtropical climate and temperatures across the year range from a low of 18 to a high of 28 degrees. This gives it a similar climate to places such as Norfolk Island. The landscape will be primarily forested, especially on the western and central areas of the country. Areas of population will be deforested and mainly consist of agriculture and human infrastructure.

Invest - The Noun Project.svgHuman geography
A brief description of the territory demographics, economic development, land occupation, infrastructure and mapping style

The island will have a population of ~200,000 people. The capital, Koronuku, will account for 60% of the population and be the primary hub for the entire country. The rest of the population will be split between the two smaller towns and many agricultural villages. Economic development is mainly based around farming, fishing, forestry, some fledgling ore mining, and offshore oil fields. The oil industry is the main provider for the country's economy.

The infrastructure will be limited, similar to poor oceanic countries. The country's GDP and HDI are low; reflective of the low economic output and isolation from trade. Many people of Vitunea are farmers or fishermen. Recently, funding and aid from the AN has facilitated the construction of a container port to allow for more import/export of goods.

Mapping style will be akin to Fiji/Samoa/New Caledonia/ and other pacific island countries.

A brief description of the intended culture and language

The culture of the island will be based off of Fiji, but adapted slightly to create a more unique feel. The Vitunean people are meant to be a seafaring peoples akin to polynesian groups. Planning on Franquese to be a colonial presence, giving a mixture of Fijian/Franquese toponomy in Vitunea. The running idea is that the island has been populated historically by the Vitunean ethnic group, then during the Franquese colonial period, a Franquese trading post was established in Koronuku (aiding in its development as the primary population centre). However, the Franquese gave independence back in the late 20th century due to lack of economic incentive and political pressure from the ethnic Vituneans. Nowadays, Franquese plays a small role in the country's culture by way of language, food, etc. Independence has been positive mostly, but the island has felt a decrease in economic growth.

To support your request provide links to areas of OGF mapping which showcase your mapping skill. Mapping relevant to the requested theme & geography is especially useful
The {{coord}} template can optionally be used to link to the OGF map - it results in a nice formatted link. Or you can paste in a URL.

  • I worked on Navarrete in Anrovia, which is of a similar theme and geography to the requested territory:

  • I've worked on the agricultural fields around Garabedian, WY:

Discussion for clarification & decision

Thank you, Arlo, for your detailed application.

  • Physical geography

AN331 is located at a slightly higher latitude than Norfolk island, but I don't feel it affects your plans. Otherwise, nothing to add.

  • Human geography

I'm rather unsure regarding offshore oilfields. In your plan, AN331 is fittingly of volcanic origin, whereas oil deposits mostly occur in rather "old" sedimentary rocks. As Vitunea is intended to be poor, I wouldn't consider New Caledonia as an source of inspiration for man-made features such as infrastructure. As the 4th largest nickel producer, the territory isn't poor.

  • History & culture

For the seafaring history part, your might consider a past relation/origin with Tolulu, some 3,500km NE. Given AN331 isolation (apart from neighbouring Wenesinia), it's unclear whether this relation could have been maintained over the centuries (Cf. Hawaii and the Marquise Islands).

  • Past mapping

Thank you for the links. Given your history of project hopping and current ownership of 3 territories, we prefer that you relinquish one of your current territories to claim AN331. Thank you for your understanding. --Aiki (talk) 05:14, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for your response Aiki. I agree that a close relationship with Tolulu completely makes sense - this has made me rethink the Franquese influence over Vitunea. Now I'm thinking that historically it was a Franquese territory, now an independent country that is part of some sort of 'Franquese Language Union'. I will remove the oil field idea from future mapping, thank you for informing me of the technicalities of that. With this revised history of the islands, economically-wise, I think a position between semi-poor and New Caledonia level would make sense? I would be happy to relenquish AR042 (Native Asperian Federation) for AN331. I look forward to hearing your feedback. Arlo (talk) 05:44, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Arlo
Hi Arlo, the level of development/wealth is yours to decide. Otherwise here are the mainland and land area relations (having the same single member at the moment). --Aiki (talk) 01:28, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
