We highly recommend that you illustrate your wiki articles with images. The real Wikipedia has images and so should the OGF wiki. Images let other users experience and immerse themselves your country in a way that text by itself can never equal. All we ask are two things:

  1. Please upload only free use images (self-created, public domain, or Creative Commons licensed). This applies to artwork as well as photographs. There are literally hundreds of millions of free use images out there, including most of the images you see on Wikipedia and lots of other places. For details see below.
  2. Whenever you upload an image, please make sure to include a link to the source of the image or other information indicating that it is free to use (e.g. "self photo," "original artwork," "family photo," etc). Thanks!

What images can I upload to the OGF encyclopedia?

You may upload graphics you drew and photos you took.

This includes maps from OGF and modified maps from OGF.

If the graphics you drew contain images you didn't draw—for example, a flag or a banknote with an image on it—then please include a link to the source of that image (or images), which must also be free use.

You may upload public domain images.

There are different types of public domain images:

  • Old images/photos/artwork:
    • In Germany, a work is normally (not always!) public domain if it is 50+ years old [§ 72 UrhG]
    • In the US, a work is public domain if it was published before 1923
  • Images released into the public domain by their creators (for example on sites like pixabay and publicdomainpictures)
  • US federal government images (for example)

You may upload images with a Creative Commons license.

These images require that you credit the photographer, release under original license, and use for non-commercial purposes only.
Different types of Creative Commons licensed images include:

Privacy/personality/trademark rights

Warning: even with all the above usable images, beware of using photos that show product names/logos (trademark rights) or people's faces (privacy/personality rights).

And in all cases, please remember to include a link to the source of the image at the time you upload. Thanks!

Where can I find Creative Commons licensed images to use on OGF wiki?

There are a number of websites whose contents is primarily Creative Commons licensed.

  • Wikipedia - all images on Wikipedia should have their copyright information clearly listed so it is clear to see what can be used on OGF wiki
Wikimedia Commons

Don't upload Wikimedia Commons duplicates. Images on Wikimedia Commons can be used directly on OGF without having to upload the image again - see the adjacent logo as example.
Don't upload OGF-related images on Wikimedia Commons to embed them in the OGF wiki afterwards.

  • Geograph - a project to photograph every grid square of the UK and Ireland - all images are CC licensed.
  • Pixabay - a resource for free use images online.
  • Google Images - you can use the image search tools to filter by reuse license
  • OGF:Photo resources - for images from OGF users
  • Your own photos! - of course only if you give yourself permission to use these on OGF wiki.

No matter where you sourced your image always include a link in the description when you upload.

What information is needed, and where does it go?

When uploading an image, copyright info should be entered in the "Summary" box.

If you're adding copyright info to an image which has already been uploaded, go to the image's information page, usually accessible by clicking on the image. You can then click "Edit" in the upper right to add the information and "Save page" when you are finished.

Here are some examples of what information should be provided:

For an image from the internet...

File:Ogf-copyright-tutorial-1.jpg
http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/File:Khaiwoon-storm.jpg

For an image that contains images from the internet...

File:Ogf-copyright-tutorial-3.jpg
http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/File:Borwald-oberstresien.svg

For a self photo, family photo, or 100% original artwork...

File:Ogf-copyright-tutorial-2.jpg

Exceptions

The only exceptions are for images where copyright information is obviously not needed, such as maps copied from OGF itself.

For example: http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/File:Lathistor1800.png

How can I find images I uploaded?

For a list of all the images you've uploaded, go to Special:log/upload, enter your username in the "Performer" box, and click "Go."

What if I have other questions?

If you're unsure of anything, just ask. You can start a message on the [[Talk:OGF:Uploading_images|talk page]] here, or feel free to contact admin.
