Formation of the country

In the 10th century, the rule of the Frankish nobility over the region gradually waned, giving more power to assemblies of local free men. Foundation of "parliament" in 1024, but built upon earlier courts of justice. In context of Viking invasions, a king rises to prominence by helping the defence of the country. The power of the popular assembly and that of the king are often roughly equal: a law proposed by either needs the approval of both.

Franquese invasion

In the 1190s, the Franquese invade the country and have it governed by a duke. The power of the council is diminished: it serves as advisory council / tribunal that the duke can call. Soon after, the lords gradually stop residing in the country, greatly increasing its de facto independence

Establishment of the ducal republic

In the 1250-1260s, the power of the local assembly has grown so much at the expense of the lords the country is basically independent. Numerous wars and attempts at taking it back, but tangled in a web of alliances with other powers. In the 1280s, the republic becomes stable and established, while trade really starts to make it rich. The lords seem to have mostly given up de facto control over the territory.

The new monarchy

In the 1340s, the family that had claims over the territory dies out/is disgraced, and the ones that gain the title instead aren’t willing to give it up. But, in Searavenag, the republic has been well established. However, they can’t face the threat alone. Politics happen, and eventually, they elect a duke to replace the one who is claiming the throne. Links with the king are further thinned. Basically at this point we are talking about a constitutional monarchy, since the assembly has so much power over the duke who himself hasn’t much of anyone meaningfully above him. The new duke has to actually live in the country, allowing him to actually play an active role in its defence. After the peace that had lasted from 1280-1340, another period of peace starts.

Early modern era (draft)

From 1360 to 1760, occasional involvement in local wars, but never deliberately, the country is very peaceful. In the 1760s, gradual end of the aristocratic republic in favour of a more democratic one. In 1780s the country is similar to what it is today, albeit still officially belonging to the Franquese king.

19th century (draft)

Complete independence declared at some point taking advantage of a complicated situation in Franqueterre. Close relationship maintained, and still today. The country grows a lot richer, and tourism eventually starts slowly in the 1840s.
