Aspera Transportation Commission (ATC)

The Aspera Transportation Commission (ATC) is the municipal agency responsible for running the subway, streetcar, light rail and bus systems within the city of Aspera, Kanitario. The agency allows the city to make over 1.5 million trips every day.


Subway

The new Aspera Rocket, built by Anchor Transportation, is one of the most modern subway trains in the FSA, being first adopted in 2014. Here, 579x passes Bering Yard, nearing Bering Station.

First operating in 1948, the ATC Subway system is renowned for its cleanliness and reliability.

Inspired by the success of the subway system in Lake City, the citizens of Aspera demanded a rapid transit system of their own. The city had grown rapidly by this point, and the government felt that it would be in everyone's best interest to build one.

In 1942, the Aspera Transit Authority became the Aspera Transportation Commission. With millions of dollars in new funding for the project, the city studied many different models of potential subway layouts. In the end, the downtown loop model won out, as it had already proven itself in cities like Lake City and Wallawaukee for efficiency and expansion potential. The route was chosen underground along College, Station, Yonge and Coronation streets, a total distance of less than two miles. It's known as the "Downtown Metropolitan Loop" or DML.

By 1947, the city had completed the loop along with the first three lines. Thus, the line officially opened on March 30, 1948.

Since then, the authority has added five more subway lines, with one under construction and more planned.

Line 1 - The Yonge Street Subway

Technically beating out the other lines by three minutes, ➊ Yonge line of the Aspera subway is the oldest subway line in Kanitario. It makes a straight shot south down Yonge Street from the northern border of the city down to the Downtown Metropolitan Loop. It's also the busiest line on the system.

Line 2 - The College/Acadia/Airport Line

The third busiest line in the system, trains on the ➋ College/Acadia/Airport line connect the DML directly to Aspera Borden Airport, one of the busiest in the Federal States. Also serves tourist attractions like Rogers Castle and Yorkmill Mall. Notable for running in a median in the middle of an expressway, an uncommon site outside of Lake City.

Line 3 - The Coronation/Merico Line

The last of the three lines to open on March 30, 1948, Line ➌ Coronation/Merico serves the western suburb of Merico, as well as the main campus of the University of Kanitario, the Royal Kanitario Museum, and more.

Line 4 - Scandlan

After the triple-line opening in 1948, it became clear the system would be overwhelmed in the near future if expansions weren't undertaken. Thus, on the system's six-year anniversary, Line ➍ Scandlan first opened to the public. Runs from the DML to Scandlan Centre. It's the second-busiest line on the system.

Line 5 - Expo

The original Line 5 was a planned subway line never undertaken - hence why Line ➎ Expo was reserved and eventually used much later than the rest of the sequence. The line opened, like much of the city's landmarks, in time for Expo '92. Expansions in 1998 and 2004 took the line through the East Beach neighbourhood.

Line 6 - Downtowner

With the number of people living in the city's east end skyrocketing, and new public housing projects being built in Trent Park and Randall Park, a new subway line was necessary through the east end of Downtown and to the growing suburb of Scandlan. Thus, in 1962, Line ➏ Downtowner opened. Expansions have taken it to the far corners of suburbia - Malcourt in Scandlan. It's notable for being the only subway line to intersect with another one outside of the DML.

Line 7 - Lakeshore West

The subway bias to the east end was clear among citizens by the mid-sixties. Thus, City Council vowed to build two new subway lines to Merico and beyond. Line ➐ Lakeshore West opened in 1973, however the line was closed between 1993 and 1996 to facilitate a realignment - the elevated deck on Station and Astra streets was torn down in favour of a new tunnel that brought the line under the Great Lakes Tower and the Metrodome - two massive tourist attractions.

Line 8 - Dorset/Dufferin

Work on Line ➑ Dorset/Dufferin happened simultaneously with Line 7. However, it took longer to complete, and didn't open until 1975. This line follows Line 7 until Brookville Park, where it splits off and runs under Dorset Avenue through Dufferin. Plans to extend it out to the airport are in the works.

Streetcars

Aspera first got streetcars in 1862, when the Anchor Bay Street Railway started operations with horse-drawn cars. The first electric streetcars began running in 1892, under the Anchor Bay Electric Railway. A number of companies have existed, including the Anchor Bay Civic Railway, Anchor Urban Railway and Anchor Bay Metropolitan Railroad. The Aspera Transit Authority (ATA) took over in 1922.

Streetcars were planned to be abandoned in the 1970s, after they'd vanished from many other Archantan cities. However, the ATC stepped back and instead began to grow the network, recognizing the cultural significance to the city.

Today, 12 lines are operated, mostly in downtown.

Buses

A large, comprehensive bus network has been establishes across the city.

Light Rail

Beginning in 1989, new LRT lines began to spring up in the city. To date, four have been built.

Line 701 - Acadia

The first LRT in western Archanta, 701 runs from Union Station to Dupelle Station, via Acadia Avenue. It opened in 1989.

Line 702 - Huntsbrook

Runns along Clarkson from Clarkson Station on Line 1 to TBD. Opened in 1997.

Line 703 - TBD

Line 704 - TBD

Aquatic Transportation

ATC also runs the intercity ferries across the bay.
