The Garlian language (in Garlian Lingua garleana) is the official language in Garlis. It is spoken by around 18 million people, primarily in Garlis. It is part of the Northern Uletarephian Romantish languages.

The Garlian language evolved from Vulgar Romantian and is the ancestor of the Romanish language. From the Romanish perspective, Garlian is therefore often called Proto-Romanish.

Example text

Garlian:

Todi humani se nasc liberic ed egalic in dignita ed in iura. Ele sunt predite cu ratione ed conscientie ed devesc a se comporte uni erga ali in spiritum de fraternita.

Ingerish:

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

(Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights)

Grammar

Standard Garlian shares similar grammar and phonological processes with the other four surviving varieties of Romanish languages, viz. Aromanish, Egano-Romanish, Maldavian and Antharo-Romanish. Most of the vocabulary is borrowed from Romantian.

Nouns

While Romanish nouns have three genders (masculine, feminine and neuter), Garlian nouns have only two: masculine and feminine.

  • Masculine noun with indefinite article always ends with "-um" or, less commonly, with "-is": un liminum (a house) or un canis (a dog);
    • Plural: always replace "-um" or "-is" with "-in" (uni liminin, uni canin);
  • Masculine noun with definite article always ends with "-ul" instead of "-um" or "-is": liminul (the house), canul (the dog);
    • Plural: ends with "-i" instead of "-ul" (limini, cani);
  • Feminine noun with indefinite article always ends with "-e": una virghe (a girl);
    • Plural: always replace "-e" with "-in" (uni virghin);
  • Feminine noun with definite article always ends with "-a" instead of "-e": virga (the girl);
    • Plural: ends with "-i" instead of "-a" (virghi);
  • Genitive/Dative form - "-ae" for all singular noun forms: liminae (of/to a/the house), canae, virgae; "-aen" for all plural noun forms: liminaen (of/to the/some houses), canaen, virgaen.

Attention: the letter groups cha, cho, gha, gho don't exist in the Garlian language, so if declensions produce these letter groups, the h needs to be left away: basiliche - basilica, basilicae, basilichi
