Etatono is the capital and most populous urban area in the Ullanyé. The city has a population of 1,037,899 and is located in the middle of the Caztobal district which is home to 1,520,122 people and constitutes approximately one quarter of the country's total population.

Name

Etatono is the name of a prominent waterfall in the hills to the east of the city. The waterfall features in several Agsán myths and local folktales. Etatono was chosen from a list of 10 alternative names in a public vote that took place on 3rd January 1794CE. The names that came runner up in the competition were used for several of the new city's neighbourhoods including Unuedyó and Sublimek.

History

Etatono was commissioned in the summer of 1793 CE by the provisional government of the newly formed Republic of Ullanyé. The site was chosen by the First Revolutionary Committee for a number of practical and ideological reasons. The availability of good farmland, wood, and valuable stone deposits in the surrounding countryside allowed the city to be constructed quickly and cheaply. In addition, the proximity of a good harbour giving access to the Asperic Ocean was considered vital in an era when sea trade was becoming increasingly important to national economics. It had previously been the site of a strategically important bridge and small town. Politically the east coast the island was viewed as a relatively neutral location for the new city since the historic centres of government had been located mainly on the southern and western coasts. The initial construction work began in the spring of the next year following plans drawn up by the government surveyor, Bertal Ikony-Araso, and the Revolutionary Army Corps of Engineers.

Governance

Etatono was administered by the Revolutionary Governmental Authority during its initial construction phase which after 3 years was replaced by a directly elected city council. There are currently 13 electoral areas voting in a council of 65 members. The PR voting system was introduced in 1999CE.

Geography

The city is located on the banks of the Trismars River, approximately 10km inland from the coast and the southern Asperic Ocean. The governmental and commercial heart of the city lies on the stretch of river where 3 minor rivers, the Floré, the Lorr and the Naskidytago join the Trismars. A group of small hills of around 300 metres bound the city to the east while in the south are the remains of extensive wetlands.

Downstream are the towns of Sufú Rilo and Saba Vadedy, both of which are now considered part of the wider Etatono conurbation. The land to the west of the city consists of coastal plain that extends into the neighbouring district of Lal Kiriktál.

Neighbourhoods

Many neighbourhoods have smaller communities and historic districts mainly within their boundaries. The neighbourhoods are categorised initially by which side of the river they lie on.

Economy

Etatono has a diversified economy with a focus on finance, health, education and media. It is home to some of the nation’s largest businesses including the Silver Reserve Bank, Phantom Optical and Mud Boy Technologies among others.

Mud Boy is an Ullanyé based technology organisation that specialises in advanced robotics, drones and machine learning for commercial and military use. KKT has a development office in the Eta Komé neighbourhood of Etatono and a production facility in Dekama. Several industry specific drones and remote robotic platforms have been developed in conjunction with the University of Etatono. The group is named after a supernatural entity from Ullanyé folklore tradition.

Education

The University of Etatono is a public research university located in the central Enyrusar neighbourhood on the south of the Trismars River. The university offers academic degrees at various levels and across a broad subject range, with over 200 degree programmes available. It is organised into three faculties, the Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities, the Faculty of Engineering & Material Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine & Life Sciences.
