Latina (Ciudad) is the greatest city of Latina and the capital of the country. Here are 10 841 147 inhabitants (zensus of 2015). The town was founded in 1489 by the brothers Emilio and Ewaldo Bergez, which was sailed in the bight of Latina in 1488. First seetlement was the southern part of the now Barrio # 1 (Ciudad Vejo). Latina (Ciudad) was from the beginning the capital of the colony Latina and from 1824 the capital of the then independent and as republic united former colonies of New Holland and Latina under the name "Latina".

To differ the town from the country, the offical name is Latina (Ciudad), but in dayly use the people only say Latina or "la ciudad" (the town) or "la muchdumbre" (the crowd).

The flag and the weapon is a catpaw in orange with 4 claws. This was the claw of "Ziggie", the ship-cat of Emilio Bergez, who was the first jumping on land from the arm of his master and catch a mouse. For this good omen his claw is in flag and weapon. Over this cat there is in Latina a popular book for the children: "Ziggie, the cat on the ship", written by Samuel Kolakowsky.

History

Founding of the town

1489 the brothers Emilio and Ewaldo Bergez landed at the latinian coast and between the both great Rivers Rio Guimbras and Rio Norte they founded the town Latina. First settlement was a long streched town from the Esplanade to the Alameda Veja, now the southern part of the Barrio # 1. Around the church of San Jose (see 16, -13.5036, 39.6443 was the beginning of building the town. San Jose is the oldest church of the town, founded 1501. Two canals are dig in the flat land and they divided the town in three parts.

Since Fernando III become king in Castellán (1497 - 1544) in his long reign he spend money to develloped the colony of Latina and the city of Latina. Therefore one of the long west-eastern streets in the old town carrys his name. 1525 was the foundation of the cathedrale Nuestra Señora.

In the north lay the swampy delta of the Rio Agnello and one branch of this river sheltered the city to the east - now there is the Avenida da Liberdad. In the southeastern corner was erected the old castle. The first harbour was there, where now is the street and park of the Esplanade.

Beginning 1549 the northern part of the Barrio Vejo (north of the Alameda) was urbanisized and a strong fortifikation follows the Rio Agnello. In this boundaries the town exist some centuries. Meanwhile in the outskirs were founded some smaller towns, now all incoporated in Latina (Ciudad) as Dos Rios, Santa Rosa, Henares, Salinas, Alemania and some others. Between this towns some villages as Artado, Acacias, Quercades, Fuencarrell and others are fonded. The boundary of Latina was given til 1888, as the urbanisation reachs the former independent towns and villages of the environment of Latina.

Outside the limits of the Barrio Vejo are only few buildings - so the ferry-house in Almolaria at the other side of the Rio Guimbras. The main-road to the eastern part of the colony of Latina leads via Dos Rios in the northeast, where 1638 the first bridge was build north of the point, where the Rio Oriente and the Rio Norte come together. 1798 the first bridge over the Rio Guimbras was build (now Ponte Vejo). South of the Rio Norte stands the ferry house at the area of the town of Salinas. Here a very rough quarter grow up outside the reach of the town. In the year 1808 was build there the first bridge over the Rio Norte, now the Ponte Saguset.

Barrio Nuovo

First around 1780 at the western side of the Rio Agnello was founded the new town (now Barrio # 2), but withuout walls around. The eastern branch of the Rio Agnello was layed dry and there the Avenida Liberdad (to this time named Avenida del Rey) was layed on. First in this area richer people build greater villas with great gardens. One of the last of them is the "Villa Bergez" in the Calle Kahira. Later then craftmens like smiths, carpenters, butcher or baker biuld their working-places. Too breweries and other small industry there gets his home. The great gardens meanwhile nearly all are disappered, only some survived as small squares among the buildings. Since 1800 the urbanisation become denser and around 1840 this area fully was urbanisized. Around 1870 the first smaller houses are layed down and housers with 4 floors are errected.

Barrios 3 and 4

1810 the next new parts of the town was founded in the north (now Barrio # 3 - Opera). The new Opera gives the name to this barrio til today. The fortifications between the streets Boulevard and Contreescarpe were changed to a park. From the Plaza del Rey (now Plaza Independencia) then run to the west two great streets to Aquino (now Avenida de Aquino) and Toledo (Avenida de Toledo) and to the north the Avenida del Norte as a broad and representative main road for the fourth barrio (now Barrio # 4 - Avenida del Norte) and the way to Mendoza.

Urbanisation starts around 1790 with greater "landhouses" along the Contreescarpe-street - surviving til today. 1788 the new theater in the Calle Canale Grande was opened as a magnet for richer people, to live in this area. Then along the Calle Grimoualdini, Calle Canale Grande and Calle des Pescadores small houses and greater "villas" are build and since 1810 then the area between was urbanisized. Insdide the blocks are small industry-areas. Many of them meanwhile are moved to the outer suburbs, but some are there til today - meanly textil-industry on higher level and toy-industry.

19th century

After the independenca from Castellán the new parlament of Latina was build at free space south of the Rio Guimbras (now Barrion # 12 - Cortes). In this area too are the seat of the oresident of the republic and the cemetery of honour. So this buildings are the starting point of more urbanisatin in Almolaria since the 1820-ies.

1842 beginning was build a modern canalisation beneath the streats. So people will stop to name the town as "Latrina Ciudad". In the same years a better net for fresh water was layed and the first structures for gas-lightning. At the place of old gas-fabrication now are the Torre Hermanos Bergez in the southwestern edge of the city.

Between 1840 and 1860 the barrios # 5 (Toledo) and # 6 /Virgen del Mayo) become part of the town and then the urbanisation gone fast and faster. From the 1840ies the devellopement of Latina (Cidudad) follows the railway infrastructure. The type of the houses grow from the houses with 2 floors in the 1860-ies to greater houses with 4 floors in the 1880-ies (see Latina Town Houses).

In the 1840ies the railway-stations of Latina are build outside of the front of urbanisation, to avoid the smoke and the dirt of the railway in the urbanisided quartiers. Therefore there a long ways to reach the stations and the first urban transport with bus-lines with horse-power come in use. 1862 the first tracks for horse-trams are layed.

1865 Latina (Cidudad) has 1.000.000 inhabitants, but 1901 the town reach 3.000.000. When the other barrios become part of the town see at the lists below. In the later 1860-ies the first line of horse- or steam-streetcars are opened and 1894 the first electric streetcar-line.

1885 to 1890 the old small houses at the Alameda Veja are layed down, the street was made straight and then there was build 150 great and representative houses with 5 floors - most in the style of historisme, but some in the early "Jugendstil". Now this rows of houses are under cultural protection - see 16, -13.5072, 39.6204.

Few years later the old houses at the shore near the old harbour are demolished and at the Esplanade was plant a park and along the street a row of hotels and commercial buildings. This work was finished with the first subway-line (metro) of Latina in a tunnel under the Esplanade Park. Also in this time the northern Boulevard of the old town gets his representativ houses like in the Alameda Nuova, to hold people with more money living in the inner town.

Government

Delegationes of Latina (Cidudad)

Latina (Cidudad) is (like Cordoba) one the two cities in Latina, which are a province too. So the Mayor is too the president of the province "Latina (Cidudad)". The mayor is elected directly by the inhabitants every 5 years together with the cortes. So it is possible, that he has no majority in the Cortes of town or province, if his party are not so like as he (or she).

The cortes of the town and the province assembly is the same. They were elected every 5 years. Now there are 193 members - one for roundabout 50.000 inhabitants. Today the PSL (Socialists) have 102 members in the cortes of town and are the party of the governement alone. In opposition is the LC (Conseratives) with 45 members, the PV (Verdes - "green") with 19, the PLyA (Liberales and Atheistes) with 19 members, the AA (Amigos Animalos) have 3 and the PTC (True Christians) 3. One member is independent. The Cortes assembled in the central Ayuntamento in the Barrio # 1, the old Town Hall.

Administrative structure

Latina town-area

Latina (Cidudad) is divited in 11 "Delegationes" (districts). In each district is a local court of justice, a local police-headquarter and a local tax-office. Each district then is divited in 4 to 9 "Barrio" (parts of town). A district has roundabout 1 000 000 inhabitants. All in all there are 76 barrios (suburbs) with some gaps in the numering. The highest number is 88.

Each barrio has - au usual in Latina - a central building ("Ayuntamento") for local gouvernement. In more rural areas are local police and postal service often in the same building too.

All local government is normally regulated in the Ayuntamento between the town and the inhabitants (so there are short ways for the people). Only tax and justice are regulated in the delegationes (districts). The barrios itself are divided in "Quartos" (neighbourhoods), but this are no strict administrative units, only more geographic and historic names.

The five delegationes A til E are traditionally seen as "inner town". This area represents the town of Latina in the old boundary of 1840. Here the barrios are smaller, but denser urbanisized. This barrios carry a traditional running number from # 1 to # 27.

The delegationes F til L are seen as "rural town". This outer districs have a greater area in km², because before incorporation in the city they were independent towns or villages partly with a lot of unurbanisized area. Each Delegation F til L has one decade for the number of the barrios of it (30ies - Artado, 40ies - Alemania, 50ies - Henares, 60-ies - Fuencarrel, 70ies - Salinas and 80ies - Izquedro).

Telephone

Telephone-numbers in the old town are given corresponding with the barrio. So if you know any telefon-number you know the barrio, where this telefone is located. In Latina Cuidad telefon-numbers have 7 digits (older numbers) or 8 digits (p.e. in Barrio 1 the "21" and five or six more digits). If a number ended with "0" it is a central number for greater companies or organisations. If you know the direct call, you drop this "0".

If you click on the relation-link, you see the boundaries of this barrio or delegation.

Transportation

Streets

The motorways ## 1 to 9 and 12 and 13 have theyr end in Latina (Cidudad). The motorway # 10 goes like a horseshoe around the city. Too motorways 15 to Givullion and 27 to Bremen are easy reachable from Latina. To the southwest beaches runs the coastal-trunk-road # 24. Motorway # 1 goes in a tunnel under the bight of Latina direct to the east and joined there the motorways ## 6, 7, 8, 9 and 13. So it is not necessary to drive around the city on motorway # 10.

The primary roads ## 40 to 51 begin in the town. A lot of secondary-roads (beginning with # 100) started in Latina (Cidudad).

Avenida del Norte, 1898

In the town were some broad Avenidas.

  • Esplanade with 5 lanes in each direction leading at the shore south of the old town.
  • Avenida de Libertad (formerly Avenida del Rey) is the first build great Avenida between the Plazua Guëll and the Plaza Independencia in the former valley of the eastern branch of Rio Agnello
  • Avenida del Norte is the main road to the north from the Plaza Independencia to the Plaza Universidad. Here now stay the great Hotels and many theatres. From Plaza Universidad two very broad roads continues.
  • Avenida Esperanza leads to the northwest, beginning at Plaza Universidad. In the green in the middle of the road former lay the tracks of the Northern Railway
  • Avenida Guvillion leads to the northeast, beginning at Plaza Universidad as pendant to the Avenida Espana.
  • Avenida del Bolsa from Plaza Guëll to the the southeast, continued from the Avenida Milan
  • Avenida Santa Catharina leads from the Plaza Guëll to the northeast and with the Avenida Sardenga as second way to the north.

Under all this avenues today lay one or more metro-lines, because there they were easy to build in the green between the roads.

Latinial street signal

In Latina (Ciudad) and other towns in Latina the street names are shown in white letters on blue ground. In the older version only the number of the barrio is shown. In the newer version too are given the house-numbers of the block, the direction to the left and right (norte, este, sur and oueste) and the number of the barrio at the bottom of the shield. [1]. At the right side of the street are the even numbers and the odd numbers at the left side. Lower numbers start at radial-streets from the town-hall and at tangential streets from the south or west. Historical there are some different rules in Latina (Ciudad)

  • "Alameda Veja" in Barrio # 1 = one side running numbers and continuation at the other side
  • "Avenida Sardenga" = even numbers are at the left and odd numbers at the right side

Railways

First railway in Latina (Cidudad) and in the whole land Latina was 1844 the route from Latina-Sur to Saguset by the LSR (Latina Southern Railway). As next came in use the route to Porto Colon (PCR - Porto Colon Railway) from the eastern Station (now abadonned, lays in the area of the recent Central Station) in different steps from 1845. Then 1848 the GWR (Great Westen Railway) from Latina-Oeste (Western Station) opned her route to Cordoba and the western frontier. One year later - 1849 - from the Northern Station (Latina-NMorte) the LADF (Latina-Alemania Developemento Ferrocarril) opened some short railways to Alemania and in the western and northern Area to devellopement the land for urbanisising. Around this line was build the Avenida Espana - in the middle of the street there lay first 2 and after 1867 four tracks. In 1888 all railways were not more in private ownership, but then under control of the country.

So in the outskirts of Latina (Cidudad) were build more and more railway, ending in the 5 stations NORTE, ESTE, ORIENTE, SUR, and OUEST. The connection betweeen the stations since 1866 goes with the horse-tram and since 1894 with electric tramways.

First railways were steam-powered, but 1907 begun the western divison of the national railway, to use electricity for the suburban-trains, beginning in the Western Station (6.300 V AC, 25 Hz, overhead). This trains there run til 1955, but meanwhile the general system of electric trains was installed with 15.000 V AC, 16,7 Hz. Today nearly all trains of the national railway-network run electric.

see main article Latina (Cercanias)

1928 was opened the new main-statin, LATINA-CENTRAL. So all trains with terminated there from other towns, only without to the south, which ended still at Latina-Sur. 1931 too the traffic from the northern and eastern suburbs ended here and not more at the northern station. So 1931 Latina-Norte was closed and the tracks of that railway were used for metro-line # 6. The building now is the bus-terminal Norte.

1965 were closed the western-station too. Its building now is the railway-museum. 4 new tracks were layed over the Rio Guimbras and in an tunnel under the Alameda Veja trought the city to the central station with a lot of new stations and these tracks junctioned with the tracks from there to the east. So the commuter-traffic from west to the east run throught the city.

First line of the Hi-speed-trains (AVE) with new tracks for this system was opened 1974 with two lines between Latina-Central and Du Bois and Mendoza. 1989 a new junction was build from Latina-Central to Latina-Sur, so that the AVE-trains from the north can go throught to the AVE-route to Saguset and Belsante in the south. Parallel to the tunnel of the motorway # 1 under the bight of Latina was build 1991 a tunnel with 2 tracks for goods-traffic.

Today Latina has two main-stations. The Central-station is terminal for the trains to the west, north and east and the southern-station Latina-Sur for the trains to Saguset and the routes along the southcoast to Mar y Flora, Belsante and Minolia. The southern-station now has good connections to the city with the metro-lines ## 7, 8, 9, 11 and 13.

Metro

main article see Latina (Metro)

Latina has a metro-net with now 17 lines. First line was opened in 1907 between Universidad (University) via Avenida del Norte - Plaza Niëll - Esplanade to Cortes, what now is a part of line # 1. In a first step was planed a metro-net with 10 lines and realisized. But later the traffic was grown and so since 1980 the lines 11 to 17 are constructed, to take the heavy traffic from some lines. The line 11 is nearly a circle around the inner city to to make it possible, to avoid the inner parts of the town at many journeys. Line # 12 takes traffic from line # 4 in the sothwest-notheast-relation. Lines # 13 and 15 are new branches of line # 5 and the line # 14 takes a part of the traffic from lines ## 1 and 6 from the Avenida del Norte between Plaza Universidad and Plaza Niëll. In construction is now (February 2017) the missing link of line # 11 between Estadio Nacional and Carlos Sapenas in the northeast of the town, to close the line to a real circle, the middle part of line # 13 and a prolongation of line # 15 in the southeast.

Airport

The Airport of Latina is the biggest of the country. He lays in eastern direction from town. Here starts national, international and intercontinental flights.

From Central-Station the airport can reached with the lines ## 6, 7 and 8 with the AVE-hi-speed-train or with a commuter-railway, that drives west of the central-station in the heart of the city and at its western end via Galilei and along the shore with the great hotels to Bahia Zigonias.
