Metronet April 2018 - with planed lines

The metro net of Latina (Cidudad) is one of the greatest worldwide. First line was opened 1907. Today the net of the Metro in Latina (Ciudad) has a lenght of 1 149.0 km.

For generell information of Metros in Latina to trains, service, fares and publical signs see the main article about Metros in Latina.

Tracks

The spur of the metro is the international normal-spur of 1,435 m (4' 8.5" english). Most of line have two tracks, only in the outskirs are some short single-track parts; most former local railways. Many tracks of the metro do not lay in a tunnel, because since the first planings around 1900 the town hold free by building-law the areas for a right of ways in cuttings or at viaducts, often between two parallel streets, to be able to build a metro-line cheaper as with a tunnel-boring-machine. At the central avenues of the inner city the metro-lines are build as tunnel-lines for aestetic reasons.

Tracks on surface or viaduct

Routes with more than two tracks

Since the opening of line # 15 (from 2005 beginning) eight tracks lay in the Avenida de Liberdad - each two for the lines ## 1, 5, 6 and 15.

Six tracks are layed in the Esplanade for the lines ## 1, 2 and 3 and in the Avenida de Aquino between Senate and Opera for the lines ## 5, 13 and 15. Between Aranjuez in the north and Gustavo Progo lay 6 tracks. Four are for the express-lines ## 1 and 8 and two for the local-service line # 10. A short piece of six tracks lay in the Avenida del Norte between Canaletto and Castellán for lines ## 1, 6 and 16.

In the Avenida del Norte lay 4 tracks - each 2 for the line # 1 and 6. Between Campo de Alondra in the Palermo-Barrio and the Italia Barrio the lines # 5 and 15 run over 4 tracks. Between "Grand Bazaar" and "Estacion Central" also lines 3 and 12 run on 4 tracks, betwen Almolaria and Villa Palorama lines ## 4 and 14 have four tracks, betrween Estacion Central and La Horquilla lines ## 3 and 4 use four tracks and so it is at some other places. On the way to Santa Rosa the lines ## 2 and 12 east of Feria have 4 tracks. If there are more then 2 tracks, always the tracks in the same direction lays normally at the same platform for easyer interchange.

Routes with Express-Service

Express-service will giveen to the "straphangers" at several relations
° Line # 1 will stop only Universidad - Bougainville - Aranjuez. Local service is line # 8
° Lines ## 1 and 8 will stop only Aranjuez - Gustavo Progo. Local service is line # 10.
° line # 4 will stop only Estacion Central - Ronda Gentofte. Local service is line # 3.
° Line # 4 will stop only Redondo - Villa Palorama. Local service is line # 14.

Here always lay 4 tracks - two for the local and two for the express-servive. Most the express-tracks lasy in the middle and the local platforms are at the outside, because so the tracks can be straight and the waiting passengers are not disturbed by the fast express-trains. Further line # 8 will run through between Fabio Megontes and Estacion Sur the direct way in an own tunnel without intermediate station. Local service is line # 9

Special Service for the stadium

At events in the stadium a shuttle-line (intern numbered as 20) will run on own express-tracks north of Estacion Central to the stadium parallel to the normal used tracks, Line # 11 will have a denser service and special trains of line # 1 will go from Bougainville on tracks of line # 11 to the stadium.

Routes with only a single track

Only in the outskirs are some single-track line, which formerly were local railway-lines changed to the metro-service.

Stations

Knot-points with 5 or more lines

° Plaza Niëll see 17, -13.50394, 39.65052

Here joined six lines of the system, the ## 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 15. This is the busyest station of the metronet and the central interchange-point in the heart of the city of Latina (Cidudad). And this was this point from the beginning, as here first several lines are crossing 1909.

The platform for line # 1 from the year 1907 today is nearly so as in the start of the metro servive 1907. The tiles at the walls are now sheltered as a fine piece of "Art nouveau". Now at thisd platform stops line # 6.

Coming from the Boulevard de Liberdad in the north line # 1 makes here a sharp curve with 120 m radius to the west in the Esplanade. This was not so all times. From 1907 to 1935 line # 1 run straight south as now line # 6 to the Southern Station. Meanwhile line # 6 has changed the way south of the station Fabio Megontes and line # 9 from there run to the southern station. A direct line between Plaza Niëll and Estacion Sur today is not given, but you can change at Oeconomico at the same platform between lines # 6 and 8.

1909 here opened great works: Parallel to line # 1 in the Boulevard de Liberdad and then to the southeast run line # 5 and from here with an own platform. One level deeper 1909 then lay two tracks of line # 2 in west-east-relation. The tracks of line # 2 too are uses for line # 2 from 1929 to 1931.

1931 were layed tracks 3 and 4 in the Esplanade for line # 3. Then 1935 came two new tracks in the Avenida Liberdad (there then 6) for line # 6 and two in the Esplanade for line # 1. So line 6 could run through from Universidad to the Southern Station and line # 1 can take the route with a new curve in the Esplanade. Under the Esplanade from then on lay 6 tracks. At last 1982 are opened the track 3 and 4 for line # 5 - now served from lines ## 5 and 15, so that in the Boulevard de Liberdad now lay 8 tracks; each two for lines ## 1, 5, 6 and 15.

Streetcar-lines ## 22, 23 and 25 starts here to the southwest.

° Plaza Universidad see 17, -13.44274, 39.64970

The five lines 1, 6, 7, 8 and 17 here come together. Lines # 6 and 7 so as lines # 1 and 8 stop at the same platforms for better interchange from local-service to express-service. Line # 17 has its own platform parallel to the platforms of lines ## 6 and 7. To interchange from line 7 to 17 is better at the next station in the Avenida Virgen de Mayo, because there the trains stops at the same platform. From Plaza Universidad to the north line # 17 was opened 1975 and to the south 1981.

First metro-line at this place was the blue line # 1 in 1907, who first ended here. At that time at the Plaza Universidad lsy the Estacion Norte (Northern station) of the railway. In the remains of that railway-station now is the bus-terminal Norte (North). Second line was # 6 (now named as line # 8), who starts here 1918 to the Opera and the((Latina Estacion Sur|Southern Station]]. Line # 1 1918 go further to the north as express-line and with line # 1 the line # 6 goes to Bouganinville and Aranjuez - then as local part.

The platforms of lines ## 1 and 6 (now 8) lay in the upper level beneath the Plaza Universidad. Express line # 1 to the northeast takes the inner tracks, so the platforms of the local stations of line # 8 are at the side of Avenida Guvillion. Line # 1 now makes a bow to the west to reach the green in the middle of the Avenida Norte. This bow was build 1931 to set the platforms of lines ## 1 and 8 from the former place under the Avenida Guvullion nearer to the planed crossing of lines to have better interchange to the then planed lines ## 6 and 7. For the local-traffic in the Avenida Givullion the new line-number # 8 (instead of # 6) come in service.

1931 the railway-station "Norte" was closed and the four railway-tracks in the tunnel under the Avenida Esperanza were used since 1934 for a metro-line to the northwest - 2 tracks for local-traffic with line # 7 and 2 tracks for express-service with a new line # 6. The express-service by line # 6 run on the outer tracks, so the local stations of line # 7 have the platforms at the middle of the Avenida Esperanza. The platform for lines ## 6 and 7 lay in the deeper level under the platforms for lines ## 1 and 8 at the Universidad-station.

The steetcar-lines 50, 51 and 52 are starting at Plaza Universidad. Line # 60 touches the place. The streetcar-line # 51 is the main line to the Botanic Garden and North Park, because there is no metro-line and line # 60 is a direct connection from Artado and along the Avenida Jaguar to Santa Rosa. This streetcar-line is planed to substitute for a new metro-line # 18, so that in the future here meet six lines (1. 6, 7, 8, 17 and 18).

° Fabio Megontis: see 17, -13.52479, 39.66437 Here meet the lines 6, 8, 9 and 10 and line 17. The platforms for line # 10 lays in an angel of 90° unter the four platforms of the other lines, two for lines 6 and 16 and two for lines 8 and 9.

South of the station is a loop with 125 m radius, used to turn trains at nothbound way. This loop now can be used too for lines ## 6 and 17 northbound. In this loop can be stored three trains. The loop are made, that turning trains ever stops at the same northbound platform of line # 6 or # 17 and that the driver of the train can stay in his cabine. This loop first was used for line # 6 (now line # 8) from 1918 to 1920, line # 9 1952 to 1953 and later for line 17 (then 16) from 1981 to 2003.

Opened 1907 this station was til 1935 a stop of line # 1 or since 1935 of line # 6 on the way to the southern station. 1918 then the line # 8 reached the station (first named line # 6), 1941 the line # 10, 1952 line # 9 and 1981 the line # 17. 2003 line # 17 was prolongated to the south to Torre Amadeus. Fabio Megontis meanwhile is a busy station with many metro-passengers, running from platform to platform.

The station (and the street) is named after the famous keeper of the FC Juniores Sur.

° Estacion Sur (southern station) see 17, -13.57083, 39.69532 with lines 7, 8, 9, 11 and 13: Here four platforms lay parallel in west - eastern direction for the lines ## 7.8.9 and 11. From all tracks in eastern direction can be reached the depot "B" - Biskaya. Only line # 13 has its platform crossing in a deeper level as the other lines.

First line here was # 1 in 1907. 1920 line # 6 (now 8) and 1935 the new line # 6 reached the station from the north instead of line # 1. 1927 line # 7 started here to the south to Lindley and with connection 1935 to the north. Line # 9 come 1953 instead of line # 6, line # 11 1951 and line # 13 at last 1971.

°Opera see 17, -13.47765, 39.62765 Here cross lines ## 5, 8, 13, 14 and 15 in two layers. First were line # 5 from 1909, second line # 8 from 1918, line # 13 in the year 1971 and later line # 14 from 1989. Only line # 13 has isolated platforms. Lines 5 and 15 and lines 8 and 12 serves common platforms in each direction. The last opened line # 15 from 1984 lay in the first level parallel to the tracks of line # 5.

°Independencia, laying south of the Plaza Independencia at the crossing of Avenida Libertad and Calle Ayuntamento. Lines ## 1, 4, 5, 6 and 15 serves this station. In the deep level runs line # 4 since 1913 from west to the east. In the higher level lay four platforms parallel. First from west with two southbound tracks at one platform for lines ## 5 and 15, then the northbound platform for both lines. Next is the southbound platform for lines ## 1 and 6 and last at the eastside the northbound platform for lines ## 1 and 6. In that manner the tracks then go further south to station "Plaza Niëll" (see above), but before that station is arrived, the tracks of lines ## 1 and 6 split and each line at Plaza Niëll has its own platform.

Entrance to station Almolaria

° Almolaria see 16, -13.5103, 39.5820

Here they meet the lines ## 2, 4, 10, 12 and 14 in the busy quarter near the Khaiwoon Towers, the regional cortes for the Barrios of Transriba and the Western Bus Station. South of the station and junctioned with the tracks of lines ## 2, 4, 12 and 14 is the Depot (Cocheras del Metro) Almolaria with 8 halls (19 tracks) for 38 trains.

The metro-station rougly is a cross. In the first layer are the tracks of line # 2, 10 and # 12. In the second layer are the 4 tracks for the lines # 4 and # 14. For the new constructed line # 12 are used two tracks of the platforms of line # 2 - line # 10 has get a new platform.

600 m in the northwest is the station "Nuestra Señora Nuova" for the lines ## 2, 10, 11 and 12. The line # 2 formerly forks here, so that line has two platforms with 4 tracks in the first layer. Formerly two tracks used for line # 2 and two tracks for line # 10, who has taken one of the branches of line # 2 to Bosque de Ansonario. Here too line # 10 has get a new platform, because line # 12 now stop at the same platforms as line # 2. In the second layer is the station of line # 11.

First line that run here was line # 2 in 1909. 1912 line # 4 crosses here line # 2. 1944 line # 11 come from the north and 19673 line # 10 was opened to this station. Newest line is line # 14 parallel to line # 4. The western arms of line # 2 often changed the service of lines, so 1929 to 1931 as line # 3 or 1942 to 1963 the branch to Bosque de Ansonaria as the shuttle-line # 12. Now the service for the branches of line # 2 is divited in the lines ## 2 and 12.

Near the station starts the streetcar-lines ## 33, 34 and 35 in the west and line # 36 in the northwest to Artado.

° Estacion Central: Lines # 3, 4, 7, 10 and 12 runs here. In the first layer are two platforms for lines ## 3 and 4 - one westbound and one eastbound. Parallel lay the platform of line # 12. Under this platforms are those for the lines 7 and 10 - one southbound and one northbound. First line was # 2 from 1909, then line # 4 (1916), line # 7 (1935) and then line # 10 in the year 1941. 2016 line 2 was substituted from line # 3.

Ghost stations

There are only few "ghost-station" in the net of Latina (Cidudad). Friends of those historic remains must go to Porto Colon. But several platforms are in the same decoration as at the 1910ies and now under cultural protection.

The only tracks, which are given up are the part of line # 11 between Vignelli and Scippo in the Barrio # 9 (Cortes), opened 1956 and closed 1972, as line # 10 takes over the platforms of line # 11 in Almolaria and Nuestra Señora. The two stations "Pugall" and the old "Honor de Patria" are out of use. But "Honor de Patria" has get a new statiuon of line # 10 and with the nearby streetcar-line 33 you can ride to Almolaria. The tracks til today are used as service-tracks for line # 11 to the depot of Almolaria or for rides on the metro-net with historic wagons.

One of the ghost-station is the station of former line # 3 (now there line # 2) in the Avenida Sardenga / Calle Tapies named "Campo Grande", opened on the year 1931 on the new route to Ciudad Lineal and only 18 years in use. As 1959 line # 9 was build, for line # 9 a new station was opened at the Avenida los Ministerios and line # 3 go under the old platforms to the east without a stop at Campo Grande. 2005 line # 14 took over the way to Ciudad Lineal and line # 3 run on an other route to Santa Rosa in that time; therefore was opened a new station for line # 3 at Campo Grande.

Another ghost-stations are the til 1931 used platforms at the southern end of the Avenida Givullion for the lines 1 and 8 at the station "Plaza Universidad".

Depots

Main service point is the depot B = Biskaya (Barrio # 31, 16, -13.5863, 39.7197), southeast of Estacio Sur (southern station) and direct to be reachred from the tracks of lines ## 7, 8, 9, 11 and 13 from the Southern Station (Estacio del Sur). 130 trains here can be stored. In a small hall here stay the historic metro-wagons of types "A" and "B" near the Metro Museum (open only at sunday).

At the outer end of the lines generally are a lot of smaller depots. Additional to them we have:

One of the old "A"-type wagons in Biskaya-Depot, prepaired for a "historic" journey

For historic voyages over the net of Latina Metro 4 wagons of type "A" (the oldest is # 11 from 1907) and 2 wagons of type "B" (from 1926) can run over the tracks. The "A"-type-train (4 wagons) is 76 m and so the platforms at first lines were 88 m long. Later (1929 til 1933) the platforms are made to 110 m for 6 wagon-trains of type "A" til "D". Too are stored some units of the former types "C", "D" and "E" as historic cars.

History

1907 to 1910

The connection between the five railway stations (West, North, East, Oriental and South) was slow with the streetcar-lines and expensife with the horse taxy. As in other greater cities at that time, also Latina planed a net of metro-lines to the some kilometers outside of the town centre laying stations. The first lines should connected the points of dense traffic.

The first planes follows the streetcar-lines between the railway-staitions and into the importants surburbs. The plan of the town from 1898 then containes this following lines

  • 1 = Plaza Bougainville - Plaza Universidad (Northern Station) - Avenida del Norte - Niëll - Southern Station (now part of lines ## 1, 6 and 9)
  • 2 = Almolaria - Western Station - Esplanade - Eastern-Station - Town of Henares (now parts of line ## 2 and 3)
  • 3 = Bajo Artado - Esplanade - Eastern Station - Feria - Town of Santa Rosa (now parts of lines ## 3 and 12)
  • 4 = Galilei-Quarter - Almolaria - Barrio Vejo - Barrio Nuovo (now part of line # 4)
  • 5 = Palermo - Opera - Bolsa - Avenida Milan - Italia (now part of line # 5)
  • 6 = Northern Station - Avenida Virgen de Mayo - Eastern Station - Alameda Nuova - Southern Station (now part of line # 7)

There are some difference, if the system should be private or in the regie of the town. But at least the town build the system. The service of the metro are given to a special company, the FML (Ferrocarril Metropolitana Latina). The town at that time holds 52 % of the shares (now 100 %).

Works on the first lines begun 1902. This first lines in most parts were layed under the great avenues, because that was ground, which was owned by the town. Viaducts are build later more in the outer parts of town, but in the great avenidas the merchants say, that then the avenida looks too cheeap with this iron viaducts as it was to seen in Porto Colon or in Cordoba there at the line # 1. So there the lines lay in tunnels under the roots of the trees of the Avenidas.

1907 was opened the first line between Universidad (University and Northern Station) via Avenida del Norte - Avenida de Libertad - Plaza Niëll - Esplanade - San Lorenzo and through a tunnel under the Rio Norte via Lombardini to the Southern Station. This now is part of line # 1 and a piece of line # 6 and line # 9. On the metro-maps this line from the beginning was dark blue and marked as line # 1. The depot ("Cocheras del Metro") of this line lays north of Universidad, junctioned with a single-track line under the Avenida Givullion. In Latina from the beginning the metrolines have numbers and a specific colour. Therefore the linenumbers 1 to 9 of the streetcars are changed, to preserved them for the planed metro-lines.

In the spring of 1909 was opened the line # 5. It is the so called "red" line from Plaza Palermo via Opera, the Avenida de Liberdad, Plaza Niëll - the Stock Exchange (Bolsa) to the Barrio Italia. This line was called too "the italian" or with a smile "Mafia-line" because she joined the italiask-quartes of Palermo and Italia and too the Opera. Til today this is the busyest line of the system. So since 1909 in the Avenida de Libertad lay four tracks parallel - each two for the lines # 1 and 5.

In the summer of 1909 came in use the "green" line # 2 (now light-blue) from the Eastern and the Oriental Station to Plaza Niëll and then via Esplanade to the western station and to Almolaria. To get from the western station to the northern and southern you must change the train at Plaza Niëll to line # 1 and vice versa.

1911 to 1920

The next 10 years see the prolongation of the east-western line # 2 (formerly green, now the light-blue). First was 1912 the way to Henares in the east with a bridge over the Rio Norte. 1914 the western part to Bosque de Ansonaria was opened, an area with dense urbanisation near the Rio Guimbras.

1914 the short piece to Palermo-Norte and the depot in Palermo came in use, so that line # 5 some years gets two branches.

From 1915 to 1919 a new line was set in use - parts of the planed lines ## 3 and 4. This line get the # 4. The line run from Villa Palorama via the Avenida Nuevo Madrid to Almolaria, under the Rio Guimbras, under the Calle Ayuntamento through the old town, meets line # 5 at Libertad and line # 2 at the Central Stastion (formerly eastern station) and east of the Eastern station this line run via Feria to the northeast to Santa Rosa. In Santa Rosa both branches of the line run on iron viaducts, because the town of Santa Rosa prefers this cheaper soloution to get more metro-tracks as it was possible, if there are build tunnels.

The advantage of a metro-net is not only, to carry heavy traffic, but at the other hand you can ride fast about greater distances. So in the second step the metro-net of Latina (Cidudad) grow in the most important twons around Latina.

In this time the "blue" line gets 1918 7 new stations in the north to Aranjuez. Parallel under the middle of the Avenida Givullion are layed two more tracks for a new line # 6. Line # 1 only stops at Bougainville between Aranjuez and Universidad. This was the first Express-service in Latina. Line # 6 stops at all stations.

Line # 6 then run via Opera, via Calle Gonzales through the old town and with a tunnel under the lagoon to line # 1 (station now Fabio Megontes) and over new tracks directly to the southern station with no intermediate stop. For line # 6 are build east of the southern station tracks to to Bordeaux and line # 1 southeast from the station to Grande Roble (now line # 9).

1931 to 1940

What suburb more outer gets as next a fast metro-junction to the city? So in Dos Rios, the northern part of the town east of the botanical garden, Alemania and Salinas people, politicans and newspapers try to make the own claim clear. Not only from the outskirts in the city, but too from busy suburbs to an other is the wish for easy traffic. So along the Avenida Sardenga a new line # 9 was wished. But first it was necessary, to give the busiest lines ## 2 and 5 more support and at first a real line # 3 was build. All the traffic with only two tracks at the Esplanade was no more satisfiting. So the structure of the net was changed.

1931 the Palermo-shuttle makes it first steps to a new line under the sigal 11 from Plaza Palermo to Plaza Cinecitta. This part of old line # 5 now was only a short appendix, because the tracks from Bajo Artado Centro now become to the own line # 3, first from Plaza Palermo via Esplanade to Plaza Niëll and later via Campo Grande and Feria-Sur to northern Henares and later to the new urbanisized "Cidudad Lineal", a town for the workers with small cheap flats, parks and modern infrastructure. This was a project at the hand of president Carlos Sapenas, to get the votes of the workers. For a while this line ended there in the north of Henares at the Calle 424. The both older ends of line # 2 gets back to the former lines: to Bosque de Ansonario as branch of line # 2 and to Santa Rosa Este as branch of line # 4.

Alemania - so the town-council of Latina say - can get its metroline, if this independent town belongs to Latina (Cidudad) and if the place are free at the Avenida Espana, where til 1931 lays the tracks of the northern railway. So first the new route of a metro-line in the 1930-ies was the independend line # 3 with own tracks.

1931 the formerly Northern station near the Plaza Universidad were closed. So it was the occasion the town has long waited. At the place of the four railway-tracks in the middle of the Avenida Esperanca are planed now a metro-line from Universidad to the Alameda of Alto Artado (and maybe more to the north to Alemania). Two tracks should be used for an express-service and the other two for local service with a lot of new stations. The old station of lines ## 1 and 6 (later names as 8) was set nearer to the Plaza Universidad to get a better interchange and connecting with a new curve to the Avenida del Norte.

1934 this work was done. The two express-tracks are connected with two new tracks of line # 6 in the Avenida del Norte parallel to line # 1. The other two tracks belongs to line # 7 and the local-service and run via Avenida Virgen del Mayo to the new Central Station and in the next years further south to the Southern Station, connected the piece of line # 7 to Salinas with the greater part of the line. This part of line # 7 follows between Universidad and Estacion Central two railway tracs on a viaduct, connecting the former Estacion Norte with the old stations Estacion Este and Oriental and between Central Station and the southern station in the same manner two former connection tracks laying in a cutted right of way. Only few parts of line # 7 beteween Universidad and the southern station lay in a tunnel.

But what with the local-service between Universidad and Aranjuez? Line # 6 now was needed for the line in the Avenida Esperanza and so the old line # 6 become the # 8. The reason was, that if you look on the metro-net around the clock then on line # 5 to Palermo shall follow next lines ## 6 and 7 to Artado.

1935 two more tracks in the Avenida del Norte, the Avenida de Liberdad (there then 6 tracks) and the Esplanade are layed and so line # 1 can take its new route over Esplanade and run under a new tunnel under the Rio Guimbras to the Argonautes Quarter and the new Hight Court there. First section was opened to the Ferrys at Leif Erikson.

Line # 6 then run from the Plaza Universidad to the southern station as formerly line # 1 via Lombardini and then to Roble Grande. Line # 8 (the old # 6) takes over the part Bordeaux as before. To the southern station now run lines ## 6, 7 and 8.

In Santa Rosa lines ## 3 and 4 get some new stations.

1941 to 1950

Then 1941 came again a new line in the eastern and southern Barrios, which was sayed as cheaper to construct as line # 9 and more usefull - the line # 10 from the new Nacional Stadium to Fabio Megontis was needded for the mass of fans.

1942 line # 1 was opened further to the south to the High Courts.

The small shuttle in Palermo of line # 11 was not long in use. 1943 this line go more to the north with the touching the lines ## 6 and 7 at Liramon and 1945 more to the south under the Rio Guimbras to Nuestra Señora and Almolaria. The fans of line # 9 get angry about this and so it was promised, that indeed # 9 will be the next line.

But before this become true Alemania has its great day at May 1955 - linees ## 6 and 7 reaches the town. After long discussions (manus manum lavat) then at the same day, as Alemania are incorporated to Latina - the metro in this area was opened. Lines ## 6 and 7 both run to Alemania over four tracks, line # 6 as express-line and line # 7 for the local stops.

1954 the line # 10 gets a small branch to Bougainville for a better service at stadium-events.

1956 the western railway-station near Almolaria was closed and the commuter railways goes with 4 tracks throught the Barrio Vejo (in a tunnel under the Alameda Veja) to the Central station. So the traffic on metro-line # 2 could be lesser dense. The formerly Western Station now is the railway museum of Latina (Cidudad).

Too since line # 3 was opened via the Esplanade, the line # 2 can get more traffic. So for line # 2 1956 was opened a new branch to Dorso de la Mana in the west and to Henares-Sur in the east. This line now has tree branches in the west. Therefore Bosque de Ansonaria - Almolaria was served like a shuttle as a short living line # 12.

Line # 11 itself go further to the south and ended 1949 at Leif Erikson, to have connections with line # 1 and the ferries at the Galilei Terminal.

1951 to 1960

Line # 11 now was planed a a great circle-line and so 1951 a second part of this line was opend between the Southern Station and Ronda Gentofte, where the new line crossed line # 2 to Henares. Here the line # 11 follows a new build and broad Avenida along the southern shore of the Rio Norte, so that at this occassion this metro was constructed in the cheaper "cut and cover"-methode between the car-lanes of the broad street.

The poeple in the barrios around the Avenida Sardenga long had waited to her line # 9. Now this line gets true. First part was 1951 from the crossing with the Avenida Jaguar straight under the Avenida Sardenga til the Calle Modigliani, then crossing the new Cercania-City-Line at Ronda Grande. Meanwhile works had begun for a line in the Calle Enrico Megaxa and later to Fuencarrell. So then 1952 line 9 reaches Fabio Megontis, take over in the next year the part of line # 6 to the Southern Station as local service.

The line # 6 run from 1953 a new route to Valderama in the southern part of the Barrio Italia in eastern direction. 1958 follows the bridge over the Rio Norte and Bordeaux was reached. In the next years the lines ## 6 and 8 then go more to the southeast from Bordeaux.

Line 11 makes a lot of progress in this years: 1951 in the north the eastern part of the line reaches line # 4 in the south of Santa Rosa (now called Ronda Carlos Sapenas). The western part of the line run about Bougainville and the old tracks for line # 10 to the Estadio nacional.

1961 to 1980

1963 Line # 10 run under a long tunnel beneath the lagoon dirct from Fabio Megontes to Almolaria and there the line takes over a part of line # 11 and the short line "12" to Bosque de Ansonaria. This too was an alternative way for line # 2 between Almolaria and the Central station. With this line was given now a direct connection between both commercial areas and line # 2 has not more to carry this traffic. Line # 11 gets a short piece of new tunnel from Scippo via Redondo direct to Nuestra Señora, because a part of line # 11 and the old platforms of line # 11 in Almolaria and Nuestra Señora then are used for line # 10.

Busiest line was (and is) line # 5. Therefore a new line was build parallel to line # 5. This line gets # 13, because # 12 was foreseen for the branches of line # 2. From 1974 to 1976 the line was opened from Esperanza to Salinas, in the southern part to support line # 7. 1977 a short connecting-line north of Universidad was opened - line # 16 from Chamisso to Universidad. Line-numbers ## 14 and 15 are not used, because this numbers should be taken for parallel-lines to the busy lines ## 4 and 5.

Most loud was the cry from Dos Rios - here are only the cercania the connection to the town (but only to Central station, not the town itself).

With lines 13 and 16 for the streetcar in Latina line-numbers lesser as 20 are no more helpful, so the system of numbering the streetcar-lines then changed.

1981 to 2000

Now, as the net in the inner city was nearly complet, there are two tendencies working together: People in the outer suburbs, who would get too a metroline and the building-companies, used in decenies to have fat profit at the work with the subterraneen lines. Offside of new lines in the outer suburbs people say, that lines ## 4 and 5 are too crowded and that the city here has do to something. Next to the line to Dos Rios twin-lines for for lines ## 4 and 5 come in use, named as 14 and 15, to show the connection to the main-line. Too line 16 (now named as 17) shall become a "beside"-line for lines 1 and 6 in the Avenida del Norte.

Line # 3 itself run from Campo Grande via new tracks along Feria Norte to Santa Rosa Norte and take over this branch from line # 4. Here too are build a project of new urbanisation of the middle part of Santa Rosa and a planed new main road to the motorway # 5. Line # 14 run between Almolaria and Villa Palorama on the local tracks, line # 4 has the espress-service. The way in the Ciudad Lineal of line # 3 was overtaken from line # 14

In Henares some short new routes came in use. Line # 3 (and later # 14) reaches Bosque de Almorox and 2012 line # 2 gets east of Henares then Cinecitta Nuova. At the end was build the new Depot "H" (Henares) and the depot "M" (Mozoncillo) was closed and the area came to the town as ground for the construction material. At same time the viaduct on the eastern part of "La Chaussee" to Henares was abadonned and new tracks are layed north of the Rio Henares. Here then was the first arrangement with the Cercanias, that at the station "Cañamo" the metro and the Cercanias stop at the same platform for easy interchange.

In the north the lines ## 9 and 10 both grow some kilometers. Line # 10 reached 1991 Via los Ranos.

From the beginning the busiest line in the net was line # 5 - the "red" line. Therefore betweeen 1980 to 1985 the line were upgraded from Italia to Campo de Alondra (Palermo) to four tracks - each two in each direction. So no train more must wait for the train before at a station, but can run in his own rhytmus - slower or faster as the train at the other track. Trains to Ninio Bixio run under line # 5, trains to Ponte Bologna get line # 15.

North of Alamado Alto Artado then thw line # 15 takes over the local traffic to Alemania.

2003 line # 16 is prolongated further to the south in a first step to Torre Amadeus, to meet there line # 7. Planed is to let run the line further more to the south parallel to lines # 7 to Salinas. At same date both parts of line 11 are connected with a long tunnel under the lagoon between Leif Erikson and the southern railway-station.

Line # 16 (new) was opened as a diagonale from northwest to southeast, running via Bazaar Grande instead of Plaza Niëll parallel to line # 6. 2011 first opened the section Castellán via Bazaar Grande to Oriente and 2015 and 2016 the prolongations to Bougainville in the north and Valderama in the south. Later is planed to build a tunnel beneath the Rio Norte, but this is a plane for the future. The former line # 16 then gets the number 17.

Newest project is line # 12 - the connection of two branches of line # 2 with own part in the middle. 2015 opened the part Lobo rendirse to the east and 2016 the tracks from Almolaria to Nutria come in service. Here then the ways of lines 2, 3, 4, 12 and 14 are new sorted (see main-plan at top of the side)

Lines Overlook

Now (April 2018) there are 17 lines - the lines ## 1 to 17. Line # 12 is served in two parts as formerly line # 11. In construction is the middle part of line # 12 for the piece between the two branches of the line. Both branches of line #12 formerly were branches of line # 2. Because with this service the middle part of line # 2 make problems, the new connection via line # 12 is the soloution. This connecting tracks run via Alameda Veja, to serve new areas with a metro-line instead of lay two more tracks (then eight) parallel to line # 2 in the Esplanade.

The other lines run point to point without forking. On the other hand the lines ## 5 and 15 can see as one system with 2 branches at each side, but line # 15 is seen as an own line, because the line run on own tracks some kilometers parallel to line # 5, where then lay 4 tracks for the heavy traffic of the "red" relation, which serves the lines ## 5 and 15 together.

Not all trains - specially in the peak-hours - run the whole lenght of the lines.

Works in progress

The line # 11 shall be connected with the other end of her own at the stadium, so that later the line is a real circle-line. This work is in progress and the missing section will be open in few month.

Also works have started for the middle part of the new line # 12. This line will support line # 2 and take on both ends one of the branches of this line. The Branches to Acacias and Santa Rosa Norte will taken from this line, so that line # 2 run from Acacias to Santa Rosa Este. The missing section of line # 12 via the Alameda Veja from the station "Nutria" (crossing line # 3), via "Plaza Major", "Barrio Vejo" (crossing line # 8), "Laraldo", "Alameda Veja" (crossing line # 13), "Libertad" (crossing with lines ## 1, 5, 6 and 15), "Serrano" (crossing with line # 16) to "Lobo rendirse" will be open in the summer next year.

The prolongation of line 15 to the south is in work with a new bridge over the Rio Norte. This line in the first step will go to the south til meeting line # 8 and line # 6.

At the southern end line # 17 will prolongated in a first step to Lindley. Later line 17 shall run parallel to line 7 to Salinas. Between Torre Amadeus und Lindley line 7 then run as express-line and line # 17 takes the local traffic.

Too in work is a prolongation at the southern end of line # 4 to Campo Azur Sur and at the southern end of line # 1. For line # 1 is planed, in Esposico to take over the short cercania-line # 113 to San Miguel and set beneath the tracks some more stations.

Planes for the future

Start to construction can be do in short time for line # 18. This line running from Bajo Artado via Campo Alondra, Gomez y Parador and University and in a straight line under the Avenida Jaguarto to Santa Rosa instead of streetcar-line # 60 (see as thin dotted purple line on the metro-map at the top)

Later line # 17 can run with line # 7 to Salinas. Line # 7 then can be become the express-service there.

Some plans see line # 19 running to the east of Fabio Megontes under the Calle Spartacus - between the lines ## 5 and 6. Then the streetcat-line # 23 can end the service on the tracks in the middle of the street.

Other like the numer 19 used for an express-line parallel to line # 9 under the Avenida Sardenga between Serpico and Ronda Grande and further south to the Estacion Sur.

Some planers draw a line east of the stadium and Feria in north to south direction on the town maps as the line # 19, combined with the Spartacus-street-idea. But this relation is good served by line # 10.

Further are some streetcar-lines as # 43 along the Avenida Aquino candidates for new metro-lines.

Others will spend the money for more express-lines, p.e. to Henares. But this idea has no good chance, because here some Cercania-lines soon now are faster.

All this questions still are in the discussion. First new lines shall be build line # 18 and then more in the outer suburbs.

Trivia

  • Line # 11 makes a circle of the inner town. If someone will say, he lives in the center of the city, he say: "en Once" - means, in the circle of line 11
  • The shuttle between the National Stadium and the Central Station has no line-number, but intern this tracks are known as "linea 20". For this reason there is no streetcar-line with this number. The shuttle only is in use at events in the national-stadium and then named for the public as "10 express". Mainly this tracks are used, to seperate fans of the teams of other towns from the fans of the home team and bring them on the shortest way to the central-station.
  • Many people wish, that line # 12 has an other colour as the light blue of line # 2 on the new metro-plan, but the metro Company say, that both lines are only one relation with two branches.
  • In the night several trains come from the depots or run to them on unusual ways over service-tracks. You can ride with this trains - but you must know them. They are not official sheduled. Normally this trains are for the workers of the metro-company.
  • In the beginning of metro-service in Latina (Ciudad) half of the wagoons are for smoker and 1/3 are first class. First-class-service was layed down 1925 and to smoke in the trains was forbidden 1965. At stations in the tunnel you may not smoke since 1978 - at stations at surface you can do it til today in special areas.
  • Because some lines have a long way to the city (may be 35 or 40 km - that means a time up to one hour), at every stations are toilets - but not in the car. So you must take the next or overnext train, if it is necessary, to make a break for this.
  • Members of the Senat may ride without fare on the metro. This people have the honour, to carry a special red cylinder-hat. So one guy buys such a hat and ride 11 years his ways on line #3 from Bajo Artado in the city. If there are fare-controls, he says, he is a senator and it was accepted. The truth came at the daylight, as a real senator ride in the same wagoon (without his hat) and say to the fare-controler, that he did not know this man as a collegue.
