Mar y Flora lays at the southcoast of Latina in the middle of the Sierra Levante. The city is the capital of the province Sierra Levante of Latina. 2015 there lived 544.823 inhabitants. "See" and "Flowers" is the name in ingersk. This name was given as "good name" for the new town to find new settlers and her women for this outpost in the south of the colony of Latina.


First part of the town was the Barrio Vejo on a hill between the the Rio Frejól (bean river) and the sea. Here now is the Ayuntamento (town hall), the cathedrale and the Plaza Major, the central place. The town was founded 1523 as a strong point along the southcoast of the colony of Latina between the dangerous points for shipping of the Roca Diabolo (Devils rock) in the west and the Cabo Ferro (Iron cape) with his many islands in the east and against the pirates of Belsante. A little bit aside of the city two monasteries are founded - now both are incorporated in the town and both can be visited as museums.

About the roofs of Mar y Flora

Long time the city are sleeping like the maid in the fairy-tale with roundabout 8.000 inhabitants. Mendicono more in the west in this time was the capital of the province Sierra Levante. Only the palace of the viceroy in the hills of 1629 near the town gives some activity for craftsman and artists.

Second step of urbanisation took place around the 1560-ies, as houses are build in the "Barrio Bajo" near the harbour of Mar y Flora. For this new barrio the aqueduct of 1577 was build, because the river Rio Frejol with its the water lays behind the hill of the later Barrio Alto in a deep gorge. Third step around 1700 was the new "Barrio Alto" at the upper side of the cliff. As the first railway from Saguset reached Mar y Flora in the year 1856, the barrios Ferrocarril and Botanico are urbanisized.

The further upgrow of the town begun with the touristic devellopement at the beaches in the west and east of the town in the 1880-ies and the thrughgoing railway to Delta. 1909 the town has 100.000 inhabitants and in this year the it become the capital of the province.

Today the town is the heart of the touristic area of the romantic coast of the Sierra Levante with the wide sandy beaches. Nevertheless in Mar y Flora is some industry - p.e. the great brewery "Golondria" (Swallow-beer) and the brewery in one of the old monasteries.


The city has a harbour of middle importance and an regional Airport with flights to Latina (Ciudad), Porto Colon and Van Pelt, Cordoba, Mendoza, Du Bois, Scippo / Redondo and Topahappan. By railway to Mar y Flora run only exprees-trains, the hi-speed-line # 10 (AVE) is in construction. Because this missing connection the short-distance flights from Mar y Flora to Latina (Ciudad) are allowed.

The city lays at the motorway # 13, leading to Latina (Cidudad) and Saguset or at the eastern side to Delta, at the motorway # 17 to Mendoza and at primary-routes ## 50 and 33 (upgrade to trunk-road at work).

In the town is working a tramway-net with 11 lines, numbered from 1 to 11. The lines ## 1, 2, 3 and 4 leads to the railway-station, line # 1 to the beach at the western side, lines ## 3, 4 5 and 6 to the hotels at the Bahia Casino (Casino bay) in the east of the old city. Line # 10 is a circle-line and line # 11 run to the airport of Mar y Flora. To the Lago Frejol outsice of the town the line # 8 is the connection.

Tourism and leisure

The football-club "Pesces" playes in the second division of the national league.
