"See" and "Flowers" is the name in ingersk. This name was given as "good name" for the new town to find new settlers and her women for this outpost in the south of the colony of Latina.
First part of the town was the Barrio Vejo on a hill between the the Rio Frejól (bean river) and the sea. Here now is the Ayuntamento (town hall), the cathedrale and the Plaza Major, the central place. The town was founded 1523 as a strong point along the southcoast of the colony of Latina between the dangerous points for shipping of the Roca Diabolo (Devils rock) in the west and the Cabo Ferro (Iron cape) with his many islands in the east and against the pirates of Belsante. A little bit aside of the city two monasteries are founded - now both are incorporated in the town and both can be visited as museums.

Second step of urbanisation took place around the 1560-ies, as houses are build in the "Barrio Bajo" near the harbour of Mar y Flora. For this new barrio the aqueduct of 1577 was build, because the river Rio Frejol with its the water lays behind the hill of the later Barrio Alto in a deep gorge. Third step around 1700 was the new "Barrio Alto" at the upper side of the cliff. As the first railway from Saguset reached Mar y Flora in the year 1856, the barrios Ferrocarril and Botanico are urbanisized.
The further upgrow of the town begun with the touristic devellopement at the beaches in the west and east of the town in the 1880-ies and the thrughgoing railway to Delta. 1909 the town has 100.000 inhabitants and in this year the it become the capital of the province.
Today the town is the heart of the touristic area of the romantic coast of the Sierra Levante with the wide sandy beaches. Nevertheless in Mar y Flora is some industry - p.e. the great brewery "Golondria" (Swallow-beer) and the brewery in one of the old monasteries.
