Moepolis (Castellanese: Moépolis; Adarian モエポリス [Moeporisu]), is a city in central Catelia, situated in the flatlands of the Río Rojo basin. The city is host to over 750,000 inhabitants, making it the third city of the state in population (only after Chal, the capital, and Nortineta). The city of Moepolis is unique in that it doesn't have any significant metropolitan area, given it's developed in a mainly rural area.
The name Moépolis is a neologism that stands for The city in the river Moekawa. The Moekawa river was named by an early Nankokian settlement upstream in the river, in a place where multiple flowers blossomed in the fields adjacent to the river, hence, they named the river "Moe", which means "to blossom" in Niwanese: 萌川 [Moegawa]. The name was translated as Moekawa in Castellanese.
|Climate chart (explanation)|
The city of Moepolis lies in the flatlands of the Río Rojo basin, in a primarily rural zone, due to the fertile terrain. There are no major elevations in the area, and all the city lies around 600m above sea level. The Moekawa River runs through the city, dividing it in two, and forming the Manheart island next to the city center. Around the city, but outside of it, there is an irrigation system diverting water from the Moekawa river to the fields around the city.
Moepolis has a Humid Subtropical Climate (Cwa). Summers are usually wet and hot, and winters are mild and dry. The average temperature in the city is 20.7ºC (69.3ºF), with March as the hottest month, in the end of the rainy summer, with 25.0ºC (77.0ºF), and July as the coldest, with a mean of 16.4ºC (61.5ºF). Given its distance to the sea, the city experiences big temperature differences between the day, around 12 to 13ºC from high to low typically, even in summer, when rain is abundant.
The area was first colonized briefly by the Hopponese around the 16th century, which built a small settlement close to the current city center. In 1582, the Castellanese forces in Catelia conquered the settlement and built the Church of Moepolis over the remnants of the palace that was burnt down during the invasion. Moepolis was in its origins a rural town, that used the Moekawa river for irrigation of the area around it, which didn't have a big urban area nor population, but was located strategically in the midpoint of the colonial cities of Nortineta and Chal, which made the city a stopping point for those who travelled between the two cities.
As the industrial revolution arrived to Adaria in the 19th century, Moepolis was already considered one of the most important rural towns in Catelia, holding the most important agricultural fairs of the region and attracting investors to the city. The industrial revolution supposed a turning point in the agricultural productivity of the city, as production increased tenfold between 1840 and 1860. The city started to expand outside of its traditional limits and started to become a city, with the construction of the Gran Vía Shana in 1872, giving way to the first expansion of the city. From then on, Moepolis grew as the agricultural hub of Catelia, and started to develop a strong tertiary sector. Enterntainment and Tourism became big attractions of the city by the early 20th century.
As the city grew, it transitioned from its rural origins to a mainly urban population, making the agricultural economy less significant in the city, even if still today the city still remains as one of the most important agricultural markets in the country.
The main railway line passes just north of the city, having been historically the railway that connected Catelia's two biggest cities, Chal and Nortineta.
The city has two railway stations. The Central station, the oldest, is situated in a bifurcation of the railway west of the city center, is a middle-sized station which developed a neighborhood around it upon its creation, being absorbed later by the main city, and handles rail traffic that goes through the city.
The Terminal station, north of the city center is the biggest rail station of the city. Situated on a branch off the main line, the station handles lines beginning and ending on the city.
The city is served by the Moepolis Airport, a small-sized commercial airport that serves mainly local flights from Nichiuri and Suttineta.
