The estate of Penge, some 8 km northwest of the town, is the ancestral home of the Queens of Wiwaxia; Queen Eglantine I was Countess of Penge when she was chosen to be queen after Wiwaxia declared its independence from Ingerland in 1722. The Queens of Wiwaxia still hold the title of Countess of Penge, and the estate belongs to the crown.
