SkyRide Airlines is an airline in the Federal States. SkyRide Airlines was founded in 1996 as several smaller regional airlines merged to form a single, national discount airline. To lower operating costs, SkyRide Airlines offers all-coach unreserved seating on all flights and concentrates operations at secondary airports throughout southern Archanta. SkyRide Airlines is based in Lake City at Gunnison International Airport, where it fully occupies three of the airport's four concourses.
In the 1990s, Lake City's Gunnison International Airport was struggling due to ongoing airline consolidation of operations at the larger Lake City International Airport on the west side of the city. By 1993, the Lake City Aviation Authority authorized plans for a runway and terminal expansion at LCX that would allow the city to close Gunnison Airport entirely. As a last-ditch experimental investment, in 1996 a group of Lake City business leaders purchased several struggling regional airlines that were based at Gunnison Airport and consolidated them under the SkyRide Airlines name. Rather than competing directly with the larger legacy airlines, SkyRide built its operations around the economy price point, streamlining operations and enhancing efficiency through fleet and class standardization and focusing on serving secondary airports. The experiment was a resounding success, with SkyRide expanding operations at Gunnison while LCX expansion stalled due to ongoing legal issues. By 2006, the Aviation Authority officially cancelled plans to close Gunnison Airport, instead committing funds to improve terminal accommodations for SkyRide, which now operates upwards of nine out of every ten scheduled flights at the airport.
As increased operations at the notoriously landlocked Gunnison Airport increase noise and pollution impacts on the working class neighborhoods surrounding the airport, SkyRide has sponsored and funded numerous mitigation measures throughout the region. This includes donations to the Lake County Forest Preserve District for their expansion of the East Branch Forest Preserve, which includes several blocks of former neighborhood taken for an expanded clear zone for the extension of Runway 14/32 in 2017, and the 2020 sponsorship of the new SkyRide Park, a linear park and bikeway on an old railway embankment running through the Deerbourne and Peacock Park neighborhoods of Lake City.
SkyRide serves numerous cities throughout the Federal States, with limited but expanding international destinations in Ardencia, Deodeca, and other Astrasian nations. Gunnison Airport remains its domestic hub of operations.
