Since it’s coming back up and now that the FSA capital area has a project manager, I think we should have a discussion on some preliminary plans for our capital area. While there are some basic sketches located here and Zytik has been discussing his proposal here, I think we need to discuss some larger concepts first:

  • Was Huntington planned and built earlier in the FSA’s history (e.g., Washington DC), a more modern master-planned city (e.g. Brasilia) or somewhere in between (e.g., Canberra)?
  • Should the entire district be master-planned, or should a smaller urban area around the primary government buildings be planned first with more “organic” growth throughout the district?
  • Is the topography flat, hilly, or somewhere in between?
  • Any preliminary plans for the suburban areas in the three neighboring states?
  • Any other topics that need to be discussed before we decide on a city plan.

This thread is not to determine or vote on a plan for Huntington. We have plenty of time to figure out a full plan for the capital (all the time in the world, actually) so there’s no reason to rush any decisions, but figuring out some of these “base line” ideas now will help us come up with a better, more realistic capital in the future.

Here are my current impressions of what Luciano coveyed to me in the original communications probably not exactly what he meant or where this will end up):

1) TBD. My vote is a Seattle model where you have an old city that has had certain areas completely torn down and built from the ground up for the modern world

2) A central carefully planned core and primary road system with natural growth filling in the rest.

3) Hilly. Perhaps even small gorges. Google the Cornell University Campus and look at it on OSM for what this means.

4) No plans currently, I would like to see a plan at some point but one does not exist

Other) Airport location?

Other) Want to have an exhibition like area where each FSA state has its own building or exhibit

Other) Rail system type

Other) How high tech should this city be [A Tokyo or a Chicago]

Other) Rail / Transit Span: A London or a Boston?

Other) Sustainable post modern buildings or old outdated ones?

Other) How much of a university presence / student populus

Other) What Monuments and government buildings should there be?

Other) What government do we have, as this affects the design

New and improved topo plan for debate

Thanks. I like your rail-concept with the 5 lines. Do the Pentagram shows "Downtown"? I think, this is better located more northeast, at the river opposite to "EX". The motorway there then more to the west. The exhibition areal seemed too big - I would set it more to the north in the loop of the river.

The motorways for me are o.k. - the southeastern can go to Stanton (running in the other side if the river) --~~~~

Easy enough to make those changes without creating a whole new map, moving the Downtown and shrinking the EX.

For the motorways, Histor, I was thinking that the Southern Portal (I75) would go to Saint Jacobs, and South, but I28 would tee off in Southern Gilliad and pass through Southwestern Archanta to join your existing 28, but those are irrelevant at this point as Gilliad is very underdeveloped.

Before beginning to implement the topography onto the map, what other steps should I take with this template? (More feedback from more people than just Histor would also be appreciated)

I like the general topo plan. I think the high points could be used to influence the major avenues of the city: HuntingtonTopoOption1-sightlines.jpg

Ill send a picture of the major avenues I was thinking, especially since I want to orient major roads up streambed valleys

And Also the new Downtown is across river from "EX"

Heres some red wire pasted onto my map on rough locations of could be thoroughfares

I too really like the topo (nice job, Zytik), and I also really like Wangi's idea of those two major thoroughfares.
