[#6002]

I posted this on Discord, just posting it here too for anyone who (probably rightly) doesn't access the OGF server.

Just a quick note from me (I will also post this on the forum). Today I searched the name of my state in the FSA West Discord chat to see whether there was anything I needed to attend to from my mapping sabbatical and I was really shocked by what I saw, people have been rude and unkind about me and my mapping in my absence and I think that it's completely unnecessary. I feel the need to explain and defend myself from these attacks that took place when I wasn't on this server or able to respond to them.

Firstly I am sorry that I was inactive in Oronotia for so long. I am a full-time teacher with a family and a long commute. This year I have moved jobs, moved house and found my work disrupted and increased by the global pandemic. I took a sabbatical from mapping involuntarily so I could deal with these things. I made sure that before I left OT the main highways and railways were mapped in accordance with the wider FSA plan so that it wouldn't be a 'roadblock' for the region.

If anyone would have messaged me between June 2019 and April 2020 with a pressing need for collaboration or to seek my permission to change OT then I would have responded. No-one did. If it had been bought to my attention during that time that I would need to map in OT or lose it then I would have made that decision at the time. As it was it wasn't until the end of April 2020 that I received a message about OT and it took me two weeks to respond as this was at the height of the Coronavirus outbreak in the UK and I was working from home and trying to protect and support my family.

I am going to leave the OGF server soon because OGF Discords have always been a source of strife, drama and discord (the clue is in the name). I will still be collaborating in the West Lakes with my nearby states, many of whom have been very understanding. If you have any other need to contact me I suggest you send me a direct message.

I wouldn't take it so hard, I was in the Discord for a while and I can see why the admins think it's a bad idea. It was full of annoying kids with racist and homophobic tendencies and there was one day where I kept getting spam pinged after politely asking them to stop, and of course kept going so I went ahead and left.

I joined the discord a while ago, and so far I haven't seen any racism or homophobia, and any issues there get dealt with quickly. I know there were other discords that failed, but I think that this one has been a good way to connect and get good feedback from other mappers, as well as learn about things I may have otherwise missed. No one on there is annoying, at least most of the time, and the mods there handle Drama quite well. While issues clearly occur, and I have, I must admit, been a minor part of a few, I think that right now, the pros outweigh the cons. I'm sorry this happened.

Being on the Discord server, I would have to say that I did not see a lot of racism/homophobia at all. Spam pinging was a problem for sure, but with a new moderator it will probably stop.

Also, I should mention that the spam pinging was pretty much only done by one person (I won't identify them on this forum) and if they spam ping again, a permanent ban is possible for them.

There is racism and homophobia almost every day. I wont be afraid to call them out. Users like Rhiney, Jbob, Plainoldbread use racial slurs and insensitive language directed at members of the OGF community frequently. If you have missed this racism, maybe you are too dulled by it and that is a shame.

Addendum: The only reason I remain on the discord is because 90% of FSA collaboration is through there and without it I would miss out on projects.

I will admit that I've seen the N-word posted a few times (which it obviously shouldn't be), but the vast majority of any posts that could be considered racism or homophobia (and such posts aren't common) are ironic posts. I have never seen any of these types of posts specifically directed at members of the community either.

At risk of getting involved in a convo I don't really want to have anything to do with, I will say that within the past couple weeks I was added as a moderator to the discord. While there's not much I could do about anything that happened before then, I've attempted the best I can to quench drama when it starts and minimize spam ping and channel misuse, and I'd like to believe there's been a couple narrow improvements there. I haven't noticed any serious racism or homophobia, and have been pretty direct at telling people to stop when I think comments, including ironic jokes, have come close to crossing the line. The biggest lingering issue is likely drama considering sometimes people don't know to just stop engaging... and clearly, looking at the forum recently, that's not just a discord problem

Urmm, not to get into this when i really shouldn't, but I'm 90 percent sure Planie is a person of color.

Wow - we have an OGF-Forum here (this) - but the "real life" is on an extra-forum? Very strange.
