News from Wyster for foreigners is published in The Wystrian Observer / Si Wysth Dithcaes.

Geography and climate

Wyster consists of one large island and several smaller ones in its direct vicinity. The smaller western part of the main island is semi-flat, with altitudes increasing towards the cliffs of the northern coast of Greath and with prominent hills in its center. The larger eastern part of the main island is more rugged and altitudes reach up to ca. 2000 m. The highest mountain is the Breudhyn (1995.4 m), located on the tri-border point of counties Hlierdhe Sceurne, Hlierdhe Ludhe, and Troc. The country's longest river, Bel, has its source nearby; it streams to the west and ends up in sea at the city of Bealsenc (lit. Mouth of Bel).

Due to Wyster being an island, it is entirely surrounded by water. Wyster discerns the following bodies:

Body of water Wystrian name Meaning International name

History

The smaller kingdoms of present-day Wyster were united in the 9th century under the House of Hraen, that was to rule the entire island until the 15th century, when the last crown princess married the heir to the throne of Glaster, enabling a fusion of both kingdoms as the Kingdom of Both Glasters. The mainland part of the united Kingdom was however bought and conquered by Ingerland between the 1770s and the 1820s. Attemps of the Kingdom to reestablish its hold on its territory failed and it was forced to sign a humiliating treaty in 1828 that saw the recognition of an independent North-Glaster and the invader's hegemony over the rest of mainland Glaster.

The treaty caused political turmoil on the Wyster island, the remaining part of the Kingdom of Both Glasters, and after six years of unrest, the king and his government were deposed in 1834, to make place for the First Wystrian Republic, which lasted however only three years. The First Kingdom of Wyster was subsequently established in 1837, with a cousin of the former king being appointed as the new monarch. He ruled until his death in 1859. His son (still a minor) was represented by a regent, but this government was toppled a year later, after which the Second Wystrian Republic was founded. This lasted until the last former king was elected president in 1890. During his presidency, the consitution was changed again in 1895 to enable the Second Kingdom of Wyster. The king was however shot in 1902. The unstable Third and Fourth Wystrian Republics that followed filled the gap until 1921, after which a civil war broke out until 1927, the year that saw the foundation of the Third Kingdom of Wyster. Wystrian politics have been relatively stable since that moment.

Administrative division

There are fifteen 'Counties' (Hivenne, sing. Hiven), lead by an Earl/Count (Hibh) or Countess (Hivas). Until 1964, the leaders of the counties were actual Earls/Counts and Countesses, but in the Household Act of 1956 the number of Counties was reduced to 15 and the title Hibh/Hivas were henceforward reserved for the democratically elected leaders of these Counties. Members of the noble families are however still allowed to participate in the elections. The original Hieve/Hivasse have been known as Hieve/Hivasse Baan ('Counts/Countesses of the Realm') since 1956.

Politics

Monarchy

Wyster has been a constitutional kingdom (again) since 1927, when king Hrevyn III ascended the throne following the Treaty of Bealsenc that ended six years of civil war. A grandson of former king Hrevyn II (1859 - 1860 and 1895 - 1902), Hrevyn III's rule proved to have a stabilising effect on the country's politics and in the '30s and '40s, the Wystrian economy was brought to the level of the neighbouring countries, democracy was expanded (in 1965 a law was passed that enabled suffrage for all Wystrians, abolishing the limits based on the amount of tax that a citizen had to pay in order to be allowed to vote) and Wystrian culture boomed.

King Hrevyn III died in 1970 and was succeeded by his son King Mearh I (1921-2017), who was king until his death. He and his wife queen Soor (1924 - 2008) had two daughters, Queen Atheanne (*1949) and princess Learra (*1955). The Queen has no children, so princess Learra is first in line to the throne, followed by her son prince Thyllyn (*1982).

Executive

The government (irhith) is appointed by parliament, although the king usually nominates the candidate prime minister (ceagrys sie irhith, or 'chairman of government'), who discusses the composition of the government with the political party/ies that represent a parliamentary majority.

Legislative

Wyster has a bicameral parliament, the 'Assembly of the Realm' (Higurstat Baan). The first (permanent) chamber is the Uth Binder (lit. 'General Court'), which consists of 169 members who are elected every four years through a first-past-the-post system. The second chamber is the Uth Peg (lit. 'High Court'), which convenes only when summoned by either the king, 6/7 of the members of the Uth Binder, or 42,000 citizens (or a combination of these three), to discuss special subjects (e.g. constitution changes). Once a decision is taken by the Uth Peg, it is immediately and automatically dissolved. The Uth Peg has 21 members who are elected by a system of proportional representation (Single Transferable Vote).

Political parties

There are two parties that normally manage to enter the Assembly: the Dyrt Bleugh ('People's Party') can be considered conservative, with an emphasis on a smaller government, a lot of freedom for citizens and business to organise their own lives, etc.; the Dyrt Warh ('Fortress Party') tends to be more progressive and emphasises welfare and wellbeing for everyone. There are other, smaller, parties, but they rarely get more than 20 seats.

Elections

The general elections of 2 July 2017 ended in a victory for the Dyrt Warh.

  • Dyrt Warh (Fortress Party): 88 seats
  • Dyrt Bleugh (People's Party): 61 seats
  • Dyrt Blys (Green Party): 9 seats
  • Dyrt Ceethceus (Citizens' Party): 8 seats
  • Farstastat ab Muh (Unity for the Future): 3 seats

The next general elections will be held on Sunday 4 July 2021 at the latest.

The general elections of 7 July 2013 ended in the first victory for the Dyrt Bleugh in several decades.

  • Dyrt Bleugh (People's Party): 93 seats
  • Dyrt Warh (Fortress Party): 49 seats
  • Dyrt Blys (Green Party): 16 seats
  • Dyrt Ceethceus (Citizens' Party): 11 seats

Economy

Currency

Banknote of 100 Craem

The currency of Wyster is the Craem (gen. dual Creamo; gen. plural Creum). There are six coins (1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50) and six bank notes (100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000).

History of Wystrian currency

Craem means 'bronze' and relates to the existence several centuries ago of the higher value coins of Gaers ('silver') and Purt ('gold'). When the Wystrian currency system was standardised in the 19th century and blended metals were starting to be used for the production of coins instead of the pure original ones, it was decided to settle for the name Craem as that was the currency with which people were the most familiar.

The current division has been in place since the financial reform of 1987 that saw the final abolition of the subdivision of the Craem in 100 Streum (gen. dual Stròmo; gen. plural Strim. Streum was a contraction of Hast Rum = '100 pieces'); the 1, 5, and 10 Streum coins had already been abolished since 1944, leaving only the 25 and 50 Streum that were less and less frequently used.

Transport

Roads

Wyster has a small number of highways, concentrated in the more populous western part of the country. Wystrian highways can exist as motorways (indicated by a W after Corris Wysth or 'Wystrian Road') or trunk roads (indicated by a C after Corris Cathfreethuh or 'Main Road'). Currently the following highways exist in Wyster:

  • W1 : Hreawirc - Fylith - Cervirc
  • W2 : Hreawirc - Saent Agatha - Saent Maar ta Wierc (border between Hord and Greath)
  • W3 : Cervirc - Caendhec - (interruption) - Loohac - W6 near Saent Cevun ta Bidh
  • W6 : Hreawirc - Saent Cevun ta Bidh - Bealsenc - Neussenc
  • W7 : Hreawirc (a short section only that doesn't leave town)

The Bric sie Higurstat Sur ('Road of the Assembly of Nations') in Cervirc connecting the W1 and the W3 is technically also a motorway, although it has no number.

  • C1 : The Corris Deaf Vor Yd ('Our Lady's Road') in Hreawirc, the main link through the city.
  • C2 : W1 near Marrynybh - Leese - Coo (north)
  • C3 : W2 near Solusceen - (link to W6) - Hreawirc International Airport (Corris sie Aerport)

Culture

National symbols

Flag

The flag, which was introduced in 1837, is a vertical tricolore green-black-orange, with two upside down gold stars in the black part. The two stars represent the two parts of the former Kingdom of Both Glasters and they are upside down because that kingdom doesn't exist anymore. It is said that if the kingdom is restored, the stars will be turned upside up. Critics say that this symbolism implies a claim on the territory of Glaster, but although several discussions to change the flag have been started in the last 50 years, no serious steps have been taken to propose alternatives.

Religion

Wyster's main religion is Ortholic Christicism, organised as the Ortholic Archdiocese of Hreawirc (Wystrian: Arcudaesus Ortholeh ta Hreawirc), comprising the entire kingdom. The seat of the Archdiocese is the Cathedral of Saint Alicus of Hreawirc (Catheedrol Seenth Alicus sie Hreawirc).
