Hello! It's Monday again. My effort to make Odrava a better, more realistic city continues. But last week I also had the feeling that I haven't drawn anything detailed for a long time, and I wanted to make something innovative and new, and so I drew a quay converted into a residential area.
Before I start, did you know quay rhymes with key, not kay? I was kind of surprised. The original title of this entry was supposed to be Hey, let's build a quay which would have been really fun, only if it rhymed.
Okay, now for the quay,
No, neither do these two rhyme, but I keep pronouncing quay the wrong way. Does it come from French or something?
the backstory behind this area is that it used to be a harbor/mixed industrial area, but then new branches of the harbor were built, that were further from the city center, and these became unused. Sooner or later someone realized they could lucratively turn the place into a residential area and make a profit, due to the good transport connections and also, because water is... cool I guess? So the quays were cleaned, factory floors and warehouses were demolished, and instead of them came trendy cafés and monotone office buildings.
Today, it's a neighborhood so desperately white upper middle class, it gets pressed juice everyday and thinks Taylor Swift was amazing in concert. But actually, the parks, plazas, cafés and amenities also invite other people to spend time there than rich businessmen and their yachts: it's also become a popular spot for Odrava's moms and the elderly.
Inspired by the amazing website Vetřelci a volavky, which features an extensive collection of sculptures and artwork in Czech and Slovakian public areas from the second half of the 20th century, I decided to fill Odrava with art too. I also really enjoy giving the objects deep, artistic names: and so in this area, you can find Canyons and Fairies in front of the tax office, Undulation in front of the Ministry of Environment, Evanescence at the plaza where Café Quay is, What If lurking out of the water near the tip of the quay and finally Empathy just outside the Unibank center.
This was a fun weekend project, otherwise I'm obviously continuing with the Odrava revamp. Next week I'd like to (once again) figure out the railway situation in the city; catch you then.
Comments are v welcome
oh my my my, what rhymes with quay
Yes, quay (Kay) does come from French (Thought it's spelled Quai). Nice marina! There will be one (probz more) in Jankovar as well. Cheerz ~~Michal (talk) 19:08, 15 January 2018 (CET)
Hold on. The idea is a pretty good one, but do I read between the lines that you reallyreallyreally think Taylor Swift is NOT superior to that Cyrus person you always boast about ? Because I would say so 99 out of 100 times (that 100th time I would be lying unconscious in the gutter advocating Kate Bush). ~~Marcello (talk) 21:15, 15 January 2018 (CET)
- The one on OGF who boasts about that Cyrus person has got to be me tho --Stjur (talk • OGF) 22:21, 15 January 2018 (CET)
I thought quay was either pronounced like the letter K or like the German Kai, now I'm just confused... Anyway, finally some details in Odrava! Love them so much! Can't wait to see the entire city being mapped like that soon 💛 --Stjur (talk • OGF) 22:21, 15 January 2018 (CET)
Great project there Eklas! Very believable and I'm loving your remodeling of Odrava. Also...I thought it was Key, I'm sure a lot of places in Canary Wharf are called Quays like Keys? Or is this another one of them Mandala effects? Also this fight between Cyrus and Swift...Like...what's the difference?! They're both the same :P Female teen-pop, has to be either Katy Perry or Ariana Grande, fight me! --Aces California (talk) 23:06, 15 January 2018 (CET)
- Thanks everyone! Speaking of pop singers, who honestly cares about Swift or Cyrus? I was just making fun of people with a bland music taste. If anything, the true pop icon is and will be Nicki Minaj. --Eklas (talk) 07:14, 16 January 2018 (CET)
Damn the English Language. To me it doesn't matter now since I am not taking any more English exams when I am going JC. I like the Quay; it gives me inspiration for my next stage of mapping in the industrial town of Keppong. May I will do a transformation in this tiny 'recreational area' I have created long ago but I have never worked on it. If you can adjust the tram system a little bit so at least there is a tram to the Quay. Can you also add some Gigante supermarkets branches there and other international businesses?--Happy mapping and God bless, ZK (talk) 23:59, 15 January 2018 (CET)
- Thanks and good luck! Though I'm definitely planning on introducing some international chains to Odrava, this is probably not the best place to start. Gigante would require a lot of space, and Verona coffee I imagine rather belongs in some tourist spot. Maybe some time in the future. --Eklas (talk) 07:14, 16 January 2018 (CET)
