Hi! This is my first post after a three week pause. After I finished the extensive railway four-parter, I felt like laying the bliki off for a while, I wasn't very productive in general. I'm actively trying to spend less time online, and so far it seems like 2018 is the year I'm sort of getting my life together, so that's cool. But yeah, anyway, in those three weeks, I drew a rural area east of my capital city, but more importantly I started working on the city center of Odrava, which is what I want to talk about today.
First things first, it was a year ago that I launched this wiki blog. Ever since then I've posted 45 times, almost every Monday.
But honestly, I like writing these. I've always had a passion for writing, and it's also a great way to practice my English, even though my style is very informal (on purpose) and I'm sure I make some spelling mistakes, let alone my terrible punctuation situation. Another awesome thing is that there are people actually reading these, I'm honestly kind of surprised, back then I would usually share what I wrote with my friends, who didn't always appreciate it, so, thanks for reading.
Same city, old town
Odrava, ooh va-va.
Recently I've taken a different approach to mapping, it's more casual and relaxed, I draw for like an hour or two daily when I'm in the mood.
Being the obsessed perfectionist that I am, I also think I've finally learned that my OGF work will never be as perfect as the real world, and that it is okay. Is my capital city a mess? Yes. But I'm having fun, and there's not much fundamentally wrong about it, there are plenty of worse places around this fictional world.
My first ever bliki entry was about moving my capital city from Drahany, located on the tip of a peninsula, to Odrava, the current location. And nothing I talked about in that post can be seen on the map now. I've been back to square one several times. There are two things I struggle with when it comes to drawing made-up cities, and that's airports, which I'm going to attempt soon, and historical centers, which are too complicated and advanced for me, an easy basic local white gay.
I somehow managed to find motivation (??? I know, I'm also shocked?) so took this upon me as a challenge, and I started working on the city center of my country's capital. And honestly, so far so good I would say. The area you're currently seeing is a blend of buildings in various styles built in different times throughout the 19th century. In my vision, Odrava's center underwent pretty major periods of redevelopment in the 19th century, so historical buildings are only found in the absolute core of the old town. I'll get there.
Comments are v welcome
half of my heart is in odrava ooh va-va
Are you implying that 19th century buildings aren't historical? Hehe, I really like how Odrava is turning out. I wish I could make cities with a similar level of detail! --Trabantemnaksiezyc (talk) 17:24, 16 April 2018 (CEST)
- I think "historical" is a relative term - when talking about tenement buildings from the 19th and early 20th century, most of them were built in styles imitating renaissance, baroque, classicism and other older styles. While they arguably look good, many of them don't possess any major architectural value. Also thanks! I don't usually go into detail, but drawing shops and restaurants and hotels is so easy yet it adds so much to the atmosphere of the place. --Eklas (talk) 19:53, 16 April 2018 (CEST)
Glad to see you up and at work again Eklas, but it's good your spending less time online! I can't say similar for myself, but it feels like so far into 2018, it's been less a lifeline, more a tool. Been out socializing, been doing more of my hobbies in Planet Coaster and graphic design. So that's always good! I think I remember starting my Bliki post soon after reading a few of yours, inspired by you sharing out your progress, before then it never even crossed my mind to actively be involved in the community much.
I think your mapping has gotten SO much better settlement wise since your first Bliki and Drahany, you can really capture the essence of a large city by detailing it's surroundings rather than detailing the fine bits. That's where my struggle comes in, I never know how large I should make a capital!
And you say you need help with airports? Well maybe you can call-in that favour I gave to you for helping me with the electricity grid, I've been known to do airports well(ish).
- Aw thank you! I'm glad I was an inspiration. I'll see about the airport, thanks for offering me help. (PS: I left you a comment on your most recent bliki entry and you haven't responded to it yet) --Eklas (talk) 19:53, 16 April 2018 (CEST)
- Oh god! Sorry Eklas, I didn't think you wanted a response to it xD But then I'm probably remembering what you wrote wrong xD Sorry again! --Aces California (talk) 20:56, 16 April 2018 (CEST)
Wow, the old town looks really cool. Reminds me a bit Cracow old town but if you really want it to look like real, the only problem I see is too small amount of POI (when comparing to Cracow), the rest is like carved out from RW - buildings, street layout, everything looks perfect. Also I need to underline that you made a big progress from Drahany to new Odrava. And just a little note: you are one of the few users who really know how to draw motorways and their interchanges without making a road engineer cry. --Rüstem Paşa Discussion 18:20, 16 April 2018 (CEST)
- Thank you! I've been to Krakow a few times and I loved it there, but my biggest inspiration for the Odrava center is obviously Prague. Your point about places of interest is definitely valid, I'll make sure to create some. --Eklas (talk) 19:53, 16 April 2018 (CEST)
Being a relatively new mapper, I don't totally know how much better is Odrava than Drahany (that town has been deleted). However, I still find Odrava to be one of the best 'in-progress' cities in OGF world, besides Gobras City and relatively completed Khaiwoon. About the city centre, maybe one day I should find time to do up the central area of Odessa modelled after yours (I will rename it Oridiev-Yesan as I found out recently that Odessa is a relatively famous town in Ukraine.)--01:31, 17 April 2018 (CEST)
