Agarderia (pronounced /'eɪgɑːr'dɛriə/), officially the Democratic Republic of Agarderia, was a socialist state in eastern Uletha. Succeeding the Commonian Protectorate of Agarderia, it existed between 1945 and 1986. Its capital was based in the largest and most populous city, Aby.

Naming

The Agardirian Communist Party had originally envisioned a state named 'The Socialist Republic of Agarderia' in 1933, a name proposed and then published in their party manifesto in 1934. The Agardirian Communist Party was ejected from politics in 1935, following the election of far-right Dolanus Leever. The party was forcefully disbanded and driven underground on his ascension to dictatorship the following year. Then, the Agardirian Communists adopted the name 'The People's Republic of Socialist Agarderia' in a attempt to boost popularity among ordinary citizens.

Pockets of communist support gradually strengthened as Dolanus Leever's regime grew increasingly unpopular. By the beginning of the partisan war in early 1944, the Agarderian partisans were fighting for solely the 'Peoples Republic of Agarderia'. Upon the declaration of war in Glaster, the 'Democratic Republic of Agarderia' was declared, with a base in Buranran. Upon winning the war, the name was retained as the Democratic Republic of Agarderia.

History

Origins

Agardirian Communist Party

Communism in Agarderia has its roots in the Agardirian Red Front, founded in 1928. The ARF never gained support from the majority of Agarderia and by Dolanus Leever's rise to power in 1935, was still a relatively minor party. It was overshadowed by the Agardirian Social Party, which had a majority in the Agardirian Parliament until Dolanus Leever's People's Party overtook it in the election of 1930. On the re-election of Leever in 1935, the ARF was ejected from the government by force and was pressured to reform into a extraparliamentary organisation.

The ARF was almost completely destroyed in 1936 with Dolanus Leever's seizure of power. Support for the ARF was declared illegal. Its activities were forced underground with a significant presence in northern Agarderia. It worked with close co-operation with the Latanians, Glastians and Karamskan Communist Parties, receiving arms and funding across the border. Insurgencies by communist guerrilla fighters increased in size and frequency through the years. Ultimately, the Agarderian Army failed to limit their operations and by 1944, the Agarderian Communists controlled much of northern Agarderia. Communist rebellions in the south were ultimately suppressed by troops from Commonia and Agarderia, although economic conditions began to worsen and workers began to strike more and more frequently.

The weakness of the Agardirian Government in dealing with economic and political problems led to the Commonian coup of January 1945. Dolanus Leever was relieved from power and imprisoned, along with any figures who refused to collaborate. The Commonians launched an immediate terror campaign and crackdown on areas of Communist activity. Over the next 6 months, more than 5000 communist supporters were arrested, jailed or executed.

Declaration of Opposition

In dire straights, the Agardirian Red Front organised itself into an established entity on the 1st of June 1945. Commonia responded with force and managed to drive back the communist forces to the heartlands of their operations outside Buranran by late November. The desperation of the communist forces resulted in a secret deal being signed with Communist Glaster and Latania. Communist Agarderia would declare itself a state and the armies of Glaster and Latania, and by a separate treaty, Karamsk, would launch an invasion to support the 'legitimate' communist government. Communist North Glaster was doing considerably better in its war with the Republic of North Glaster. Latania had mobilised its army in January, after the Commonian Coup.

Formation and Civil War

The Democratic Republic of Agarderia was established on December the 1st 1945. Latania invaded Agarderia on the 6th of December, followed by Glaster, on the 15th. The Commonians, having anticipated an impending invasion, withdrew to more defendable positions, abandoning most of northern Agarderia to the Communist forces. However the advance stopped there and progress was largely halted. The Commonians held back the Glastian forces on the Agarderian east border, defending Hevaney and Sankey from initial thrusts by the Glastian Communist Army. Well equipped and prepared Agarderian and Commonian troops, coupled with their technological advantage and superior strategy and tactics prevented the advancement of the front lines. The Commonian Army held Hevaney up to their withdrawl in February 1946, despite being outnumbered as much as a 5 to 1 at times.

With no progress being made, Latania began the annexation of its eastern territories taken during the Agarderia-Karamsk War of 1936, starting on the 25th of January. It declared war on Agarderia on the 2nd of February. Although the advance was slowed by Agarderian defenses to the south, the Karamskan Army began advancing into western Agarderia.

General Lduth dul Henste, seeing that fighting a 3 front war was impossible, ordered an immediate evacuation of all Commonian troops and personnel. The Commonian Eastern Fleet arrived on the 5th of February to destroy the Karamsk-Glastian blockade of Agarderian ports and to clear a path for evacuation. Aircraft from the carrier CFS Liberation decimated the Blithim Naval Base and sunk almost half of the Glastian Communist Fleet. The modest Karamskan Navy was totally destroyed during the attack to support the Commonian evacuation. 10,000 Commonian soldiers and personnel were evacuated in the following week. The evacuation was complete by the 14th of February and the Commonian Protectorate of Agarderia was abolished.

Dolanus Leever was released from prison and resumed command of Agarderia, as a last command from Gelet Hall to Agardirian General Memen Slanka. It was unknown to him that war had broken out. Infuriated at the state of the Agarderian war effort and Commonia's abandonment of Agarderia, Dolanus Leever declared a mass arrest of Commonian collaborators. However, most elements of the Agardirian Government had either been evacuated or had fled to Monsarrl to escape the communist advance. Nevertheless, Memen Slanka was executed on the 19th of February for accusation of collaboration with the Commonian forces. Co-operation between Aby and Monsarrl was limited, and disorganisaton and low morale resulted in thousands of men deserting or defecting to the Communist side.

The Latanians breached the Perwa Gap defenses on the 15th of February and Agarderia was encircled by the 19th. Aby finally fell on the 20th of February. Most remaining troops had surrendered by the 22nd, with the exception of the isolate around Weerhay and Lodken which contained the remnants of the fascist government. The final surrender came on the morning of March 28th and the Agardirian War had ended.

Postwar

Occupation and the consolidation of power

Map of the occupation of Agarderia following the Agardirian War

After the end of the Agardirian War, troops from Karamsk, Latania and Glaster occupied Agarderian territory on the pretext of 'security measures'. Karamsk withdrew its occupying forces in accordance to the peace settlement, which allowed Agarderia to retain some of its western territories. This happened officially on the 13th of October 1946. The final result was, however undecided, and it was only at the end of 1948 that the border was solidified.

The trial of figures from both the Leever and Hall Governments of Agarderia happened throughout 1946. They were based in the capital, Aby and were headed by the 4 Nation Alliance of Glaster, Agarderia, Latania and Karamsk. Almost all defendants were found guilty, despite protests from the International Criminal Court. The majority of the Agarderian leaders were sent to prison or executed. A further 1000 people were arrested during this time for 'counterrevolutionary activities'.

Most notoriously, all 16 members of the former Council of Ministers and Dolanus Leever, were found guilty of treason, officially titled 'a betrayal of the Agardirian State and the Agarderian people' were sentenced to death by hanging. The hangings were done over a period of 3 days in the traditional method found in Glaster and Agarderia for the execution of high-level traitors. They were hung by a rope from the balcony of the former Presidential Palace in front of a rapturous crowd of an estimated 10,000 people. Dolanus Leever was executed in this fashion on the last day of the hangings, on November 4th. The rope hanging him snapped and he was beaten to death by the vengeful crowd below him. It is subject to debate on whether this was a deliberate action or whether is was chance.

Recovery of Agarderia

The progression of the Glasto-Agardirian War

The occupation of eastern Agarderia by the Glastian communists was a concern to Agarderia. After they lost their war there, the government of Communist Glaster fled to the occupied region of Agarderia, along with refugees fearing anti-communist purges in Glaster. Since Agarderia had little to no control over the newly established territory of 'West Glaster' which had no guarantee of ceding the occupational zone back to Agarderia, they were perceived as a threat and potential rival. As a result, Agarderia declared war on communist Glaster on the 16th of January 1948.

The Glastian Communist government was in the process of moving from Hevaney to Tibrin when war was declared. In order to cut communication and reinforcements from reaching the government, Agarderia launched offensives across the length of the occupied zone beginning 18th, cutting most of occupied Agarderia off from the rest of the Glastian forces. The Glastian government was trapped in Hevaney and surrendered after 4 days of fighting. The rest of the Glastian occupational troops surrendered on the 21st of January. The occupational zone was to become an autonomous region of Agarderia, with the Hevaney government having direct control over the communist portion of northern Glaster. However by that time a new government had been formed in Glaster that declared the Hevaney surrender illegitimate, and vowed to continue the war with Agarderia. The war resumed on the 24th and continued for 6 more days, with Agarderian and Glastian troops from the Hevaney government pushing into Glastian territory. The Tibrin government surrendered on the 29th of January and was subsequently dissolved. The previous agreement with the Hevaney government was restored. From then on until the fall of communism, Glastian Agarderia was governed as an autonomous region ruled from Hevaney by the Glastian government-in-exile.

Latania had withdrawn its troops from northern Agarderia by June 1949. The transferal of power took place on June 2nd. Karamsk demilitarised the Agardirian exclave of Arkamsk-Lubacz on the 19th of May 1955.

Reconstruction

The reconstruction of Agarderia began immediately after the Agardirian War ended, but was overshadowed by occupation and further conflict. Recconstruction began properly in 1948. Agarderian rail and road infrastructure had been seriously damaged during this period by the partial scorched earth policy the Commonian government enforced during the Civil War. Dundar Hett used political prisoners and prisoners of war as a labour force as a part of their communist reeducation scheme to repair the necessary routes. Despite the harsh working conditions, most of the surviving prisoners were released after construction had been completed. During this time the Buranran-Tibrin railway was constructed, providing a rail link between Agarderia and Glaster for the first time.

The construction of factories and housing was pioneered by the 'United in Labour' scheme to combat unemployment. The principal of this policy was for the Agarderian workers to help rebuild their own factories, houses and amenities by themselves. Overall the scheme was successful, and it was officially concluded in 1951. This resulted in the distinct architecture of this era, prefabricated blocks of flats with little variation. Once consequence of United in Labour was the housing shortage in the decades that followed, caused by the building of apartments that was only sufficient to house Agarderian population up to 1950. Subsequent building projects lessened the issue, although it burdened on the Agarderian economy at a later date.

The Dundar Hett Hydroelectric Dam

On a policy of increased containment and self-sufficiency, construction of Agarderia's first hydroelectric dam commenced the 1950, although it was only completed by 1976. During its construction the dam became a 26-year-long national joke, owing to its presence of its image on the Agardirian Emblem when officially it did not even exist. It was much regarded as a vanity project by much of the Agarderian population and after completion proved to be a 'white elephant' and a burden for Agarderia. It continued generating electricity after the fall of communism until 2001, when it was sabotaged during the Civil War. Since then it has been slowly drained out.

Sullus Hett Era

Ascension of Sullus Hett

Living conditions, literacy rates and nutrition rates generally increased during the 1950s. However, Dundar Hett's health had been in decline in the 1950s due to old age and the advent of Parkinson's disease. Dundar Hett stepped down in 1955 and was succeeded by his son, Sullus Hett. This move was viewed with great suspicion in the circles of the Agardirian Government, for there had been no previous indications of nepotistic intentions from Dundar Hett, and it was suggested that he had been blackmailed by his son into offering him this role. Dundar Hett died later on in 1955.

Sullus Hett implemented a plethora of new authoritarian policies that set to repress divergence in Agarderia and isolate the country even more from the international community, and later even communist countries that traditionally had been allies, such as Latania. Agarderian membership of the AN was de facto suspended. Agarderia instead decided to draw closer ties to states that were deemed 'ideologically compatible', including Belphenia and Antigo. Agarderia relied on imports to maintain its economic position and to feed its people. By 1957, imports of goods almost ceased, state terror was rife and living conditions had begun to plummet.

Glastian Rebellion

Situation of Agarderia in 1959

By 1958, under an imposed isolation from its neighbours, autonomous West Glaster was facing an refugee crisis, as more and more ethnic Glastians that had previously fled after the Civil War began to return to Glaster proper via communist-occupied North Glaster. The autonomous government of West Glaster turned a blind eye to Glastian emigration over the poorly guarded Glastian border. It was no secret that, since 1955, West Glaster was at ideological odds with the Hett Government.

When the emigration problem surfaced in January 1959, Sullus Hett issued an ultimatum to the West Glastian region to close the border, or face the implementation of direct rule. The West Glastian government ignored the ultimatum which resulted in Agarderian troops being sent to the Glastian border in an effort to stop emigration and to crackdown on pro-Glastian protests in West Glaster. This act of aggression against the Glastian peoples in Agarderia resulted in both North and South Glaster mobilising their army. Latania made no attempt to voice support for Agarderia. Despite West Glaster resisting direct rule, it was implemented on the 4th of June 1959. Most members of the West Glastian government were imprisoned. This provided to be Sullus Hett's last mistake as the occupied portion of North Glaster was not under Agarderian control, but instead exclusively under the control of the autonomous West Glastian government. As a result, there was a power vacuum in occupied North Glaster. The territory declared its unification with the rest of North Glaster on the 12th of June. Outraged, Sullus Hett commanded that the Agardirian Army resist any attempts at Glastian unification. Instead, however, the Agarderian troops stood down.

On the 16th of June, the Secretary of the Communist Party of Agarderia, Ludlen Saqwen, supported by Latania and the Agarderian military, marched on Sullus Hett's office and demanded his resignation. Facing war alone, humiliated by the loss of Glaster, and alone without allies inside Agarderia, Hett was forced to resign. He was jailed and then sentenced to exile in West Commonia. In 1966 he was assassinated by the Commonian Department of State Security (DSS), possibly on behalf of the Agardirian Government.
