Importantly it handles high volumes of economically attractive general and project cargo, as well as bulk cargo. Westmonde's docklands, with six oil refineries, are home to a massive concentration of petrochemical industries. Electricity generation is also an important activity, with three nuclear power plants, a conventional power station, as well as a wind farm. The port has an important position in the worldwide trade in steel, fruit, wood, coffee en tabacco. The old Forrintian bluegray limestone quays that border the Ewa from the north to south of the city centre have been retained for their sentimental value and are used mainly by cruise ships and short sea shipping.

Diamond trade

Another important sector of the Westmonde economy is the diamond trade, that largely takes place within the city's diamond district between the central station and the Stadspark. Westmonde has four diamond bourses: three for gem quality stones and one for bort. The Westmonde Diamond Council plays an important role in setting standards, regulating professional ethics, training and promoting the interests of Westmonde as a center of the diamond industry. About 85% of the world's uncut diamonds pass through Westmonde and 54% of all cut stones. With a turnover of $53 billion, the city is the largest center of diamond trade in the world.

Many tourists visit Westmonde each year for its old city center and many museums. Others come to specially for its shopping centres or the many jewellers in the diamond district. There are several high end hotels that cater to the visiting tourists. Many cruiseships dock in the old port near the city center.
