Woolonia is a wool-producing country in northern Antarephia.

A Sheep-Centered Society

Woolonia is a modern herding society. Nearly all of its industry revolves around products and things related to the country's over abundance of sheep.

Woolonia is now the producer of 74 percent of the world's wool. Woolonia is also famous for its lamb dishes, and is one of the largest exporters of sheep and goat products (milks, cheeses, meat, soaps, etc).

Over 50% of male adults work as shepherds or in the care of sheep. Another large percentage of the population work in sheep product industries.

When Woolonia was first settled in the 1700's, settlers were amazed to find a huge abundance of wild sheep and goats. At first, they tried to clear them out or find another place without the abundance of sheep and goats. However, they then realized the resources they had and used it to their advantage. By the 1800's wool trading had become big and they had learned how to domesticate the sheep and use them for wool and meat, while using the goats for meat, milk and cheese.

Later, as the world around it modernized, Woolonia developed in an interestingly unique way- It remained very sheep centered, but the cities urbanized and developed around it. Even today, uptown Woolport is home to a large sheep meadow instead of a park.

Opposition to Modernization, Civil War of 2013-2014

Woolonia's move into modern life was not exactly unopposed, not even in recent times. In fact in 2013 Woolonian Traditionalist Rebels started a full fledged civil war. Gaining the support of about a third of the nation, rebels tried to overthrow the country's organized government to go back to a simple herding society. After about a year of fighting and war the conflict finally came to a close with about 48000 casualties. The conflict appeared to have stemmed from a government plan to remove many traditional pastures and to replace them with modern communities with a sheep pasture, similar to Sheep Meadows in Uptown Woolport. Rebels struck New Wooley the hardest since that is the location of the seat of government in Woolonia. Woolport remained mostly untouched and is currently acting as the temporary capital as New Wooley continues to recover.

National Flag

The Woolonian Flag represents the hills and pastures the country is known for. It has existed since the early 1800's.

Governmental System

Woolonia is a representative democracy with a Parliamentary Legislature. It is home to three main political parties, the Christian Shepherd party, the Traditional Shepherd party, and the Labor Party and is generally considered a Tripartisan system. However, the Christian Shepherd party dominates most politics, usually for the benefit of the country. Other smaller parties include the Direct Democratic party, the Republican Party, the once popular Woolonian Socialist Association Party (WSA) and the Liberal Freedom Party. The Traditional Shepherd party lost a lot of support after the Woolonian Civil War started by traditionalist rebels, so currently the Christian Shepherd party and Labor party are mostly unopposed.

A pie chart of Woolonian Parties in Parliament.

  Traditional Shepherd Party: 21 seats
  Christian Shepherd Party: 62 seats
  Labor Party: 12 seats
New Woolonia Socialist Party: 3 seats
  Liberal Freedom Party: 2 seats

Like in other parliamentary legislature systems, the Parliament chooses the President.

Christian Shepherd Party

  • currently has 62 seats (supports Christian and conservative policies but with the best interest of the shepherds)

The Christian Shepherd Party arose as the country moved from a socialistic one-party state to a social democracy in the 1980s. The CPA's rise directly corresponded with the fall of the WSA, the Woolonian Socialist Association Party that had dominated politics for sixty years nearly unopposed. The party supports more conservative policies, but generally represents the modern, urban sheep-centered society, in contrast to the Traditional Shepherd Party, which supports a move back towards more traditional ways of life.

Traditional Shepherd Party

  • currently has 21 seats (supports a much more traditional sheep herding society way of life)

The Traditional Shepherd Party fights for the nation to return to traditional herding in contrast to the modern "sheep industry". The TSP wants the government to stop favoring modern herders and sheep industries in major cities over traditional shepherds in the more rural areas. However, the TSP does support the modern Woolonian government, unlike the Woolonian Traditionalist Rebels, a rogue rebel group responsible for the Woolonian Civil War and a supporter of a complete overthrow of modern Woolonian society. The TSP has been hurt more recently by the actions of the WTR, with many Woolonians becoming skeptical of traditionalism after the terrorist-style actions by rebels in recent years.

Labor Party

  • currently has 12 seats (fights primarily for the workers in the sheep industry and the "common man")

The Labor Party is a large advocate for workers in the sheep industry and who they see as the "common man". Their party platform focuses on worker's rights, work conditions, trade, and growing the economy while treating the lower level workers right. The efforts of the Labor Party have helped improve conditions as the country became more capitalist, as labor conditions were pretty bad under the WSA until the 1980s.

New Woolonian Socialist Party, formerly Woolonian Socialist Association Party (WSA)

  • currently has 3 seats (For most of the 20th century, the WSA dominated politics, with the entire country excluding traditionalists supporting a socialist state.)

The history of the WSA can be seen as two different eras. The first era was when the WSA dominated politics and was nearly unopposed. President Weldin Hurdell led the WSA for many years, and became the face of Woolonian Socialism. While technically democratically elected through Parliament, Hurdell was seen as an oppressive dictator of Woolonia throughout the 20th century. Hurdell's successor, Marlo Chasnov, was considered even worse, and helped fuel the eventual fall of the dictatorship. The second era could be considered the modern era after the fall of the original socialist dictatorship. The WSA has changed its stances completely since the fall of the socialist one party state. As of May 13th, 2016, the party was renamed by voters to the New Woolonian Socialist Party, or NWSP, to emphasize the difference from the original oppressive state. The current platform pushes for a shift further towards modern socialism in contrast to the shift towards capitalism.

Direct Democratic Party

  • currently has 0 seats (most shifted to agree more with representative democracy, with most supporters shifting to the Christian Shepherd Party)

Liberal Freedom Party

  • currently has 2 seats (supports extremely liberal policies, which are generally very unpopular overall)

The Liberal Freedom Party supports very liberal policies. Woolonia's generally conservative culture has made it very hard for the Liberal Freedom Party to catch on.

Republican Party

  • currently has 0 seats (most shifted to agree more with representative democracy, with most supporters shifting to the Christian Shepherd Party)

More info will come soon.
