An overview over the administrative structure of the Republic of Kojo. (some changes still to be carried out in mapping)

This article aims to give a comprehensive overview over all official administrative subdivisions in The Republic of Kojo.

Types of divisions

adm. level description number political autonomy
Kojo 2 The country 1 most
Iki 4 Regions 13 none, execute orders from central government
Sur 6 cities > 100.000 inh. XXX local elections for mayor, city parliament with limited power

Pang (urban) 9 neighbourhood, suburb XXX varying by city
Pang (free) 9 town XXX varying by township
Pang (rural) 9 one or several villages XXX varying by township
Pang (dependent) 9 very small villages, sparsely populated areas XXX very few, in many regards act like neighbourhood of the superior, allocating town
Jūwaéi 10 varying by Pang either small city quarter, small neighbourhood or single village XXX none

Iki

The 13 regions of Kojo are called Ikis. They are listed here. Ikis are used to subdivide the national government's services such as police, regional planning or conservatism into more effective local units. However ikis don't hold any sovereign power, there are no regional elections and the prefect is appointed by the national government, just as other administrative personal and funds.
Ikis are further subdivided into Surs and Hibus (usually into several, with the exception of the "city state" ).
Ikis form an important link between the national government on one side, and local cities and townships on the other side. On the Iki level, those two meet and need to strike a balance in their (narrowly defined) competencies, as most issues handled at regional level often are of shared or joined responsibility of the local municipal governments and the national level.

the -iki suffix is spelled with a lower case "i" both in the Ingerish transliteration and the Kojolese alphabet. The hyphen "-" is only used in Ingerish, in Kojolese the iki suffix directly follows the place name without an empty space.

Sur

Sur translates to "City", and is used to further subdivide the 13 Ikis. All settlements above 100 000 inhabitants in Kojo constitute an own, urban Sur. The remaining areas of an Iki are referred to as rural. In those rural surs, usually several smaller settlements are grouped together to form such a "rural city unit". The administrative duties of rural and urban Surs does differ only slightly, for example the employment title of government officials and other authorities change. E.g, an urban Sur such as Pyingshum elects a mayor, while rural communities elect a local chief. Generally, municipalities are the only administrative subdivision in Kojo with actual competences and local elections. People in Surs elect a city council as well as a mayor.

Only some Surs, especially the ones larger than roughly 300 thousand inhabitants, are subdivided into Dengshōs. Both Dengshōs and Surs without them are then further subdivided into Pangs.

The -sur suffix is spelled with a lower case "s" both in the Ingerish transliteration and the Kojolese alphabet. The hyphen "-" is used in the Ingerish transliteration as well as in the Kojolese original.

Hibu

Hubi translates to "rural division", and is used to further subdivide the 13 Ikis. In these rural areas, usually several smaller settlements are grouped together to form such a "rural city unit". The administrative duties of rural Hubis and urban Surs does differ only slightly, for example the employment title of government officials and other authorities change. E.g, an urban Sur such as Pyingshum elects a mayor, while rural communities elect a local chief.

Generally, municipalities are the only administrative subdivision in Kojo with actual competences and local elections. People elect a body similar to a city council as well as a local chief. A Hibu is usually named after its "main town", which in many cases is the largest town in the area and hosts the Hibu's public services and administration.

The -hibu suffix is spelled with a lower case "h" both in Ingerish and Kojolese. The hyphen "-" is used in the Ingerish transliteration as well as in the Kojolese original.

Dengshō

Sengshōs are used to divide some larger Surs into a couple of subdivisions, before these Dengshōs (which is roughly equivalent to "borough") are then subdivided into neighbourhoods, the Pangs.

Dengshōs are amongst other things used to localise larger cities' public services. Although they do not have to be included in postal addresses, postal code areas often follow their borders.

In Pyingshumand Finkyáse, the Dengshōs serve as "cities inside the cities", with their own elected Borough-boards and local "mayors", and an independent budget. For example they have some competencies in the area of road construction, amenities, ordinances, building permits etc. In other cities with Dengshōs such Borough-boards are either nominated by the city council based on the local election results of the last municipal election, or do not exist at all.

The -Dengshō suffix is spelled with a upper case "D" both in the Ingerish transliteration and the Kojolese alphabet. The hyphen "-" is only used in Ingerish, in Kojolese the place name and the following "Dengshō" are separated by a space.

Pang

Pangs are used to subdivide the Dengshōs of some large Surs, smaller Surs directly, as well as rural Hubis. Therefore, in large cities Pangs are usually only a few square kilometres large (where they can be seen as neighbourhoods), while in rural communities they can be much larger (where they usually encompass either one to a hand full of villages or a single town with up to 100,000 inhabitants). Depending on whether a Pang of a Hibu contains a settlement over 10,000 inhabitants, or just a number of small villages (each less than 10,000), they can be further classified as either "free" or "rural". A free Pang (aka a town with 10,000-99,999 inhabitants) has a slightly more united city governance than the rural Pangs, which usually consist of several smaller settlements. In some peripheral regions, very sparsely populated areas where only a few thousand people live spread out over a big area are declared as "dependent" Pangs. These Pang are subordinate to another, usually free Pang nearby. While they retain most of their political autonomy, most government services are provided by the allocating town, whereof it functions nearly like a slightly autonomous neighbourhood. Pangs are usually used as the lowest level of subdivision for every major political party, civic participation, public services (post offices, police stations etc), travel guides, fine-tuned policy making etc. While Pangs have no own autonomy, there are sometimes citizen boards elected parallel to the township or city wide legislatives, which represent their areas interest at the city level.

The -Pang suffix is spelled with an upper case "P" both in the Ingerish transliteration and the Kojolese alphabet. The hyphen "-" is only used in the Ingerish transliteration, in Kojolese the place name and the following "Pang" is separated by a space.

Jūwaéi

A "Jūwaéi" either encompasses a small city quarter or block in an urban Pang, a neighbourhood in a free Pang (aka a small neighbourhood in a town with 10,000-99,999 inhabitants), or subdivides a rural or dependent Pang into the couple of villages and small towns that it is made of. For the sake of legibility, Jūwaéis are not mapped nor mentioned in the listing below.

Jūwaéis are the smallest contiguous units for forming electoral districts etc. They also pose as the smallest statistical unit in official publicised data and are the basis for land surveying.
