Air Karolia is the national airline and flag carrier of the Republic of Karolia. As of 2014, it flies to every continent on the planet and serves 67 airports in scheduled flights. Air Karolia also operates a low-cost subsidiary, KAwings.
History
Air Karolia was founded in 1929 as an amalgamation of the Karolia Air Service (chartered passenger flights) and the Karolian Post's air mail division which had been operating mailplanes since 1915. The new company was based at Fontjana aerodrome and initially flew scheduled flights to Säntjana and Vasireii using 8-seater biplanes with mail as cargo. By 1922 they company had a fleet of twelve aircraft, three of which were dedicated mailplanes and the rest mixed passenger and goods, and had included Kyor and the Aguilasi valley as destinations. A flight from Säntjana to Mecyna with a stop in Lapise was initiated the following year.
In 1927 the airline purchased its first 16-seat aircraft with three engines, allowing faster flights and greater loads to be carried. Some of these aircraft continued in freight service well into the 1940s.
In 1954 the airline entered the jet age with the purchase of seven jets which had a 140-seat capacity. These were used to replace the piston-engined craft on intercontinental routes, in some cases nearly halving the flight times.
