The state of 89771 is the first open collaborative state in the Federal States. Like other "blue" territories in OpenGeofiction, all mappers are welcome to edit in the state; however, unlike some other blue territories, there are some restrictions as to what can or cannot be mapped:
* Mapping should be consistent with the other states in the Federal States of Archanta (a modern North American-style mapped in English/"Ingerish").
* New motorways are not permitted, and edits to existing motorways should be only to add detail.
* Any new primary road must have permission from the appropriate regional coordinator. Edits to current primaries should only be to add detail.
* New railways are not permitted except short spurs, yards, crossovers, and double-tracking existing railways. Edits to existing railways should be only to add detail. New passenger stations must have permission from a state coordinator.
* New cities with a population over 100,000 are not allowed; new cities with a population of 50,000-100,000 must have permission from a state coordinator.
* Existing waterways should not be edited except to add detail. (Adding smaller rivers, streams, etc. is permitted and encouraged provided the overall drainage patterns of the state are not affected.)

<!-- Write below this line, please. -->
The project's coordinators are tasked with maintaining the state with these standards and may edit or remove mapping that does not conform.
The "Grand Lakes" system was originally inspired by North America's Great Lakes. They are set of glacially-created, large freshwater seas. I drew them when I first drafted the Federal States in around 2016 or 2017.

In their current forms, they include surrounding territories in the collaborative projects of the Federal States, Ardencia, and Deodeca.
Coordinators
Unlike some other free-to-edit territories, Michisaukee is overseen by a small team of coordinators. The coordinators may delete and alter all mapping in the state in order to keep consistency. For example, a motorway in the shape of a pentagon would be deleted, whereas a motorway spurring off of FS-50 would be downgraded to a primary or secondary road. The coordinators will seek to collaborate with and advise/communicate with mappers in the state as needed.

After some discussion on discord, I wanted to move the conversation here to have a better long-term record of the situation.
Currently, Lithium-Ion is the sole coordinator of Michisaukee; however, the FSA Coordinators and OGF admin team are actively seeking an additional Michisaukee coordinator to focus on the Massodeya City area.

Because some mappers (specifically, myself) want to maintain contours (topo) for territories adjacent to the Lakes, it's important to have the lakes' surface elevations fully worked-out and "canon".
General Plans
The state has mountains in the east and north, which are reminiscent of Appalachia. These mountains decline into plains, which are covered in farms. Massodeya City is the beating heart of the state, a national center for rail, which extends out into the rest of the state. The density of the state is medium-low outside of Massodeya City, with the other major city being the capital Darsons. In terms of Hydrology the main river is the Massodeya River, which flows through the northern half of the state, and is fed by tributaries from the mountains. Other rivers in the south feed into the Molson River.

The Lakes drain northward, along the Alormen River. So in order from lowest to highest, the lakes are as follows:
Massodeya City
Massodeya City is still being planned out, but will be the largest city in the state and a rail hub. It will draw on  Louisville,Columbus and St. Louis. Please ask a coordinator before working on the city or the surrounding area.

* A. Leighton - elevation 159m
Frequently Asked Questions
* B. Unnamed (lower) - elevation 166m
Why can't I map lots of motorways?
* C. Ashani - elevation 172m
* D. Ohunkagan - elevation 178m
* E. Unnamed (upper-north) - elevation 179m
* F. Unnamed (upper-south) - elevation 179m
* G. Sauganash - elevation 188m
* H. Hanyala - elevation 190m
* I. Betaouais - elevation 193m
* J. Amancer - elevation 202m (edited from 195m, based on conversation below)

The two lakes, Unnamed (upper-north) and Unnamed (upper-south) are a Michigan-Huron type system: hydrologically, the same lake, and therefore the same elevation, but with distinct names/concepts in people's minds. Or maybe they have the same name, but that's not how I have been habitually thinking of them.
We want to avoid the state becoming a mess of motorways, and motorways are not needed to map well and to enjoy mapping. We appreciate detailing of the existing motorways in Michisaukee, but not the creation of  tons of motorways around a rural town.

Westhaven is a slightly different case. There has been discussion that it is not part of the same watershed / hydrological system. I would actually prefer that, and I recommend a drainage pattern northward, creating a kind of "heartland watershed" for the Deodeca project. Because of this, it could also have a lower elevation than the nearest Grand Lake. I've settled on this:
Why can't I create a huge city?

* K. Westhaven - elevation 175m
If we let everyone map huge cities, the state would become unrealistic. If you want to map in a big city, feel free to work in Massodeya City or Darsons,  and if you want to work on a medium sized city you can work in one of the county seats.  If you really think you have a realistic and viable plan for a large city, contact the appropriate coordinator.

The current elevations are now attached to the Lakes' relations with ele= tags. Please don't edit these without first noting consensus to change here in this forum discussion.
There's some bad mapping near me, am I  allowed to delete it?

Another point of discussion - we still need to name the two largest lakes, which I've taken to calling "lower" and "upper". I remember quite a bit of discussion about this from a year or two ago, but frankly can't find my notes about it and don't recall where that discussion was recorded. Possibly discord but I thought it had also been recorded in another place (the old wiki?).
The coordinators will attempt to alter, move or delete mapping that does not conform to the rules, but if we've missed something and you want to deal with  it, feel free to do so. However, please follow our etiquette for mapping in blue territories. In particular,  do not delete mapping, especially if there is a mapper is still working in the area. In general, mapping should be improved and altered, not deleted.

I think the level of "churn" in the ownership of nearby territories is such that expecting to ever have a consensus / quorum on naming the lakes is silly - we should just name them and be done with it. So in comments below, please offer thoughts as to names. We'll have some kind of vote I guess. How about on July 15th?
How did you come up with the name "Michisaukee"?

Some of the lakes' elevations are already 100% canon - because I've already been maintaining contour files for adjacent territories (Makaska and Ooayatais). Specifically, Unnamed (lower), Ohunkagan, and Unnamed (upper) cannot be changed. I'm flexible about the others, but they need to of course "fit in" with the already canon ones. So changes to my proposed elevations need to be well-reasoned, but I welcome them below in comments, too.
The name Michisaukee is a (very) loose Ojibwe translation that, perhaps appropriately, means "open land". The name was chosen by popular vote of the FSA stateowners among 12 suggestions submitted. If you'd like more information about the vote, expand this section.

Elevation Discussion
An initial round of voting was opened with these twelve options using a ranked-choice voting model where each stateowner could select their first, second, and third choices; if no option won a majority of votes after the votes were closed, the option with the fewest first-place votes would be eliminated with those ballots re-allocated based on second-choice votes, and so on until one option had a majority of votes. However, after a week of voting and 23 votes received, no option was even on a majority of total ballots, so the top five choices -- all choices that had more than one first choice vote -- were sent on to a second round of voting.
::I think perhaps a slightly larger difference in elevation between Amanecer and Betaouais (J and I) would be reasonable in order to support the existence of the canal as it is currently mapped - perhaps making Amanecer 198m, or 200m would work nicely. This isn't necessary, but I don't think it conflicts with anything else. Aside from that, I agree with Westhaven flowing elsewhere. --Lithium-Ion (talk) 14:40, 5 July 2022 (UTC)</blockquote>

::::I didn't see any locks on the canal, so I assumed it was a shallow slope. :::Actually, I have some good technical reasons to support tagging ele= on all the shoreline ways. Thilo's conversion program, as best I can figure out, can only "see" ele= tags on ways and nodes, not on relations. So having the data "ready to go" on the ways, for quick copy-paste to the contour squares at the time of contour run, is quite convenient. I tag all my shorelines with ele=. Then when I'm ready to run contour conversion, I do a quick download of all ele= tags in the territory and cut-paste those into my contour files. This adds refining detail and precision to the contour conversion process. Hope that makes sense!--Luciano (talk) 04:11, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

I do like the idea of splitting Lakes E and F in two for naming purposes, and while I do like the Mother/Father Lake naming convention idea, I'd also support naming the northern lake Lake Seneppi, just in case the next AR120-54 owner decides not to use that name for the next iteration. --TheMayor (talk) 17:54, 5 July 2022 (UTC)

::I very much like "Lake Wihinapa" for B. Of course, it was my own suggestion. That will be my vote. For E/F, I'm less sure. I like the idea of embedding a linguistic "easter egg" in one of the lakes' names, and thus using my somewhat jokingly suggested "Lake Chajewanicha" for one of them. That would be somewhat in the same vein as the name Ohunkagan, one meaning of which is "fiction" in the Dakota Language. I suppose the way I'd organize voting for this is have separate votes for E/F, but with one of the options for "F" being "This lake is the same lake as E".--Luciano (talk) 14:07, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

Federal States Coordination

Revision as of 17:27, 6 July 2022

The state of Michisaukee is the first open collaborative state in the Federal States. Like other "blue" territories in OpenGeofiction, all mappers are welcome to edit in the state; however, unlike some other blue territories, there are some restrictions as to what can or cannot be mapped:

 • Mapping should be consistent with the other states in the Federal States of Archanta (a modern North American-style mapped in English/"Ingerish").
 • New motorways are not permitted, and edits to existing motorways should be only to add detail.
 • Any new primary road must have permission from the appropriate regional coordinator. Edits to current primaries should only be to add detail.
 • New railways are not permitted except short spurs, yards, crossovers, and double-tracking existing railways. Edits to existing railways should be only to add detail. New passenger stations must have permission from a state coordinator.
 • New cities with a population over 100,000 are not allowed; new cities with a population of 50,000-100,000 must have permission from a state coordinator.
 • Existing waterways should not be edited except to add detail. (Adding smaller rivers, streams, etc. is permitted and encouraged provided the overall drainage patterns of the state are not affected.)

The project's coordinators are tasked with maintaining the state with these standards and may edit or remove mapping that does not conform.

Currently, Lithium-Ion is the sole coordinator of Michisaukee; however, the FSA Coordinators and OGF admin team are actively seeking an additional Michisaukee coordinator to focus on the Massodeya City area.

How did you come up with the name "Michisaukee"?

The name Michisaukee is a (very) loose Ojibwe translation that, perhaps appropriately, means "open land". The name was chosen by popular vote of the FSA stateowners among 12 suggestions submitted. If you'd like more information about the vote, expand this section.

AR120-31 Naming Vote Information

Twelve names were suggested, many of which also had brief etymologies:

 • Elada, a Cherokee word meaning "low"
 • Odalu, a Cherokee word meaning "mountain"
 • Pulchra, a Latin word meaning "beautiful"
 • Deiterra, a Latin word meaning "God-given earth"
 • Galisoda, a Cherokee word meaning "house" or "home"
 • Eskamishee, a Native American word that translates to "plains"
 • Rahronkas, a Mohawk word meaning "listening land" (the spellings of "Rahonkas" and "Raronkas" were also suggested)
 • Wellensia
 • Memonosee
 • Pekinpapaga
 • Michisaukee, a loose Ojibwe translation of "open land"
 • Oshawaukee, a loose Ojibwe translation of "blue land"

An initial round of voting was opened with these twelve options using a ranked-choice voting model where each stateowner could select their first, second, and third choices; if no option won a majority of votes after the votes were closed, the option with the fewest first-place votes would be eliminated with those ballots re-allocated based on second-choice votes, and so on until one option had a majority of votes. However, after a week of voting and 23 votes received, no option was even on a majority of total ballots, so the top five choices -- all choices that had more than one first choice vote -- were sent on to a second round of voting.
