Fiorino International Airport (WAAT: STN, ANACA: BAST) is Stanton second busiest airport in terms of passengers and number of flights, mostly domestic. Located at 15 miles (24 km) south west of Manheart, the airport serves northern parts of New Carnaby but also neighbor FS States: Penquisset, Arghenna and Aidlenaide. Fiorino is a secondary WestAir hub for the East Coast.
History
Fiorino International Airport opened in 1919 as Lehmann's Farm Airfield, named after Frederick Lehmann (born Friedrich Lehmann in Kalm) who owned the land in the 1870s and 1880s.
When Stanton Airfield in Tosterglope closed in 1928, Lehmann's Farm Airfield took over its traffic and was renamed Stanton Airport two years later (hence its WAAT code STN). In 1932, as the traffic was growing, a new terminal was built in then-fashionable Art Deco style. The terminal with its curved façade and slender windows still stands and constitutes the central part of Terminal 1 (on its landside) built in the early 1950s.
In 1940 the airport was renamed "Staton International Airport", a name it keeps until 1952 when Stanton municipality changed its name to "Fiorino International Airport" to honour Paul Fiorino who had died three years earlier.
By the late 1950s, Fiorino Airport was due to be replaced in the next decade by the new Stanton International Airport. Nonetheless, as the traffic was growing steadily in the 1960s, Stanton International Airport could not cope with the traffic for the whole metropolitan area and Fiorino Airport was left opened but reserved for domestic flights, though retaining its "international" qualification. In 1974, Terminal 2 opened and, in the early 1990s was endowed with an international concourse when the Federal Government authorised FS Immigration to open facilities on a second site in New Carnaby (the other being Stanton International Airport).
Terminals
Fiorino Airport has 2 passenger terminals with a total of 69 gates, 63 equipped with jet bridges and 6 ground-level gates.
Terminal 1
On its landside, the central part of Terminal 1 was built in 1932. The building was enlarged numerous times and consists of three concourses with 39 gates:
- Concourse A has 18 gates (numbered from A1 to A19) equipped with jet bridges.
- Concourse B has 15 gates (numbered from B1 to B16) equipped with jet bridges.
- Concourse C designed for regional aircraft and endowed with 6 ground-level gates.
Terminal is entirely dedicated to services provided by WestAir and subsidiary WestAir Express.
Terminal 2
Terminal 2 was built in 1974, the building underwent a heavy refurbishment when the East Concourse was rebuilt for international flights purposes in the early 1990s. The Terminal consists now of two concourses with 30 gates:
- National Concourse has 22 gates (numbered from 101 to 123) equipped with jet bridges
- Internation Concourse has 8 gates (numbered from 201 to 208) equipped with jet bridges. Gates 206 to 208 were specifically designed fro wide-body aircraft.
Airlines providing service at Terminal 2 include Jazz Air.
Infrastructure
Runways
The airports covers 4.44 sq mi (11.50 km2) and has 3 runways and n helipad:
- 11L/25R: 12,473 feet by 200feet (3,802m x 60m)
- 11R/25L: 8,654 feet by 200feet (2,638 x 60m)
- 19/35: 8,402 feet by 200feet (2,561m x 60m)
11L/25R is primarily used for take-off while 11R/25L is mostly used for landing. Due to prevailing winds from the west, both landing and take-off operations on these runways tend to be performed westward.
19/35 is used in both directions for both landing and take-off of narrow-body aircraft.
