For the purposes of territory, user management and coordination, the OGF planet has been divided into regions. Each region is assigned to a different member of the admin team, that regional manager has wide discretion in how to subdivide, manage, assign, and vacate territories.

Territory applications are made using on the territory application forum, using a standard template to help guide the application. This page gives extra background information.

If you don't know which territory you want, and would like us to make a recommendation, you can also use the territory application forum, filling in as much information as possible to help us to respond.

Antarephia

Gnome-edit-redo-bw.svg See also: OpenGeofiction:Antarephia

The regional manager is PortCal (make requests using the territory application forum)

Rules for new users' first territories

Users may apply for a territory in Antarephia as long as they meet the following criteria:

  • They have spent at least 14 days mapping in a blue territory and can provide examples of original rural and urban mapping they have made;
  • They don't have a history of rule-breaking on this website;
  • They present a plan setting out the basic characteristics of the territory. The plan should include an overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country (preferably in the form of a sketch), as well as a description of the intended culture, language and political system. Antarephia is not directly inspired by any part of the real world, which means applications will be judged mainly based on how well they fit in with existing mapping in the area.

Applications should be submitted via the territory application forum.

Rules for exchanging territories

  • Users moving into Antarephia are asked to follow the instructions for getting a first territory, excluding having to spend 14 days in a blue zone.
  • Users moving out of Antarephia are asked to follow the rules set by the moderator responsible for their new territory.
  • Users looking to move within Antarephia are asked to notify the regional manager, who will assist with choosing a new territory and moving the existing creations.

Rules for upsizing and requesting additional territories

Requests for additional territories and upsizing current ones are judged individually, mainly based on quality of existing mapping, experience and history of behavior on the site. Users are expected to provide basic information about their plans for the requested territory or area.

Rules for downsizing and splitting territories

Downsizing or splitting up territories does not have any pre-established requirements except the approval of the regional manager.

Release of inactive territories

After 3 months of inactivity, users will be sent a reminder message. If they don't respond to it by the date specified in the message (usually 30 days later), their territories will be withdrawn. Users may also be asked to confirm their activity by uploading an amount of new mapping (as specified by the moderator) in order not to have the territory withdrawn. Territories with very little original mapping can be withdrawn immediately after 3 months of the owner's inactivity.

Users may keep their territory during a specified time of absence as long as they notify the regional manager. The maximum time a territory can be paused for is one year.

North and South Archanta

The regional managers for the Archantas are wangi and TheMayor. Applications should be submitted via the territory application forum.

Rules for new users' first territories

Themes

New users may request their first territory after building up experience on OGF, and is subject to the following points:

  1. No history of rule-breaking
  2. Users may be asked to undertake a project to demonstrate their readiness to take on the territory
  3. Outline a plan for the territory (culture, language, climate), appropriate for the continent and neighbouring territories.
  4. No other territory request in process

Rules for exchanging, upsizing, or downsizing territories

There are no special rules for exchanging, upsizing or downsizing territories. Send a request to admin describing the change you would like and this will be handled on a case by case basis.

Rules for additional territories

Additional territories are held to strict standard. Currently mapped territory must be at least 50% 'full' and show evidence of verisimilitude, completeness, and creativity. Likewise there should be a well considered plan for the requested territory.

Rules for release of owned territories

Users who are inactive for more than 3 months will be notified and territories released after the given deadline, unless editing resumes.

If users are not making visible progress on existing territory, and/or cannot provide a long-term plan, they may be asked to downsize, either by subdividing their territory and abandoning part, or by moving to a new, smaller territory. Users are also expected to be flexible for ongoing rationalisation of the continent, to increase realism.

Wide latitude will be granted for leaves-of-absence in the event these are negotiated ahead of time.

Beginner

The regional manager for the Beginner territories is wangi. Applications should be submitted via the territory application forum, new users should first request a wiki account.

These territories are small, intended as an opportunity to build up mapping experience. They are not for long-term mapping and are considered "non-canon" within the OGF world. The New User Practice and Demo Zone can be mapped in without permission. Mapping must be focussed and independent - you are not collaborating with other mappers across territory boundaries.

Rules for new users' first territories

New users may request their first territory after a short period of mapping in the BG01 New User Practice and Demo Zone. It will be granted "no questions asked" provided

  1. the user has no history of rule-breaking (vandalism, sockpuppeting, etc.)
  2. the territory being requested is classified as "beginner" (see green territories on the map at the right)
  3. the user is only clearly requesting one territory - this rule exists because there is a frequent problem of users requesting multiple territories before admin has a time to respond - have patience.

There is no need to go into detail in the request.

Rules for exchanging territories

Users are encourage to use these territories to build up their mapping skill and graduate on to requesting a territory within the other regions.

Rules for additional territories

A Beginner territory cannot be held if the user has another territory.

Rules for release of owned territories

Users who are inactive for more than 3 months will have their territories released, without prior warning.

Tarephia

Gnome-edit-redo-bw.svg See also: OpenGeofiction:Tarephia

The current regional manager is: Taka. Applications should be submitted via the territory application forum.

Rules for new users' first territories

  • They have spent at least 14 days mapping in a blue territory and can provide examples of original rural and urban mapping they have made;
  • They don't have a history of rule-breaking on this website;
  • They present a plan setting out the basic characteristics of the territory. The plan should include an overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country (preferably in the form of a sketch), as well as a description of the intended culture, language and political system.

Additional territories, territorial expansions and exchanges can be requested through the territory application forum. Requests for additional territories and upsizing existing territories will be considered on a case-by-case basis, but the mapping in the user's current territory should show evidence of verisimilitude, completeness, and creativity. For exchanging territories, you must still adhere to the rules of the continent you are moving onto, whether that be Tarephia, or another. Users looking to exchange territories within Tarephia are asked to notify the regional manager, who will assist with choosing a new territory and moving the existing creations.

Rules for downsizing and splitting territories

There are no requirements to downsize or split a territory, but do notify the regional admin before making any such changes.

Rules for purge of owned territories

  • Users who are inactive for more than 3 months will be reminded of their possession. If they don't respond to it by the date specified in the message (usually 30 days later), they will be evicted.
  • If circumstances imply you will not be able to actively edit for an elongated period of time, please contact the regional admin, to see if an exception can be made.
  • Users who are not making visible progress on existing territory may be asked to downsize, either by subdividing their territory and abandoning part, or by moving to a new, smaller territory.

East Uletha

The regional manager is Leowezy. Applications should be submitted via the territory application forum.

Before submitting an application, please consult OpenGeofiction:East Uletha.

  • They can present a significant amount of mapping in a blue territory and can provide examples of original rural and urban mapping they have made;
  • They don't have a history of rule-breaking on this website;
  • They present a plan setting out the basic characteristics of the territory. The plan should include an overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country (preferably in the form of a sketch), as well as a description of the intended culture, language and political system. Applicants are encouraged to reach out to the regional admin before posting a territory application if they are unsure about the location of their future territory.

Rules for upsizing and requesting additional territories

Territory expansions and second personal territory applications (that is, territories in addition to one personal and up to two collaborative territories) in general are judged on a case-by-case basis. As a guideline, users applying for second territories need to have a considerable portion (>50%) of their current area mapped in at least medium detail as well as several cohesive and significant example of high-detail mapping. For the expansion of a territory by annexing parts of adjacent, unclaimed territories (<50% of that unclaimed territory), users should have mapped an area of equivalent size in their first territory in at least medium detail. When asking for an additional territory or an expansion, please use the same forum process as when applying for a first territory.

Rules for downsizing and splitting territories

Users looking to downsize their territories or divide them into several smaller ones are asked to notify the regional manager before doing so.

Release of inactive territories

After 90 days of inactivity, users will be sent a reminder message. If they don't respond to it by the date specified in the message (usually 30 days later), their territories will be withdrawn. Users may also be asked to confirm their activity by uploading an amount of new mapping (as specified by the moderator) in order not to have the territory withdrawn.

Users may keep their territory during a specified time of absence as long as they notify the regional manager. The maximum time a territory can be paused for is one year.

West Uletha

The current regional managers are: Bixelkoven and Alessa. Applications should be submitted via the territory application forum.

West Uletha is similar to real-world Europe, as well as parts of the Middle East. This means that West Uletha is the place from which most languages have spread throughout the OGF world, including Ingerish (English), Franquese (French), Castellanese (Spanish), Mazanic (Arabic) etc. To keep the cultural coherence of the continent, please refer to the guideline map provided on the OGF:West Uletha page - however we're open for other proposals, should you have any.

West Uletha is meant for more advanced users or users with a background in fictional cartography, who can map more individually and at their own pace, but also show great collaborative instincts. Being open to your current and potential neighors is a prerequisite for owning a territory in West Uletha. Likewise, there's great deal of smaller territories which are available for new mappers who have shown solid mapping skills and understanding in the beginner territories. There's plenty of collaborative projects, which can be found on OGF:List of collaborative projects#Uletha.

About this image

West Uletha is split into 17 sectors (as shown on the clickable map to the right), numbered from 1-17, which designate areas with cultural similarities. These can be identified in the first two digits of West Ulethan territory codes (for example: UL17x is a territory in sector 17, the Iviran Coast region).

Users can request territories in West Uletha if they meet the following criteria:

  • For new users: The user has mapped for at least 7-14 days on a blue territory of his choice, showcasing his mapping style and skill in both urban and rural mapping.
  • The user has no history of rule-breaking (vandalism, sockpuppeting, etc.);
  • The user plans on basing his mapping on European or Middle Eastern cultures (or, in special cases, has created an isolated culture which would fit into the cultural landscape of Western Uletha) - see OGF:West Uletha for culture suggestions for available territories;
  • The user uses the JOSM editor (in special cases this can be neglected);

If a proposal fits in West Uletha and the user meets the requirements, it will be accepted directly. If not, it will be followed by counter proposals from the regional manager.

Rules for additional territories

For additional territory requests, you generally must present a realistic, original and contiguous zone of high detail in each territory you own, about 15-20%, or cover 66-100% (at least 2/3) of your territory in an intermediate and/or acceptable level of detail. For advanced users and users with potential, this rule could be neglected. Contact the regional administrator for more information.

Rules for exchanging, upsizing, or downsizing territories

  • If you want to exchange your territory or move it to Western Uletha, as well as within the continent, you need to follow the instructions given in the territory request segment above. If you have moved a couple of times already in a short period of time, we will not approve your request.
  • If you want to exchange your territory or move it away from Western Uletha, contact the admin responsible for the area you want to move to. They will provide you with information on how to proceed.
  • If you want to request an enlargement of your territory by requesting an available neighboring territory, you are required to submit a territory application for it and showcase your plans with the new territory. For territory enlargements, you generally must present a realistic, original and contiguous zone of intermediate and/or acceptable level of detail, about 66-100% (at least 2/3) of your territory. Contact the regional administrator for more information.
  • Downsizing or splitting up territories does not have any requirements except the approval of the regional manager.

Rules for purge of owned territories

Users who have not/barely made any edits in 5 months will be reminded of their possession. If they remain inactive for one more month, they will be evicted. Highly detailed territories have the potential to be marked as archived and uneditable by anyone else in the future.

Users who don’t make a visible progress in mapping their territories or struggle managing it as a whole will be asked to either downsize or move their mapping to a smaller territory.
