Hi! 2017 is almost over. And since the end of December also marks my 18 month anniversary of joining this website, I feel like it's a good time to briefly look back on the stuff I made this year.

Let's rewind

Oh by the way, have you seen the Youtube rewind this year? I can't help but feel so detached from everyone and everything featured in it. I promise there's no John Oliver, fidget spinners, slime, that song from Shrek or the Paul brothers in the post below.

We don't talk about 2016. I described the year in my July 3rd entry. Basically I joined OGF, made tons of beginner mistakes, placed the capital city of Drabantia on the tip of a peninsula, then in 2017 I had fun deleting everything I'd done the year before.

Moving the capital city

The old city was unrealistic. I tried hard to avoid all the mistakes I had made before when drawing Odrava - I laid the city out on paper, even. You can read more in the bliki post from week 16. However some ten days ago I did delete most of the city center and started again.

Rabětín, May, in bliki week 21
Přeslav, June, in bliki week 24
Podbořice, October, in bliki week 44
Dránský Brod, October, in bliki week 44

Sometimes I just feel like drawing on paper. And I found out that drawing small towns on paper first can actually be beneficial - you can lay everything out in a large area, you have a better sense of scale, you can simply erase things that feel wrong and start over, and when you're done you can put your map on the fridge and your mom will be proud of you.

So I drew four towns this way this year.

Macro mapping

Probably my favorite way of mapping. If you're not familiar, it's the opposite of micro mapping: one only draws the most important features such as forests, roads, water and residential areas. It's simple, quick and satisfying.

The first area I mapped like this was Ráj nad Mlžnicí in January. It is a mountainous area with a lot of forests and wetlands. I was really happy with it. It is my oldest work here that I'm not ashamed of.

Since it was such a success, in March I followed up with Volbrod - a flatter, warmer area full of orchards and ponds.

In May and June it was the surroundings of Odrava.

Last but not least, my biggest project this year was the 157 kilometer long railway I described in week 50. I've described it to death before, so here, have one map at least:

Plans for next year

  • In January I would like to continue working on Odrava. I want to draw a nice historical center, rework the suburbs, the railways, topography and last but not least, reopen the question of whether Odrava needs a subway.
  • In February I'll move from Odrava to the broader region around the city. Maybe I'll draw a town or two.
  • For March I have a small collaborative project in mind. Stay tuned.
  • The bliki goes on.

Looking back at it, I actually did so much this year. I'm glad to have found this website, and also thankful for all the new friends I made.

Maybe 2017 wasn't the best year worldwide. Maybe you've lost a loved one, or had a really hard time career-wise, or you were just tired and stressed in general. Maybe your 2017 was actually the best year so far, in which case, awesome! I'm happy for you. Whatever it may be, I wish you a great 2018. Take care.

Comments are v welcome

are you a rewind baby with so much to lose and no present?
I hate the 2017 rewind. It was (IMO) a s**tload of memes just stuck together with no meaningful content in it. The first one (2015) was the best. As for your plans, after the finishing the railway, I also wanted to work on Lorava's southern part, which I realised was unrealistic. I want to turn it into a sort of Mala Strana for Lorava. Congrats on 18 months, Drabantia is and probably will remain my favourite land on this fictional earth. --Michal (talk) 14:05, 25 December 2017 (CET)

Wait, wasn't 2012 the first? I think I liked the 2013 and 2014 versions the best. Anyways, thank you and good luck with Lorava! --Eklas (talk) 09:43, 26 December 2017 (CET)

As I said many times before, I think your work on OGF is absolutely great, your mapping skills are really impressive! Especially the rural areas look very cool, I'm not that sure about the new look of Odrava though, I really liked the old one... well, I guess with the time you'll Make Odrava Great Again, right? anyway, about the Youtube Rewind, I'll have to totally agree with Michal, it's just garbage, well, Youtube 'per se' got kinda irrelevant this year --Stjur (talkOGF) 21:09, 25 December 2017 (CET)

Drabantia, and Odrava per se is my city, and you know we stay litty. --Eklas (talk) 09:43, 26 December 2017 (CET)
That one got me! --Michal (talk) 11:02, 26 December 2017 (CET)
