So for most users, railways are a headache, or so it seems. I can't say the same, after all most of my country is built around railways. Odrava, the capital city, is no exception. I've already described the city's peculiar railway situation to death (April 24th, August 14th, September 18th) but recently, as I'm redrawing the city, I realized I'd have to start from scratch again. I hear all of you yelling "You should have known" and guess what, you're right. My bad, I made a mistake. But mistakes help you grow as a person (too much pathos yet?) - and a mapper. Here's Odrava railway network, version 2.

After drawing the behemoth that is the New University Hospital last week, I just really wanted to draw something modest this time. And I did... create a 17-track passenger station serving trains in 7 main directions. I don't know about you, but it definitely screams modesty to me!

I don't know how long you've been following my bliki, and the least I want to do is write another exhausting novel about railways in a fictional city, so here's just a couple things that have changed: (zoom out on the map)

  • the old central station in the south is now called Odrava-Nové Město
  • there is a new station northwestern of the old town, Janovo nádraží, serving trains in the direction of Dránský Brod and Velké Poříčí
  • the old Janovo nádraží is now temporarily called Banujské nádraží and will likely move to a completely different city (or even country?) soon - it's redundant

The main issue here was that the railway network didn't make much sense. Both of the large stations were far from the city center. I've tackled the problem I guess. I have rerouted all tracks from the east and south into this new terminus.

I'm obviously now faced with an entirely different problem: how practical is a terminus station? And is it big enough? I think it's going to be alright. Most train routes end in Odrava anyway. Some real world cities have railway termini too - e.g. Munich or Leipzig, Germany - and they're doing okay. In case of accidents or congestion, some trains can use the substitute terminus in the west or the former main station.

You may also notice a lack of depots or service facilities near the new central station: they have yet to be laid out. The purple triangle titled zázemí DBD is reserved for them. But honestly, that whole area feels kind of odd, so that might change.

All in all, what do you think? Is this a step back or forth? How do you like the new look of the city so far?

And now, architecture

It wouldn't be me and my bliki if I didn't write a few lines about the station building itself. It comes from 1842 - that's when the Odrava - Krále Hora railway was opened, and has been expanded several times since. Today, it serves trains going in 7 directions.

The central part is the departure hall, a historical wooden pavilion with cast iron pillars and four large skylights in the roof. There are two buildings surrounding it. They're three-story, built in the renaissance revival style but only with a moderate, sober amount of stucco decoration. Their facades are creamy yellow, windows dark brown and they have dark brownish-grey mansard roofs.

The most notable expansion happened in the 1970s, when a pedestrian underpass was built. It allows passengers to get to public transport stops straight from the platforms. In the underground, there are a couple shops and... are those subway entrances? Stay tuned, I'll talk about that the next time.

Hm... Although I agree that old central station was a bit redundant (but honestly most of existing in RW and OGF terminus stations are redundant) it had much better location. New main station caused a problem with usage of terrain around, for example this place is the worst place to live in the whole Odrava - all day and night you hear the trains and filling up a glass of water is a risk of having wet pants. But the new station itself looks nice and seems to have the right size, for example in Łódź (the city of size of Odrava) terminus station has only eight tracks of which four are unused so even if Drabantia is more railway friendly than Poland (well, probably is), sixteen tracks is enough. --Rüstem Paşa Discussion 20:07, 12 February 2018 (CET)

I just have to point out that the Łódź Fabryczna terminus will no longer be a terminus station - there will be a railway tunnel through the city, starting at Fabryczna, so there is a reason for those additional platforms. Still, the Odrava hl. n. is a little big too huge. And the place you linked seems like a nice place for railfans, I would absolutely move there if I lived in the OGF world, hehe ;) . --Trabantemnaksiezyc (talk) 20:44, 12 February 2018 (CET)

I thought I was literally the only one on this website who has no idea about railways :o Anyway, your work this week is, once again, amazing... Love the detail so much! Couldn't help noticing that Idéal supermarket in the pedestrian underpass :D One small remark though: from an urban point of view I feel like the train station building and the entire area are way too small and less imposing than in most RW central European capitals or big cities, you've mentioned the one in Leipzig, that's what I'd imagine an Odravan central station to look like. I think we're all faking it until we make it Stjur, and I doubt Eklas is the exception xD Personally Eklas, if you say you're planning a small tutorial for all of us, it's gonna be amazing help for sure, and I thank you very kindly :P Your station does look great though! And I spotted that underground arcade! I think this new old station looks very good and realistic, the details are amazing. Terminus stations are very common in European cities and I don't see it as a problem and it is very realistic (Paris has 7 terminus stations for example). From the urban point of view, I must agree with Stjur. Public spaces around the station seem a bit narrow especially in front of the main building. --Tparigo (talk)

When I browse the map, I often come across places that would have been flawless, if it wasn't for some awkwardly drawn railway tracks and stations. The most frequent problems seem to be the mapping techniques themselves - uneven curves and poorly drawn junctions. The guide at the Help and resources portal doesn't mention that at all. I am definitely no professional, but I try my best and want to see other users improve at drawing railways.
Now for the station. First of all, thank you all a lot, I did put effort into it. About the space - I did it on purpose. I intentionally left only a small plaza in front of the building. The station was built in 1842, not long after the city walls were torn down, and in a time when few people cared about urbanism. I know there definitely could be more space, but on the other hand that's why I drew the underground passages, it's so people could get off the train and walk directly into the subway station without crowding at the plaza above. --Eklas (talk) 14:37, 13 February 2018 (CET)

Nice work on the railways. Really puzzling over how railways in the RW can cut through easily. Japanese cities really have a jumble of different railways and yet the cities are still quite well planned. I have plans for a future railway network in Singkangia, but I think I'd rather leave it one side first since it is really tough to improve and detail on it. So far, I have already drawn the major lines throughout the country. By the way, congratulations on managing to translate the FAQ into Czech.
