I can't find a list of place names like seas from the new wiki. Are the names that were decided on the old wiki staying in use and if so, can they be found anywhere? The old list for continents and oceans includes a lot of names for different seas. I assume they could be mapped if someone has the time to do that. Just wondering this as I try to think of things that maybe could be rescued from the old wiki.

As I assume they should be mapped anyway, what is the standard way of doing that on OGF? I assume place=sea isn't rendered as on OSM for example North Sea isn't named even though it's searchable. So in fact, a wiki list might be more useful than mapped data, if the data isn't visible on the map. I know natural=bay is rendered, but not all seas are bays. Hidden sea names are a struggle to find, as we lack a search function and the standard way to map seas is a single node (on OSM standards even though some use areas). Finding a single unrendered node is almost impossible while an unrendered area would be findable if it included every piece of coastline around it.

So I guess the question is, will this information be available on the new wiki? If not, I feel we should discuss on how to map seas that are not bays etc. so that the names would be findable. - Eevee (talk) 01:22, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Although I'm not an authority on this, I'd imagine that as something directly related to the map, that wiki article should be brought over in some form - perhaps as an "Index:" with an additional multimap to go along with it. --Lithium-Ion (talk) 02:46, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
A catalogue of major bodies of water (seas, oceans, etc.) is going to be imported and fully updated. A lot of localized names (gulfs, bays, inland lakes) that border only a couple of countries are potentially up for debate about changing, in my opinion. Much like other things that we're working to set up on the new wiki, it will need some major updates and is planned to be more interactive (like the multimap). — Alessa (talk) 02:55, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
