ForumsTerritory application → Territory application/UL15b - Dolnohorsko

Note: if at all possible, I would like the existing mapping on UL15b to be cleared. Most of it is done in Slovak, which isn't really what I'm going for. If it was edited, I would like to keep the shape of the coastline and country border.

An overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country. It is advised to also create a sketch, you can add a link to this (hosted on imgur or similar)

Dolnohorsko is a temperate country. Its climate is similar to the more northern parts of Germany and Poland.

The country is split roughly in half by a mountain range (shown with a black line in the attached image). The eastern half of the country (Dolsko) consists of mostly flat terrain, with some hilly areas up north near the borders. The western half of the country (Horsko) is considerably more hilly, with the exception of the areas near the southern coast.

Invest - The Noun Project.svgHuman geography
A brief description of the territory demographics, economic development, land occupation, infrastructure and mapping style

Dolnohorsko has around 5.5 million inhabitants, split between its two historical countries and its autonomous capital region.

The capital (Veslany) is a city located at the coast of the southern lake. It borders both historical countries, serving as a hub and a neutral ground for the citizens of Dolnohorsko. It has around 0.6 million residents.

The eastern historical country of Dolsko has around 3.3 million inhabitants. Dolsko has a lot of agriculture due to its flatter geography, especially in south. Manufacturing is also prevelent.

The western historical country of Horsko has around 1.6 million inhabitants. Horsko is a significant source of wood and ore. Due to its hilly nature, towns tend to be smaller and less connected.

There's an amount of wealth disparity between Dolsko and Horsko, with Dolsko more prosperous than Horsko.

The mapping style is based on central Europe. Most specifically Czechia.

A brief description of the intended culture and language

The culture is based on the Czech historical regions of Moravia (represented by Dolsko) and Silesia (represented by Horsko).

The language of Dolnohorsko is Czech, with some changes to reduce some of the German influence on the language. This is to bring the language closer to the dialects spoken in Moravia and Silesia (since there is no representation of Bohemia) and also to reflect the fact that there are no German-speaking countries near UL15b. In-universe, the language could be considered a dialect of Drabantian - Dolnohorská Drabantština.

Dolnohorsko is a union of two historical countries, Dolsko and Horsko. The capital is its own region with a degree of autonomy comparable to the historical countries. This arrangement is similar to how Belgium works.

To support your request provide links to areas of OGF mapping which showcase your mapping skill. Mapping relevant to the requested theme & geography is especially useful
The {{coord}} template can optionally be used to link to the OGF map - it results in a nice formatted link. Or you can paste in a URL.

Here is an example of my mapping: https://opengeofiction.net/#map=14/12.7142/-113.9273&layers=B

The two most detailed areas I have worked on are Předonice and Strahov. Předonice is a small Moravian-like town, while Strahov is an attempt at making a smaller city. Strahov hasn't been finished. I intend to copy parts of these areas into Dolnohorsko. The other towns around this area are mainly "skeletons" of small towns, representing their general layouts.

Another mapping example: https://opengeofiction.net/#map=15/12.8406/-113.9302&layers=B

This is a small village in the middle of a hilly area, representative some of the kind of mapping I would like to do in Horsko.

Discussion for clarification & decision

  • Hello, Aglet. Your territory application is okay, Czechian makes sense at the location you are requesting, your cultural understanding of the area is much appreciated. The population of 8.5 million is quite large for the area. A comparable country on the same latitude as UL15b would be Lithuania, which has a population density of 44 p/km2 (yours would have 172 p/km2). Neighboring Drabantia has/had a density of 121 p/km2. I would request you to lower the population to suffice a population density of anything between 80-120 p/km2. The geography you provided seems pretty basic. Secondly, your mapping is satisfactory, there's plenty of room for improvement (notably, I'd suggest you to use more nodes in your ways and areas). Before making a decision, I would like to see some rural mapping from you. Please come back to this request and share your progress when you are happy with submitting it. Until then, this request will be put on hold. ⸺ Bixelkoven (talk) (West Uletha Admin) 15:51, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
  • Hi! Sorry for the delay. I was dealing with university exams. I reduced the population to just 5.5 million, which should be around 110 people/km^2, if I got the math correctly. I have changed the other numbers in the application accordingly. I have attached a new link to the past mapping section showing a new area in the beginner teritorries that I have mapped. As for the physical geography, it's mostly a rough outline. I will certainly experiment with it during mapping to create some interesting areas.
