Forum:Announcements/Turning off Basic Authentication

From OpenGeofiction

The major site update in September enabled OAuth 2 authentication for OpenGeofiction, however we had to re-add support support for Basic Auth due to issues with JOSM. This work around has also reduced the speed of map uploads.

Good news: JOSM 19678 was released today. With it the fully automatic OAuth 2 authorisation flow works:

JOSM server settings
  1. Open JOSM preferences
  2. Select "OSM Server"
  3. Select https://opengeofiction.net/api in the "OSM Server URL" field and hit "Validate"
  4. Hit "Authorise now (Fully automatic)"
  5. Your default web browser will be loaded with an authorisation page on OpenGeofiction, hit "Authorise"
  6. Return to JOSM, you can now upload to OpenGeofiction
Authorise JOSM

The support for legacy Basic Auth will be turned off on Thu 3 Dec 2026, but it is worth enabling soon as possible to take advantage of the better upload experience.
