Forum:Global and regional issues/Naming "Tarephian Lake D"

From OpenGeofiction

Hello all, considering how there are a handful of territories bordering Tarephian Lake Dƨ now, I think it's time to discuss its potential names among nearby mappers, including all Tarephian territory owners.

I'd be nice to see name suggestions from a variety of territory owners, and then maybe some voting system could be made.

My first suggestion roughly translates to "connector/path of all lands," derived from jsial elp khadsm hokm /ʃiːäl ɛlp kħaːɖʂm ħɔkʰm/, which transformed into the modern name Jiallafajamam /ʒʲalːafaʒamam/ after some phonological evolution. It may be a bit of a mouthful though.

I think that in this situation, there would be multiple different names from different groups, however potentially after a common colonialist name was created, in the post-colonisation era the common name would be changed into something else.

In IRL:Wayuu (spoken in eastern Apuremia and Laubaya), the word for 'sea' is 'barana', which could be a new contender for the name.

I agree that colonial resentment would probably result in the disuse of colonial names. Since Wayuu transcends 2 nations it seems that Barana is a pretty strong candidate; it also wouldn’t have to be changed to fit Raqari phonology or that of many other languages.

Just to add that Laubayan is only inspired by Wayuu, so I am fine with everything that you will come up with. Barana is fine although since Laubaya's capital is located on the lake to its south, Barana could very well apply to that lake too, from Laubaya's point of view. Lake D could be something like 'north sea' in Laubayan.
