Kaarti, officially the Republic of Kaarti (Kaartian: Kárti, Kártin tasawalta, Kaartian pronunciation /ˈkɑːrti/) is a country located in East Uletha, next to Eelanti in the west, UL19a in the north, UL23c in the east and Emerald Sea to the south. Kaarti was first inhabited after the latest glacial period, and the modern Kaartians came to the modern-day area of Kaarti in 1st to 2nd century. The monarchy was established in 1205 with the arrival of Christisism to the pagan (Kansanusko) country.

Etymology

Of Gaermanic origin

The word kaarti means in Kaartian literally guard(s). This suggests that kaarti derives from a Gaermanic word, such as garde. This could have related to the guards (or soldiers) of Kaarti, and later the meaning broadened to the whole Kaartian folk. The similarities of kárti and garde can be also coincidental, and thus there is another theory of the word being of Finnic origin.

Of Finnic origin

The historical usage of the name Kaarti was used of the coasts of Wa̤ino̤la̤. The name later broadened in its meaning to mean the whole country. The coast is bendy towards the capital, which can be described in Kaartian as kári, and this is where the name of Kaarti might come from. In Proto−Finnic kári is kaŋere.

From Kaartian to Ingerish

The Ingerish name for Kaarti is Kaarti. The name comes from the original from the Kaartian one, but written as Caarti (especially in the 15th-19th centuries), but writing it like that is obsolete and historic.

Prehistory

Kaarti’s prehistoric times had begun after the land area of Kaarti became habitable after the last Ice Age, and people moved to live in the south around 10,000 BC. There is though no ceratainty of these people being necessarily Kaartian, and it is highly likely that the Kaartian people came much later. There are only few artefacts left from prehistorical times, most of them being ancient pottery.

The modern Kaartians inhabited the area likely in the first or second century. They came in tribes; these tribes can even be seen nowadays by the different dialects of Kaartians by region. These tribes had a “big man” (Kaartian: pá̤llikko̤) who was the leader of the tribe. This led to the development of agriculture and domestication of animals; before this the tribes were mostly hunter-gatherers living in forests.

Big men were also religious leaders. Natural phenomena were explained to be made by the divine by the big men. This is how the national religion of Kaarti, Kansanusko, began. Holy trees and bare rocks were deemed holy and marked with carvings or rock art. There also were “wísas” (lit. wise) people, who could heal wounds or illnesses or complete religious rituals such as burial.

Kaarti was (and is still) mostly filled with forests.

Big men were very often male, but women have also been found from the cairns where the big men were buried (one person per cairn with big men). With wísases there was no divide between the sexes.

Religion and knowledge spread with poems and singing among Kaartians. Many of these are still sung, and the poetic metres helped them to spead and to be remembered.
