From OpenGeofiction

IMPORTANT NOTE: Religion is a topic that is inherently fraught. Religion is extremely personal to many people, and religious conflicts and religious discrimination more broadly continue to impact the modern world, including users of the OpenGeofiction website. Discussion surrounding these fictional equivalents of real life religious should be approached cautiously, and in many cases ambiguity and non-specificity is the most appropriate option.

This page attempts to provide an overview of the current religious situation on OGF that has developed since the site's inception. Certain core details have by common consensus become canon; these details are marked in bold text.

OGF:Christianity

The OGF equivalent to Christianity is called Christicism (adj: Christic). There is no information and no good consensus on where Christicism originated, though it was likely within West Uletha or Eastern Tarephia. There is no consensus, and there likely will never be, about an "equivalent" for Jesus. The core theology of Christicism is assumed to be equivalent to real life Christianity. Mappers have generally chosen to either reuse saint names or invent their own saints. See here for some very old archived discussions about Christicism. Christicism is very spread out around the globe.

OGF:Catholic

The OGF equivalent to Catholicism is called Ortholicism (adj: Ortholic). There is no clear consensus on the organization of the Ortholic Church(es). Early in OGF history, there were at least two competing centers of the Ortholic Church, in {{node|4830072|St Richards}}, Pretary and {{node|15555643|Peritan City}}, Darcodia. Currently in OGF, these centers are both in unclear stages of development, and the collaborative territory of Furgenia is designed as something of a super-sized Vatican, but has not been canonically established as the sole centre of an Ortholic Church.

OGF:Orthodox

The OGF equivalent to eastern Orthodoxy is called Ekelenism (adj: Ekelan). There is no clear consensus on the organization of this denomination. Autocephalous and/or autonomous churches have been floated in the past. This denomination was originally created by User:Clik, creator of Egani, and thus presumably has its origins within the Eganian/Hellanesian world.

OGF:Protestant

There is no clear consensus on Protestantism in the OGF world. An event similar to the Protestant reformation can be assumed to have happened, along with earlier and later breakaways from the Ortholic/Eklelan churches. The following table is designed to allow people to add protestant denominations that they have used or created that have a substantial presence on the map.

Name Equivalent Denomination (if applicable) Country/Region of Origin (if applicable) Mapping Permission Description
Ingerican Anglicanism Ingrea Has also been referred to as Apostolicism in the past, as well as a number of other variants deriving from Ingrea/Ingerland. Presumably a direct equivalent to the Anglican Church/Anglican Communion. Should be tagged either with ingerican or anglican. Overpass query:

Other Denominations

There are many other denominations that are the original creations of OGF users, which may not fit under the above labels. The below table may be used to list denominations that have a substantial presence on the map:

OGF:Judaism

The OGF equivalent to Judaism is Ibriym(ism?). There is no clear consensus on the origin (both location and history) of the religion, nor has there ever been substantive discussion about it. Naphon is the homeland for Israelite and Jewish people on OGF. Ibriymism is spread out across the globe.

OGF:Islam

The OGF equivalent to Islam is Iman (adj: Imani). The centre, and presumably origin, of Iman is Mazan. Regions with notably large Imani populations include North Tarephia, Ghetoria, the Emerald Sea region, and North Archanta, but the religion is also spread out across the globe. Shia/Sunni etc equivalent divisions do not seem to currently exist, though certain countries differ in their theology, such as Gharbiya.

OGF:Buddhism

There is no clear consensus on the name for the OGF equivalent to Buddhism. The religion is clearly concentrated in North Archanta and southern East Uletha, and it presumably originated in one/both of these continents. Dharmapala has been proposed as a name for Buddhism and/or for Hindu-Buddhism overall and is developing a consensus. An older name for the religion that has been less popular recently is Gautamism. There is currently no clear divide between Theravada/Mayahana/etc.

OGF:Hinduism

There is no clear consensus on the name for the OGF equivalent to Hinduism. There is no clear origin or history, but it presumably originated either the Emerald Sea region, south East Uletha, or North Archanta. Dharmapala has been proposed as a name for Buddhism and/or for Hindu-Buddhism overall, but consensus is still developing between relevant users.
