UL04c - Republic of the Sangria Islands / Ripubleca de las Ilas Sangrìanas (commonly referred to as Sangrìa, or The Sangrias in Ingerish)

Noun Project Map icon 1463108.svgPhysical geography
An overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country. It is advised to also create a sketch, you can add a link to this (hosted on imgur or similar)

Sangrìa is comprised of two main islands: the largest one, Ila de la Corána de la Sahìa (commonly Sahìa) and, to the east, Ila de la Tiára de la Beciána (commonly Beciána). The islands are volcanic in origin, but any activity has long since settled. The islands receive high rainfall with a warm oceanic climate. The highest peak, Monte de Táma, is the remnant of a massive volcano and towers over the island of Sahìa. The mountain has several ridges, the Cresta Grònde being the most prominent one that extends to Sangria Harbor. The islands have an extensive coast with golden sand. Much of the native forest has been stripped away but due to revegetation efforts, forests occupy most of the middle of the island. The coasts are flatter, forming coastal plains, whereas the northern coast is slightly more rugged being closer to Monte de Táma.

Beciána is much smaller and less elevated. It is mainly a raised plateaued island, with low harbours forming on parts of the coast.

Invest - The Noun Project.svgHuman geography
A brief description of the territory demographics, economic development, land occupation, infrastructure and mapping style

Sangrìa will have a population of just under 100,000 people. The majority of these people are of Ulethan descent, tracing back to the colonization of Sangria by Ulethan powers over history. The largest city, Porta de Sangrìa (or just Sangria) will have around 50,000 people. Porta de Sangrìa will reflect the cities of the Azores and other Portuguese islands, with the city revolving around the port, harbour and citadel on a nearby bluff.

The economy of the island has drawn away from sea trade and industrial exporting. The island's idyllic scenery and rich history has allowed it to embrace a large tourism industry, with its coasts now littered with resorts, hotels, and tourist-related infrastructure. It is a popular destination in the summer months for people from Uletha to enjoy the warm weather and beaches. Other economic sectors include agriculture, forestry, financial services, retail, and a small manufacturing/shipping industry.

Land occupation will be urban settlements mainly drawn to the coast, with only small hamlets and villages further inland. The land is mainly left natural (especially in the center and northern coast). Agricultural farmland and forests make up the rest of the land use.

Infrastructure-wise, the island's main highway is a trunk road in the cities and towns, then a primary along the rest of the island. Secondary and tertiary roads connect populations centers together. There is one international airport and seaport, and mainly smaller ports in coastal towns. There are no railways, but a tourism-revitalized funicular railway exists from the capital to the bluffs to its north. There is also a small tram network in the capital, mainly connecting the city center to nearby sites such as the marina, university, etc.

Mapping style will reflect the island's main inspirations, the islands of the Azores, Madeira, Cabo Verde, etc. Natural mapping will be heavily influenced by the land use/cover generated by Arlo using Gaea software.

A brief description of the intended culture and language

The name Sangrìa is derived from a corruption of the name Santa Gracia, the island's patron saint.

Sangrìa, historically important as a crossroads between Mediterranean and Asperic sea trade as well as the stopover for ships heading east through the Kalkaran Straits, boasts a rich history shaped by its strategic location as a pivotal sea trading port. Colonized by both Castellanese and Franquese powers (largely Castellan), its culture reflects a vibrant blend of diverse influences. Established as a trading hub in the 16th century, Sangrìa flourished under colonial rule, witnessing clashes and collaborations between its occupying Ulethan powers.

In modern times, the territory has reaffirmed its identity as an independent state, but still maintains close ties to Castellan as a former colony through shared economic, political, and cultural interests.

User KAB has created a conlang for Sangrìa, with strong influences from Castellenese and Franquese called Sangrianese. The language developed as a common trade lingua franca on the islands formed by immigrants that continues to be spoken by the majority of the territory’s population. It is largely based off of corruptions of Castellanese words and a far minority of Franquese ones. Little to no influences remain from the indigenous language, long extinct. Some observers of the language have described it as a mere dialect of Castellanese, but the islanders as well as many linguistic experts around the world have agreed to classify it as a separate language.

To support your request provide links to areas of OGF mapping which showcase your mapping skill. Mapping relevant to the requested theme & geography is especially useful
The {{coord}} template can optionally be used to link to the OGF map - it results in a nice formatted link. Or you can paste in a URL.

I would like to request this as a second territory.

Hello, Arlo. Thank you for the application. I would like something clarified before continuing. Is this a joint application (co-ownership) for the territory with KAB? If not, to what is the involvement of KAB other than just providing a conlang. I just want to be clear on this as a matter of keeping track of things. Next, are you planning to reuse or repurpose the natural=wood already mapped? If not, I will reuse it somewhere appropriate and strike the islands clean. Thanks! — Alessa (talk) 16:01, 25 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi Alessa, I am requesting for sole ownership, KAB's contribution is the conlang she very kindly provided and any assistance with implementing the language onto the map. I am not planning to reuse the wood mapping already present on the island. Thank you! --Arlo (talk) 22:08, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
SUPPLEMENT: Hi Alessa, I have mapped the islands in Arhet for working on and testing landuse, etc - I wanted to ask and check if the new island I've mapped is of an acceptable size increase from the original island's size? It's not by much but I just wanted to double check - here is an Imgur with 1:1 size comparison: https://imgur.com/a/FUUU9ae --Arlo (talk) 22:21, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. I appreciate the clarifications. My only comment is to feel free to go a little more wild with the conlang. Consider things like the old "Mediterranean Lingua Franca" and "Sabir" languages. Be adventurous here. The more distance from real-world languages in a unique pigdin, the better. All the major Romance cultures on our "mediterranean" would have been present in the area at the time. — Alessa (talk) 23:35, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
