The Kaolin Islands (洘吝) are a group of overseas islands located in the Ardentic Ocean approximately 530km from the northernmost point of North Archanta. The archipelago consists of two major islands – Beiyuan and Nanfeng – along with surrounding smaller islands. Kaolin will be mainly inspired by the Oki Islands, though other inspirations include Penghu, Okinawa and Kinmen.

As part of the Bai project, the islands are managed by zhenkang. Anyone is free to edit on these islands, but please reach out to me first and ask any questions!

Overview

The Kaolin Islands are located at around 36 to 37 degrees north of the equator. As such, the climate is somewhat an inverse of Okinawa and Japan – Bai experiences a more subtropical climate while the Kaolin Islands will have a generally temperate climate. However, due to the warming influence of the sea, the islands will only face milder winters with less snow. The climate of the islands will be much more similar to the Oki Islands of Japan, given the same latitude and geographic location. Other similar islands around the same latitude include Rishiri Island and Rebun Island.

Nevertheless, the islands will still see substantial urban developments, with Gong'an as the provincial capital on the larger main island (Beiyuan). Gong'an can take inspiration from Magong and Okinoshima, with a population of up to 75,000. The overall population of the islands must be no more than 250,000. Much of the island will be farmland, plantations or protected forested areas. Due to its lower population, besides an airport, the islands will not have any railways or motorways.

The islands are populated mainly by those of Kuehongese (Vietnamese) descent due to the islands being a former territory of Kuehong until Bai's colonisation of the Muinon Peninsula. Ulethan powers may attempt to establish settlements, such as forts, but not many manage to control the islands for long. Bai's sovereignty over the islands is affirmed through the 1968 Kue-Bai Mutual Defence and Friendship Treaty. Hence, like the rest of the Empire, the main language on the islands is Baiyu. However, there can still be touches of Vietnamese culture, particularly in the choice of shops and restaurants present on the islands.
