The Territory ID (from OpenGeofiction:Territories, e.g. AR123a) and proposed name of the country |
AR120-28 - Arginia
Physical geography | |
---|---|
An overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country. It is advised to also create a sketch, you can add a link to this (hosted on imgur or similar) |
Arginia appears to be located in an area similar to perhaps Pennsylvania or Vermont geographically. The mountains seem to be an Appalachia equivalent and run straight through the west of the state. Much of the population would live in small towns along river valleys in these mountains. As such it would also be densely forested, and rich in coal. In the centre of the state, the terrain would be hilly and have medium-sized towns and cities. In the east, the land would be flattest. Most people would live in cities in this area, along the large rivers.

A brief description of the territory demographics, economic development, land occupation, infrastructure and mapping style |
Arginia would have first been populated by a Native American people group, which I call the Tacat. They speak/spoke Calta Piina, a conlang I made a while ago. They are the namesake for much of the settlements in the state, but others were established by Europeans. The state can essentially be divided into three parts economically.
The Southeast
The Southeast is the most developed and populated. It borders the metropolis and capital city of Huntington where much of the population commute to. Huntington's suburbs also extend slightly into Arginia. The largest city in the state is also located here - Arching Green. Arching Green developed as a railroad town and benefited greatly from the coal industry coming from the mountains. Another city, and the state capital, Aught, within the megalopolis of Huntington-Aught-Arching Green was established as the main city in the Colony of Arginia during colonial times and as such has a very historic city centre.
The North
The North is primarily made up of rolling plains. The main industry is farming, and towns are not very big. The largest city here is Baughland.
The West
The West is very disconnected from the rest of the state. It is extremely mountaineous. It does, however, have an abundance of coal which is attributed to much of its growth. Winding railways follow narrow valleys to access the coal which formerly carried the country on its back. Since the advent of diesel locomotives, however, it has seen great decline. Less demand and government regulation among other things led to the death of this region. In the early 2000s, there was a major tourism boost to the area which bought in new money and the region is starting to grow again. The largest city in the West would be named Gallery.
Arginia has a total population of 3.2 Million, which is aging. Young people are moving East for more opportunity in cities such as Stanton or Orterrado. Up to 45% of the population live in the North Huntington-Arching Green-Aught area. There are two universities in Arginia, Van Cortlandt University in Aught, opened in 1766 by a Dutch scholar of the same name and the University of Arginia, with campuses in all major cities.
Infrastructure is aging but slowly being replaced all across the state.
History & culture | |
---|---|
A brief description of the intended culture and language |
History
Arginia would have been made a state in 1825. Before then, it was part of another neighbouring state and before that a larger colony (though during colonial times only the very east of the state would have been settled). Aught is the oldest city and was founded by the Ingerish in 1699 on the Wiltham River. Throughout the early-to-mid 19th Century more settlement westward in Arginia would take place. In 1825, when statehood was granted a state capitol was built in Aught.
In 1871, along (whatever the FS equivalent of the Union Pacific Railroad is) a small town was set up called Arching Green, serving Aught. Businesses sprung up quickly in Arching Green. It was incredibly prosperous as the main junction between the East Coast and the coal mining communities of Western Arginia. It is also around this time that Gallery was established as a company coal town. The company would later go bankrupt in 1902, making the town independent.
Arching Green was given city status in 1892. It industrialised quickly throughout the early 20th Century. During the Great War, there were several munitions and weapons manufacturies supplying the army.
The state's growth would stop following the (did the FS have a Great Depression?). Many young people left Arginia to find work, some never to return. In the '50s and '60s as train engines began to switch to diesel and some of the mines began to run dry, the coal industry in Arginia greatly suffered. More government regulation further limited it and the west of Arginia in particular would suffer greatly from this.
In the early 2000s a tourism boost was started in the West, and two national parks were designated. The industry would soon replace coal as the main moneymaker.
Culture
The mountains allowed a distinct culture to emerge in the west and south of the state, which in turn rubs off on the rest in some ways. Small Amish communities exist in the most remote of valleys and the culture of the Tacat people has also been preserved somewhat in the Southwest of Arginia. A distinct Ingerish dialect exists in the state aswell as local customs and folklore. In the East, especially around the megalopolis Huntington-Aught-Arching Green the culture is much more similar to that found in Ponquin or the rest of the East Coast.

To support your request provide links to areas of OGF mapping which showcase your mapping skill. Mapping relevant to the requested theme & geography is especially useful | |
The {{coord}} template can optionally be used to link to the OGF map - it results in a nice formatted link. Or you can paste in a URL. |
I have been mapping for a while. I have a country on OGF called Aldevira which is based on Albania, located here.
On Arhet, an alternative OGF map in which there are very little rules, I have worked on two territories:
Poblacht Fáil (and surroundings) which is very much a work in progress. I have been working on detailing specific regions rather than the whole country so far. My other territory is Scituate (yes I came up with the name myself!), a Massechussets-based colony/state in which I will map time progression starting in 1690 and finishing in the modern day.

Discussion for clarification & decision |
- Thank you for reading! --Veni Vidi Vici (talk) 19:04, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- I do like how this request is looking, however the territory you want current has another application going on here: Forum:Territory application/AR120-08 - Ardelia. So despite being a normal user, I thought it was important to tell you this. RhodeIslandWV (talk) 19:14, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- I should have noticed this! I will move the article to a different territory and change it. --Veni Vidi Vici (talk) 19:36, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- This is the current article. --Veni Vidi Vici (talk) 19:50, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- You link to past BG36 mapping, highlighting you're not proud of it. Can you please tidy this up / delete it. You also refer to your current territory, but do not clarify if this request is for a second territory, or in exchange for it? You've also changed the requested state, without any change to the proposal, so it doesn't hang together - you will also need to supply an outline sketch. Thanks/wangi (talk) 20:49, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- I don't have the resources right now to do an outline sketch but I will be able when I get access to a proper PC. This is a request for a second territory. I moved the article and recycled it, because most of the content works for both applications. I modified it a little bit to fit this new state. I would love to remove the BG territory if you could tell me how. Thanks! --Veni Vidi Vici (talk) 22:15, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- You select the ways/nodes and delete them. Nothing complicated. /wangi (talk) 22:23, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- On such a large scale, I mean. With JOSM's download limit. You are being very diresct and unhelpful. If you don't want to handle this application, perhaps you could delegate it to another admin or something. I'm only trying to get some help applying for a territory. --Veni Vidi Vici (talk) 22:49, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Create a new layer in the file tab, you don't have to worry about having to download existing features. You can trace the state borders and broad strokes you would want to keep. --Fluffr Nuttr (talk) 23:35, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- I've removed what I could from BG36. I couldn't figure out how to delete the contents after tracing the territory, though. I've also included a sketch just now. --Veni Vidi Vici (talk) 12:52, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

- Toys back in the pram please. If an answer frustrates you then how about stepping back and rereading the question you posed. If you are unclear then do not be pissed when you are misunderstood. Also note Fluffr Nuttr trying to be helful, but also misunderstanding your question. The mapping in BG36 wasn't big in scale, no more than a few JOSM downloads, and you appear to have dealt with it without too much issue a short while ago. In general, you should adopt a policy of responsible mapping, tidying up after yourself rather than leaving a trail behind.
- If I was minded to simply shutdown the application I would have, but instead I spent the time trying to tease out information which should have already been provided.
- It will be reviewed again when you supply the sketch and rework the application to take into account AR120-28. Thanks/wangi (talk) 12:58, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- And be mindful of OpenGeofiction:Site policies. "Connaught" in particular isn't going to fly, but in general "be original". Thanks/wangi (talk) 13:03, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'm sorry for getting offended at your answer. I did not know that the edited parts of BG36 were within JOSM's download limit, and you tone seemed passive aggressive and unhelpful. But in future, how might this be done for larger territories? For example if I were to wipe the current contents of AR120-28. I provided the sketch an hour ago, you can find it linked in the application above. I can remove Connaught, thats fine. The application has been reworked to take into account AR120-28. Geographically, the mountains would still be there (just a bit smaller) to the West. Most of what I have included in the application I believe can apply to both. Thank you. --Veni Vidi Vici (talk) 13:47, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

Not approved - the existing level of mapping in your current territory isn't sufficient to gain a second territory. Additionally, if the application were to be an exchange then more evidence of American style mapping would be required. Thanks/wangi (talk) 21:10, 8 January 2025 (UTC) | |
