Luthenia, officially The Kingdom of Luthenia is a well-performing and politically neutral country located in the Eastern Glynian region of West Uletha.
Its official language is Luthenian, but some regions in the south also speak Audrinean and Veltician.

The country spans 69,565 km² (26,859 mi²) and borders Audrinea to the south,
UL15i to the south-west, Vesālija to the west, Saave to the north and UL14a to the east.

Luthenia is a member of the Assembly of Nations and the Egalian Union.
Historically, it didn’t participate in many wars (including not directly fighting in the Great War), but still having some exceptions (as the Six Year war with Vesalija).
Politically, it has remained a centre-left position for a very long time, and also keeping the monarchy instead of switching to a republic.

Etymology

The name Luthenia originates from the old-glynian word "lauta" (meadow) and the common glynian "-ija" suffix.

History gives us a few linguistic variations, such as Lautenija and Loutenia which have been influenced by Audrinean and Veltician languages.

Geography

The land of Luthenia contains mostly flat, sometimes forested lands that cover most of the country. In the south, rivers like the Kamenava and Dista wind through slightly more rugged terrain than the usual. In the far north, near the Saave border, some mountains are present.

Climate and environment

Luthenia's climate is made out of rather harsher winters and warm summers.

In the winter, the temperature peaks at about 15°C and drops to over -6°C. In the mountains, it's way worse, with 11°C max and sometimes even reaching -12°C. During the summer, the flatlands receive temperaturs around from 14°C to 26°C.

Farming has been dominant in the flatlands since ever, beacuse of the rivers and calm landscape. Since the north is covered by stretching taigas, the forestry industry is booming in those regions. Areas near the Dista river are easily flooded when the water level rises, so a series of protection structures are necessary.

It is supposed that the lands of modern-day Luthenia were settled by a mix of Veltic, Glynnic and Egalian tribes that fought over the land near the Dista river for centuries. Studies say the lands could have been first inhabited around 5600 BCE by a proto-audrineatic tribe that looked for better land and a peace of mind. For many years, the people slowly transitioned to more agricultural societies.

During the bronze and iron ages, the Dista and Kamenava rivers saw huge potentials for trade routes, with many villages settled near the riverbanks. Around 115 AD, the first real duchies and principalities form, fighting each other for control of valuable farmland and major rivers.

Medieval period

Around 1025 AD, the biggest and strongest duchy, the Great Upynavis Duchy ruled by Karolis I, decided to invade the other states to create an unified kingdom that would be ruled by just one person. For 14 years, many battles are held, conquering lots of land and finally uniting all the lands that will soon become the Kingdom of Luthenia with the capital in Upynavis.

But with many problems and not very happy people, the kingdom struggles to stay afloat, leading to a split in 1285. It is issued by king Linas II, with the major cities being their own sovereign state. For two centuries, the states have been attacked by their neighbours, with the notable conquest of the southern hills and meadows lead by the Grand Duke Valdaris of Audrinea.

The Audreatic–Luthenian Commonwealth

In the period between the XI and XIV centuries, the grand Luthenian Principality with the head-of-state in Naulenai managed to conquer the riverbanks of Dista and Kamenava, gaining popularity in trade.

In 1579, the principality joined the Grand Duchy of Audrinea to form the Audreatic–Luthenian Commonwealth. It had a joint parliament and elected leadership, which made it one of the most progressive political states in the region of eastern Glynia. With this success, it had been easier to conquer the other sovereign duchies, which had achieved the second unification of the lands of Luthenia, an achievement made before by the Great Upynavis Duchy.

Despite the success, the commonwealth faced many problems, such as disputes over represantation and taxation. But, during its first decades, the renowned Academy of the Kamenava managed to open. The commonwealth also struggled with increasing external threats from surrounding countries. Up to the 18th century, it lost some of its most important territories and succumbed to economic sluggishness.

The splitting and governmental confusion

With the failing and declining kingdoms all around, the commonwealth was split in 1911 leaving the Republic of Audrinea and the Kingdom of Luthenia. Many people wanted change and for Luthenia to be a republic, but the government at that time was anti-change and wanted for the times to get better so that issues would not be guaranteed.

In 1926, a law was passed for the monarchy to be weakened and a prime minister be elected, but the monarch be mostly mainly ceremonial from now on. It was decided that a constitution would need to be written with that. It was completed a year later, in 1927, with the state type change along with it.

During the Great War, Luthenia decided to not directly take part in it, being neutral. Instead, it helped Audrinea by supplying ammunition and weapons.

Modern day

There were many communist and socialist uprisings during the 50's and 60's, but none of them managed to make it far enough to actually change something.
