After recently renaming some of my "Dollar" stores, I was thinking it would be nice if the FSA had an official name for its currency. The name can show up on the map in business names. It seems dollar is unoffically accepted by some and others unofficially use scrip. Is this something where we need some names and could vote on in August? Glauber (talk) 17:12, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

Not a mapper of the Federal States, but I quite think if there's an official FS currency it would probably be directly pegged to the Unified Standard Dollar. I hope the FS could have like a different currency name like pound or something, but I guess many would prefer using dollar. Like Federal Dollar, maybe.--Zhenkang (talk) 09:20, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

I do prefer using the "Dollar" name, mostly for simplicity, but I can understand some people preferring a different name. I think there was a discussion somewhere on Discord about it, but I don't recall where, or when. I like Zhenkang's suggestion of the "Federal Dollar", I propose the acronym FSD. ~ Canada LaVearn (talk) 22:48, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

I too prefer the "dollar" as the currency. I think we should see if there is any motivation amongst the community for an official vote on this. Are there any other suggestions? — Alessa (talk) 02:22, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
Since we have sat on this for a while, I am going to start a vote in conjunction with the omnibus to approve or reject "dollar" as the currency name.

There should be a strong etymology created for dollar, because obviously there are issues with "In the 16th century, Count Hieronymus Schlick of Bohemia began minting coins known as joachimstalers, named for Joachimstal, the valley in which the silver was mined. In turn, the valley's name is titled after Saint Joachim, whereby thal or tal, a cognate of the English word dale, is German for 'valley.'[24] The joachimstaler was later shortened to the German taler, a word that eventually found its way into many languages". It could be an FSA placed named Dollar, named after an old world Dollar, based around the etymology of Dollar in Scotland: "Possible interpretations are that Dollar is derived from Doilleir, an Irish and Scots Gaelic word meaning dark and gloomy, or from various words in Pictish: 'Dol' (field) + 'Ar' (arable) or Dol (valley) + Ar (high).[2] Another derivation is from Dolar, 'haugh place' (cf Welsh dôl 'meadow'. This word was borrowed from British or Pictish into Scottish Gaelic as dail 'water-meadow, haugh').[3] John Everett-Heath derives it as 'Place of the Water Meadow' from the Celtic dôl 'water meadow' and ar 'place'.". /wangi (talk) 10:27, 13 September 2025 (UTC)

In the absence of any better suggestions I think dollar is fine, plus you're fighting an up-hill battle coining a name for something as ingrained as dollar. The etymology could be connected to Irish 'díol' to sell and there are various forms of the dal sound that seem to be traceable back to Proto-Indo-European and Proto-Germanic, in both signifying a share/portion/part. More straightforwardly the English word deal isn't far off. As for the nickname, in the least serious way possible, I 'hate' all the suggestions. If buck wasn't a word currently in use in rl I'd say it was bad too. I'm voting 'Pop' to keep Alormen aligned with Mennowa as a fellow big river state. Ruadh (talk) 10:53, 13 September 2025 (UTC)

Initiative 2: Unofficial Names

Please list your state and sign it with your signature (using the four tildes) where you would use certain unofficial names as regional slang in your state. Use of these names are unofficial or as vernacular uses (like "buck" or "greenback"). Your selection(s) can be changed in the future, and nothing official or project-wide is decided here.
