Hi all, this isn't nearly as consequential as the other initiatives, but I think we should finalize the location of our nation's mints and assays, both active and historical. A quick query reveals there to be 4 mints in the FS: Huntington, the only functional mint, and 1 historical mint in Silverdale, Plainsburgh, and Madawan, each. I really think that this should be a national discussion, rather than something for stateowners to figure out independently because of the logistics behind every mint's locations (precious metal output, accessibility, politicking, etc). Just as a baseline, I made a quick diagram here to show what it looks like for the US:

I'm willing to work on this sort of thing. I put a historic mint in Madawan due to the close proximity to the Asphales (which may have historically had a precious metals craze like the Carolina Gold Rush but petered out soon after due to the annexation of the Cordilleras) and a navigable river. I think something like Swansonville, Dennison, or BarNen might be a good place for a modern-day mint and/or assay? PoisonDog522 (talk) 21:05, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
I agree that we're at the point of maturity in the project to discuss this more robustly, and I also agree that this is a national issue instead of just by claimants. I think two modern active mints is reasonable, although I'd be open to hearing a case for a third. A handful of historical ones are definitely on the table. As for assays, I see no reason that there cannot be even four or five of these still active if strategically placed (or two or three in addition to the two mints).
For disclosure, I had been reticent of Silverdale having an active mint before mostly on the grounds of the lore (recency of statehood, largely native-controlled lands, etc.), but with the change in location, size, and state lore, I would be willing to support it fully. Madawan also makes sense as a historic mint site. I would like to offer Minneuka or Fort Graham, WM as a site for an assay, given the mining output that is present in spots in the heartland akin to the mining belts in western and southern Illinois, Missouri, northern Arkansas, and northeastern Oklahoma. Its location along the rivers and rail would be central to much of the heartland. I don't want a mint or a historic mint site, but an assay has long been on my radar for one of these two cities. — Alessa (talk) 21:52, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
I want to explain my intent of the historic assay in Minneuka. My preferred history would be for it to be added somewhere in the 1850s or 1860s given its connections via rail to the "new west" and ability to get the materials eastward to a mint in the east. The mineral belts in the heartlands would also be a driving factor. Then, in the 1910s or early 1920s, as industrialization shifted the need for other precious metals to be checked for purity, it would be retired from the treasury and transferred to an equivalent of the 'Interior Department,' where it would become the "Central Metallurgical Facility." The purpose would change, moving away from historic checks on gold, silver, and copper and move to other metals like tungsten, palladium, lead, tin, etc., like the assay in St. Louis was already doing in growing amounts but was never transferred out of the treasury and closed. The lore here would be that Minneuka's assay did transfer out of the treasury department purview and remained active. If necessary, I'd be open to the non-treasury assay closing in the early 2000s, but I could argue it should be kept open. If this disqualifies the nomination in peoples eyes, and it should be pursued in a different format, then I am willing to withdraw the nomination. — Alessa (talk) 19:46, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

Yes, it is effectively a testing facility. It does quality inspection and verification of purity levels. Basically, if someone says that a metal is 99% silver, someone in or contracted by the government would need to prove that it is 99% silver. Yeah, i think if we go with the 2 mint option, an easat coast for sure, and i think with the growth/more importance and interest from iiearth, i think silverdale can be a good choice for the western mint. Brunanter (talk) 18:50, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
Plainsburgh currently has a Mint Museum, which I mapped early in my tenure. I would be happy for the Plainsburgh facility to be active, dormant, or abandoned, though I currently am not open to deletion of the building. Because Plainsburgh is a less obvious location for a mint, I suppose that there may need to be a creative backstory. ItsTybear (talk) 16:41, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
If the majority of state-owners decide that the Plainsburgh mint (currently a museum) never should've existed; then I will comply by removing it and the neighborhood around it (since there is a neighborhood named after it). This community decision could be made through a direct question on the ballot or indirectly by the consensus omission of the Plainsburgh location from the mint-assay map. I think you should mull over the existence of the mint yourself before bringing it to the community as it might be unnecessary. Plainsburgh lacks proximity to silver or gold deposits, which would be the number one factor when considering where mints should be placed. Let's take a look at the 4 mints west of the Mississippi:
  • Denver: Pike's Peak gold rush
  • Carson City: Comstock Lode
  • The Dalles: Eastern Oregon Gold Rush
  • San Francisco: California Gold Rush
Zakahigan lacks any such history, meaning that the federal government would have to facilitate secure transport from gold/silver-producing regions to Plainsburgh. As that would be very costly, they would almost certainly prefer creating a facility at or near the rushes, rather than move it across several states.
