The Territory ID (from OpenGeofiction:Territories, e.g. AR123a) and proposed name of the country |
AN136e - New Westland
![]() | Physical geography |
---|---|
An overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country. It is advised to also create a sketch, you can add a link to this (hosted on imgur or similar) |
Climate
New Westland is intended to reflect the general climate of the central and eastern United States. The region experiences a temperate, humid continental climate, with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm to hot with temperatures ranging from 25–35°C, while winters can be cold with temperatures dipping to -10°C in northern inland areas. Coastal areas of the territory are more moderated, with milder winters and slightly cooler summers. Precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year, though occasional storms and snowfall are common in winter.
Topography
The territory’s topography consists of gently rolling hills, fertile plains, and low mountain ranges toward the north. Coastal zones are flat and better suited for urban and agricultural development. Rivers and lakes are common and would form a central part of both rural and urban planning. Mountainous areas are mostly forested and sparsely populated, while central and southern regions allow for denser settlement and infrastructure expansion.

A brief description of the territory demographics, economic development, land occupation, infrastructure and mapping style |
Demographics
The country would be designed to reflect a modern, diverse society with roots in both indigenous and settler cultures. Urban areas would host a more mixed population, while rural regions would maintain local traditions and family-run farms. Immigration, internal migration, and historical events would have shaped a cultural blend similar to the U.S. Midwest or parts of southern Canada.
Economic Development
New Westland would be considered a developed, upper-middle-income country. The rural economy is rooted in agriculture, including corn, soy, and cattle farming. Forestry and mining are present in the north, while the coast supports a small but steady fishing industry. Urban areas would house the service sector, universities, and administrative centers. The economy is largely self-sufficient but globally connected through trade, especially via port cities.
Land Use and Infrastructure
The majority of the land would be used for agriculture, nature reserves, and suburban development, with a few medium-to-large cities forming the economic and administrative backbone. There would be 2–3 major highway corridors (modeled after interstate systems), secondary trunk roads, and rail lines connecting cities. The country would also have one or two regional airports and a major seaport along the coast to support trade.
Mapping Style
The mapping style would blend American suburban sprawl with compact downtown cores and structured farmland grids, similar to Midwest and Northeastern U.S. states. Towns and cities will be detailed with zoning, street networks, public transport, and parks. Mapping will aim for realism, using OpenStreetMap principles while following OGF's stylistic consistency.

A brief description of the intended culture and language |
History & Culture
Culture
New Westland would be shaped by an English-speaking settler history mixed with preserved indigenous roots, similar to how modern Canada or the U.S. Midwest developed. The majority language would be Ingerish, with minority languages and dialects present in specific regions. Regional pride, community festivals, and a strong work ethic would be part of the cultural identity, and different parts of the country would show variation in architecture and local customs.
History
Historically, New Westland was formed from the unification of various regional republics and colonial territories in the late 19th century. Originally fragmented, the regions came together following infrastructure agreements and shared trade interests. Since the early 1900s, the country has focused on internal development, eventually emerging as a stable and prosperous federation with a democratic government. The country is currently undergoing modernization efforts in its infrastructure and sustainability.

To support your request provide links to areas of OGF mapping which showcase your mapping skill. Mapping relevant to the requested theme & geography is especially useful. | |
The {{coord}}, {{node}}, {{relation}} or {{scalehelper}} templates can optionally be used to link to the OGF map - they result in nicely formatted links. Or you can paste in a URL. |
Oakridge Estates I have created a dense, gated residential community located just outside the city of Cazoon. This development includes several cul-de-sacs and a centrally placed community park, reflecting typical American suburban planning with an emphasis on security and neighborhood cohesion. The layout balances high residential density with small shared green spaces to create a realistic, livable environment. Streets are arranged to limit through traffic, enhancing the secluded feel of the area. The community's structure is inspired by modern suburban neighborhoods in the United States, where gated designs are used to provide both exclusivity and safety. This mapping showcases my understanding of urban form, road hierarchy, and neighborhood-scale design.

Hello, I have noticed the territory you are requesting is really similar to an American themed state, which could be simply requested as a territory inside the Federal States (AR120-XX). The climate, culture, geography and infrastructure would be a lot more reasonable and you might even find it more interesting to join a community with other mappers collaborating to build a coherent country themed on the United States. Keep in mind this is only a suggestion and I am not an admin, so please take it lightly.

- Thank you for the suggestion regarding the Federal States — I really appreciate the thought. However, I would prefer to create my own independent country and develop a unique region from the ground up. While my concept shares similarities with American themes, I have a specific vision and direction that I’d like to pursue independently, rather than working within the established structure of the Federal States I’m looking forward to building something original that reflects my own ideas, while still aligning with the overall OGF standards.
- Thanks again for the input!

Hello. Thank you for the application. Unfortunately, there really isn't enough mapping that demonstrates a wide-range of environments and the styles proposed. A single neighborhood is unfortunately not sufficient. Please consider what other applications have required in the past. Furthermore, the Antarephia admin have let me know that the proposed theme does not fit the area; this means it is would have been unlikely to be approved even with sufficient mapping.
That said, however, there are two potential opportunities we do have for you. First, we are happy to offer you a BG territory to build up your mapping portfolio, practice various themes, and have a space to yourself that you can control instead of the open-edit "blue" territories. All you have to do is respond below that you would like one, and I'll get it to you immediately (no need to make a new application). BG31, 32, 34, and 35 are all available if there is one you would prefer. Additionally, we do allow users to move quality mapping from the BG territories to a canon territory elsewhere once a future application is approved. The second opportunity I can offer is a chance to map a bit in West Massodeya. If you are interested in this, send me a note about it and what you would like to do. I will arrange an area for you. West Massodeya is not free-to-edit, so you cannot just jump right in without discussing it first. But, that process is quick.
Let me know if you would like a BG territory and which one. We can start that easily and promptly. If you are interested in West Massodeya, send me a direct message. Happy mapping! — Alessa (talk) 12:50, 9 June 2025 (UTC)

In the future, please note the comments made about demonstration of a variety of mapping styles (urban, suburban, rural, industrial, natural, etc.) and the appropriate fit for the territory. That part of Antarephia is not really conducive to the theme requested. |
