UL25b - Republiken Lingne

Noun Project Map icon 1463108.svgPhysical geography
An overview of climate, topography and landscape of the country. It is advised to also create a sketch, you can add a link to this (hosted on imgur or similar)

The Republic of Lingne, Republiken Lingne, is taking its inspiration from the geography of the northern Norwegian coast, like the areas of Lofoten and the general Nordland area. The nation, due to its slim and coastal presence, would most likely be more hill-based than mountainous. It will also feature a lot of coastal lowlands with fertile farmlands and intricate, lingering waterways. The climate would be very alike the nordics, with winters that last quite long, and cool, perhaps rainy summers. The upper parts of Lingne, towards the country of Ostau, would be at an higher altitude, but not with the same fell feel, more a wuthering taiga that is very sparsely populated. Lingne features boreal (dedicious and conferious) trees, with a common northern european flora.

Invest - The Noun Project.svgHuman geography
A brief description of the territory demographics, economic development, land occupation, infrastructure and mapping style

Lingne is a quite sparsely populated country with approximately 2 million residents, mostly concentrated in coastal towns and valleys. The population is ethnically homogeneous, with little emigration and immigration. Lingne's economy would be driven by fishing, aquaculture, farming, and mining. The country exports cod, salmon, and minerals, while sustainable forestry would support more local industries. Lingne is quite technologically advanced, with being an innovative centre in the IT-sector. Lingne would have a strong welfare state and a high HDI, combining free market principles with social safety, an economy built on social liberalism. There would be quite few highways in the country, perhaps just one or two running along the coast, and connecting up with Ostau. There would be smaller local highways without grade-separated junctions running all through the countryside and upper Lingne. In my mapping, I will be taking a lot of inspiration from Ostermark, close in the region. Coastal cities with archipelago-like city centres are common.

A brief description of the intended culture and language

The culture and history of Lingne is shaped by farming and fishing traditions, with native traditions often following the agricultural cycle. The culture is drawing inspiration from the scandinavian cultures, but also finno-baltic ones. Lingnian is a language based on the Scandinavian, mostly Swedish, languages, but with some spelling variations to add uniqueness to it. For example:

Harbor = Hamn in Swedish = Haun in Lingnish

Forest = Skog in Swedish = Skauv in Lingnish

Lake = Innvatn in Norwegian dialects = Invaun in Lingnish

To support your request provide links to areas of OGF mapping which showcase your mapping skill. Mapping relevant to the requested theme & geography is especially useful
The {{coord}} template can optionally be used to link to the OGF map - it results in a nice formatted link. Or you can paste in a URL.

A lot of my mapping in the blue zones have been deleted, it seems. I have some rural communities built in Deodeca, here is one. I have no previous experience of building Nordic cities in OGF, but due to my nativity to the region, and my experience from doing Swedish cities in other programs and games, I believe that I can be up to the task.

I will be doing mapping in blue territories/free zone to show my ambitions, I'll send the ID link here.

Hello Souzzzzie, welcome back. Your territory application is very detailed and well thought through. It relates very well to the East Uletha Concept and fits into the region. The quality of the mapping that did survive is high and qualifies you for your own territory. Just a few little points to address before I will approve the application:

  • Please provide a sketch of your territory. See Help:Making realistic countries for a step-by-step guide. This initial planning stage is very helpful in preventing early frustration and really elevates mapping quality later in my experience.
  • You say the coast would be mostly flat or hilly, but in the same time that it would be inspired by the Nordland area, which to me seems very mountainous and glacially-formed. Would you mind explaining in a little more detail what you mean here?
  • Please sign every post on the forum by typing 4x "~", without the "nowiki" syntax. THe four tildes will then get transformed into a dated signature. Looking forward to your reply, best, Leowezy (talk) 11:01, 14 March 2025 (UTC)

Hey Leowezy, thank you for your very quick reply. I was perhaps a little haste in my explanation of the topography. I was imagining a quite topographically diverse nation, with a lot of inspiration from Nordland in the flora and fauna, and in large parts of the fishing culture. Lingne would although have more coastal plains, and an earlier deelevation. Perhaps not as peaky mountains aswell, more a high elevation with hilly, unfertile, landscape. I have also decided that the population will be a little larger, perhaps 3.5 million instead of 2. It will be quite densely populated then. I will also link to a sketch and a flag here:

(sorry, I don't understand the ~ thing, is there anything more I need to do than writing the ~:s?)

The ~ thing is very simple, if you are in "Edit Source" mode just do ~~~~ then when you upload it will do everything. If you are just in "Edit" mode go to "Insert > More > Your Signature" and it will do it for you. Or just do ~~~~ in that mode also. It will properly time everything (as your manual signature is 20 mins off) and it formats everything how it should be. MiniMapper (talk) 18:21, 17 March 2025 (UTC)

Thank you everyone! Souzzzzie (talk) 06:54, 18 March 2025 (UTC)

As you develop your territory, be sure to keep it realistic. Here are some resources you may find useful for starting out: Help:Portal, Help:Making realistic countries, Help:Making realistic cities and OpenGeofiction:Site policies
