UL07d - נפון (Naphon)

The purpose of this request is to relaunch the previous Naphon Project. נָפוֹן or Naphon in English (/nə’fɔn/ or /nə’fɒn/ nuh-FON) is a collaborative territory located in southeastern West Uletha. It serves as the homeland for OGF equivalents of Hebrew language and Jewish people.

Current UL07d would be be split in three:

  • Naphon: Tribes’ territories 1, 2 & 3 augmented with the two southernmost valleys of Tribe 4’s territory (~35,801 km2 or 13,823 sq.mi.)
  • A new bay in place of Tribe 6’s territory, Lake UL07d/g and Tribe 7’s territory west of River E.
    • On the draft, the coast of the new-born UL07a's peninsula is redrawn to make the bay less enclosed. This is a topic secondary to the request and would need to be discussed with West-Uletha regional administrator and the territory’s owner. Otherwise the current border river will serve as new coast.
  • Remainder of UL07d

The project will be largely based on existing mapping elements. Naphon physical structure is, generally speaking, formed of strips parallel to the coast:

  • Existing islands, peninsulas and bays
  • A coastal plain where most of the population lives:
    • ~20 km wide in its NW section
    • ~60 km wide in its SE section as River A plain/valley extends inland.
  • High wooden hills (~500-800m) followed by the Mardouan Catens mountain range with highest peaks reaching about ~2500-3000m.
  • Inland plain reaching the new bay
  • The 2 Tribe 4’s southernmost valleys.

Due to its location (latitude and orientation), Naphon’s climate and landcover will be based on those of Albania:

  • Hot Mediterranean climate and vegetation on the islands and along the coast and the bay.
  • Subtropical climate in the low inland valleys, somehow sheltered from the Mesembric Sea influence.
    • Potential additional influence: Po River plain, southeastern Bulgaria
  • Warm Mediterranean to oceanic climate on the hills, depending on the height.
  • Cold (~continental variations) higher on the mountains
  • Steppe climate in the Tribe 4’s valleys
    • Potential additional influence: Inland Spain or Anatolia

A brief description of the territory demographics, economic development, land occupation, infrastructure and mapping style

Draft map
Naphon population will be around 7-10 million inhabitants, with one major city along the coast (~2-3 million inhabitants with the urban area), multiple secondary cities and towns and medium-sized capital city in the central highlands, currently bisected by the administrative border between Tribe 1 & Tribe 2 territories. The capital city, or a town nearby, will serve as religious centre. Though little is expected to be written on religion matter, this will translate on the map by an abundance of religious buildings in that specific area.
In terms of economic developments and infrastructure, Naphon will be aligned on its neighbours: Mardoumakhstan or further away: Navenna. Due to the population distribution, infrastructure (e.g. motorways, railway network) will be centred on coastal plain, radiating from the country main city.
In terms of mapping style, older urban centres will be based on ancient Israelite city mapping, highland settlements, Second Temple Jerusalem and, to a larger extent, on ancient cities in the Levant. Those tend to favour an overall grid-like plan with some variations, such as streets fanning from the main city gates or adaptations to local topographic features. Having been part, at some point, of OGF “Roman” Empire, Naphon older cities may have been influenced by “Roman” urban planning as well. For more modern developments, it is likely that Naphon cities have retained this features. Inspiration may come from Greek cities such as Piraeus, Patras or Thessaloniki that have retained grid-based plan. Using other Mediterranean cities as source of secondary inspiration may not be excluded.

A brief description of the intended culture and language

One of Naphon project purposes/guidelines is to avoid/refrain from bringing real-world current of past issues into the OGF community.
As a base for the OGF world version, Naphon serves as homeland for the Hebrew language and Jewish people (or even the larger Israelite group, including Samaritans and Karaites), the latter having not undergone post-Bar Kokhba revolt expulsions and Diaspora. This will translate by a higher concentration of building=synagogue artefacts. In addition, Naphon territory is to be considered as pretty much the same throughout history, with low-occurrence of regional conflicts – hardly any would have left any clue on the map.
The aforementioned religious capital may have a more prominent building loosely based on the Second Temple but will be still marked building=synagogue. If it is indeed mapped, it does not presume that its use would have been similar as religious topics are likely to remain vague any further than building=synagogue and religion=jewish (likely without tag denomination:) for other religion-related buildings or cemeteries, etc…
Naphon developed from a confederation of tribes, of which the names have been retained for administrative subdivisions (sing. שֵׁבֶט/šévet, plural. שְׁבָטִים/ š(ə)vatím). To keep some symbolism, these original tribes number twelve. Over time, the confederation morphed into a modern state with a central government and administrative, a national belonging while the notion of tribe has kept some meaning of affiliation, not unlike Korean clans. Those tribes’ name will not reuse historical ones’ and may include female names as way to depart from History (e.g. שֵׁבֶט־דִּינָה/šévet-dinah or Tribe of Dinah).

Given the size of the territory, it is likely to form one single collaboration, with optionally, the administrative subdivisions corresponding to Naphon’s main city, capital city and religious centre open more widely to collaborators.

To support your request provide links to areas of OGF mapping which showcase your mapping skill. Mapping relevant to the requested theme & geography is especially useful
The {{coord}} template can optionally be used to link to the OGF map - it results in a nice formatted link. Or you can paste in a URL.

This looks good, and there are no objections from the community. It's nice to see this up and running again. Have fun! — Alessa (talk) 18:37, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
A few points just to make sure all goes smoothly: (1) Please work with Rustem to craft the bay, since it slightly impacts a strip of his territory; (2) please give the remaining rump territory the OGF:ID of UL07i; (3) please be sure to keep relations as simple as possible in the region, so that users jumping into the territory can find it easy to work with (no overlapping lines or too numerous of segments, etc.); (4) Craft up a collaborative coordination page when the project is officially ready to launch at [[Collab:Naphon]]. — Alessa (talk) 19:02, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
