Uppingham is a small city on the banks of the River Morningstar, upriver of the Brigstowe Gorge, within the Morningstar region in the New User Practice and Demo Zone. To the south, it is bordered by the Mayfell upland area, with mountains such as Brigstowe Fell and Great May Fell rising sharply and suddenly upwards from the southern suburbs around Presteigne and Buildwas. It has a dense historic core, with narrow, pedestrianised streets and densely-packed buildings. The University of Uppingham, and its colleges and departments, are situated to the northwest of the old city.
