The city has 1 322 324 inhabitants (zensus 2011). The flag is similiar to the flag of the province, but in other colours.

History

Saguset was founded 1501 in the early period of the colonisation of Latina. Here was build an harbour to get with ships in the hinterland, following the Saguset-river (Rio Saguset). This first settlement now is the southern part of the barrio # 1 (Cidudad Central). 1690 the northern part of this area was urbanisized.

1750 the trade with wine from Redondo came in use. With ships the wine came down the Rio Saguset. Therefore at the other side of the river was build a little harbour and a small village (now part of barrio # 4). Since this time in Hegolez (now in southwest of Saguset) started a rich pottery industry for the near market of the capital Latina (Ciducad).

1818 near Saguset the troops of the Republic won one of the battles against the old colonial troops of Castellán.

The modern time reach Saguset 1844, as the first railway in Latina from Latina-Sur reached the town. So in the 1840ies and 1850ies are urbanisized the barrios ## 2 (Avenide Nuova) and 3 (Opera). 1849 this railway was prolonged along the coast to Mar y Flora.

Saguset was the first town in Latina with electrical light and power. So the Poder Latina has the main-office in Saguset. 1892 the streetcars of Saguset are the first, which run with electricity and not more with horsepower. 1881 Calos Tosselli opened his first departenemt-store here in Saguset ar the Avenida Gentofte (Barrio # 4). This house now is the flagship of the Tosselli-"imperium" of departement stores.

Around 1880 to 1910 the port of Saguset was made greater, because the then bigger ships had problems, to reach the port of Latina (Cidudad) in the flat lagoon. In this time the town grow enormus and reached 1923 1 000 000 inhabitants. 1912 the first subway-line was opened, most as elevated line.

Metro Saguset

Metro and Streetcar

The traffic in the town is mainly organisized with five metro-lines. First line was opened 1912 from Buena Vista (now southern part of line # 2) to the Estacion Central. Next line 1914 was from Estacion Central via Corso along the Avenida Hermanos Bergez (now part of line # 1). First lines are build at the surface with iron viaducts in broad streets and only with few tunnels, because this was cheaper and was simplier in the swampy underground of the valley of the Rio Saguset. In the 1920ies and 1930ies in the outer suvurbs this metro-viaduct in the middle of a broad avenue often was the first sight of the urbanisation. Today this are mainly the lines ## 1, 2 and 3 of the net.

In the 1950ies line # 4 was build, this line in the inner city lays in a tunnel. 1998 was opened the prolongation of the southern branch of line # 2 to Buenea Vista as "price", that this village then belongs to the town of Saguset.

Newest line is line # 5, which too run in the inner city in a tunnel. This line was build to take traffic from line # 3, the most busiest in Saguset. Line # 5 is more straight and has only 9 stations between the Central-Station and University instead of 12 as on line # 3. Between Arcadia and Universidad both lines run parallel. Here the line # 3 goes a short piece in the underground, to make possible the interchange to line # 5 at the same platform at station "Arcadia".

In Saguset run the same trains as in Latina (Cidudad), but both nets have no physical connection - there is a gap of nearly 60 km. For the paek-hour traffic in Saguset are needed roundabout 200 trains. The system had 216 trains in use, stored in 4 depots. For lines ## 1 to 3 the Depot A (with main-service) with xx trains and depot B with 40 trains and for lines ## 4 and 5 the Depot C with 50 trains and for lines ## 3, 4 and 5 Depot D also for 50 trains. Lines 1 to 3 on the one side and lines 4 and 5 on the other side have only at the station "Arcadia" a physical track-connection.

There too are 9 streetcar-lines, who have survived the cannabilisation of the streetcar-net from the metro net - today the lines ## 9,10,11,14,16,19,21,26 and 32. Most tracks lay on own right of way, but in the inner town in the street - often there in oneway-streets. A line # 29 runs only at the peak-hours to the harbour-ferries and then with line # 9 to the barrio "Heno".

There are new "short" cars of 48 m and "long" cars of 72 m for lines with denser traffic. Therefore most streetcar-depots now are 150 m long. Formerly in Saguset (as in other towns) are shorter cars in use.
